Diabetics & Pre-op Diet low blood sugars

Recommended Posts

I'm an insulin dependent diabetic. On Day 2 of my pre-op diet I had 2 episodes of low blood sugar (74 & 61). I was wondering what people did on their pre-op diet to raise their sugar w/o compromising their pre-op diet instructions?

Hi there,

I'm Diabetic as well. Are you currently taking your insulin or have you been instructed to stop taking it? My doctors made me get off of the metformin and actos that I was taking and it's been much better. I would ask your doctor is you can take those glucose tabs that come in a roll. My blood sugar went low and I was getting the worst headaches and was FREEZING! Can you add a Protein bar to your diet? What type of diet are you on? I am doing Optifast and get 6 shakes a day and 2 bars. I have a shake/bar ever 2.5 hours and it's help my blood sugar stay pretty normal.

Pam

Are you Type I or Type 2? In either case, they should be working closely with you to make sure their preop diet (which is not required by all doctors) coexists with your insulin needs.

If Type 2, it seems as if it might be as simple as reducing your meds, though.

I to am insulin dependent on an insulin pump. You need to monitor your glucose level closely. Be sure to follow doctors orders, but most likely you will need to decrease your insulin intake because you are not getting the same amount of carbs as you would regularly. Best of luck as I am happy to report 16 days post, my insulin intake is about half of what it was.... hoping to get off real soon.

I am a Type 1 diabetic and wear a pump. I did go out and buy some glucose tablets. My dietician advised that I drink milk to raise my lows. I have adjusted my basal rate and my bolus amounts per meal. My diet is pretty strict, but thankfully not all liquids.

I have to have 3 Protein shakes a day. Breakfast, mid-afternoon, bedtime.

lunch and dinner can either be salad greens, 1/2 cup veggies, + 3 oz Protein or I can have 1 frozen meal like lean cuisine, just less than 300 cals and 14 g protein or more.

Freebie Snacks include celery, radishes, SF Jello, SF popsicle.

After those first 2 lows, I haven't had any since. It is just going to be a trial and error as to what the magic level will be. I'm sure I'll have to adjust even more after the surgery on April 5th, since I'll just be on liquids for 2 weeks.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
