I liked it. I felt a little guilty that they were doing it without surgery, but...I got over it. Everyone has to make their own path.

Its on mondays @10. Keia I did too for a brief moment. But then I temembered all the times I tried and failed to lose my 100+ lbs on my own.

But it didn't stop me from rejoicing as crying with them while watching.

For some reason I can no longer watch these weight loss shows. I used to watch the biggest loser religiously and I've tried to get into this show and the show I Used to Be Fat on mtv and I just can't watch them.

Same here; never really got into The Biggest Loser but I was watching I Used to be Fat. Now I feel hypersensitive to shows like that. Maybe some underlying guilt on my part for having surgery? I don't know; I kinda feel the same way about all these stupid WW commercials (lol). I know Heavy is supposed to be different, but the other shows I'm not keen on because they're all about losing as much weight as quickly as possible for ratings without dealing with the emotional side of things or even what happens once they're no longer in that environment.

Me too, I used to watch them before I had surgery but now I cannot..I feel uncomfortable watching them, it's weird. I don't feel like one of them anymore....even though I am still just beginning stages with the band.

Not to sound negative but from my own personal experience without help I feel that the people who lose tons of weight will eventually put it back on. and I don't feel the same way about food anymore, i don't fee like it's my enemy, I don't feel like I have to deprive myself of every good thing. Does anyone understand me? Am i crazy or does the band give you all the same hope?

I feel like these shows are made to exploit the people trying to lose weight. When the biggest loser first started, it was about the people losing weight. Now it's all about marketing dollars. Every scene has some type of product placement and it takes away from the purpose of the show.

I watched it but found it a bit boring.

My cousin will be on a show airing sometime this spring - "Extreme Makeover: Weight loss edition" . The show has been following her and others for a year. She started out at 445 and has lost quite a bit of weight and is looking great. Look it up on Facebook for more info. I am so curious how the final show will be after the editing.

Sometimes I feel a little guilty that I had to have surgery to help with my eating habits and all she did was work out like a mad women and eat right. I just hope and pray that she is able to keep the weight off.

I don't feel guilty because I've done those diets and exercise and lost weight. Three times in my life I lost over a hundred pounds and gained it back. This time I lost 50 pounds before surgery and felt enpowered because I was'nt going to gain it back. Personally I think someone who gained a lot of weight because of an illness or accident or emotional trauma has a greater chance to keep weight off after a major diet (basically they were a thin person who gained weight) There's a reason only 5% maintain a major loss. Where are these people going to be in 3 years? The band is a medical device. People who have pacemakers do we say they took the easy way out? No. I go to the gym 7 days a week. I choose healthy foods; and watch my portion size. It's not like I put an order in for a thin body and will be back in 6 months to pick it up.

honk: loved your post! hey -where can I put my order in for a new bod??

Seems like I'm just the opposite - I NEVER used to watch Biggest Loser, etc but now I'm banded I have to watch them ALL. how weird is that?

Honk,

I totally agree. I've been overweight for 25 of my 50 years, since I had kids. I lost 70 lbs twice.. gained it back plus more each time. After the second time I quit trying. I was afraid I would gain more again. So my weight has been stable for about 7 years. This is my chance to loose the weight FOREVER, and I don't feel guilty about it.

I'm like you, Choe ... I never used to watch the weight loss shows, now I do. I watched "Heavy" this weekend. I found it interesting.

Now, I do agree that TV shows tend to exploit these people, but, when you desperately want to lose the weight, sometimes that doesn't matter to you. I don't blame them. Just like I don't feel one iota of guilt for taking the surgical route. My weight loss post band has been the hardest I have ever worked to lose weight; and that's okay too.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
