pain in chest after eating

Recommended Posts

Had a fill again after two months and today was the first time I could eat regular snce then and within a few minutes after eating my first bite I had really bad chest pains. Or at least the pain was in my chest area. I stopped eating and it stopped after a bit. To me tho, after that I really paid attention, it seemed more like bad gas pains. Any suggestions what I might have done wrong? I chewed well, it was scrambled eggs, so I wouldn't think it was that, but.....don't know. I'm at 6cc in a 14cc band. Would overeating possibly cause it? Or maybe I ate too fast? My Dr. does more RNY's than bands so I don't feel real confident in asking him and I don't know very many of the people that have had the band as they don't come to the support group meetings. We kind of feel left out of it all as we're not sure how much of what we learn really pertains to us. Thanks for any input.

I have heard many people complain about not being able to eat eggs after getting a lap band. It doesn't seem to matter what form they are in. Scrambled, fried, poached or whatever. so maybe it was the eggs???

I had my first fill of 2.5cc in a 10c band on Jan 13. My instructions were to be on CLEAR liquid broth for 2 days and then on the evening of the second day go with a Protein Shake. I sipped my liquids slow so that I wouldn't have that pain. Had eggs the next morning and was fine. The thing is (at all times) we should eat slowly or that can happen. Overeating can definitely cause that pain as well because the food needs to go down slowly and it can't if it's being stuffed.

In answer to your question, there were no instructions prior to the fill. Since it was an early morning appt, I just took it upon myself to not eat until afterwards; not knowing what to expect. Than afterwards, just slowing sipped hot broth for 2 days. I'm still trying to determine if the fill made a difference, I think it may have, but not quite sure. I am trying to eat properly and allow the fill to work. Did you notice any difference after any of your fills? This was my first, and I understand that it may take a few fills before it get's "just right."

that happens to me sometimes. i cant find a pattern of food or anything. it might be over eating or gas. those are my 2 guesses. good luck!

Two days of liquids and two days of mushy stuff and I did that. But I could probably work on the eating slower suggestion. I chew well but have to admit I don't really eat slowly.

This was the first time I actually noticed a difference. I have had several fills and even one unintentional unfill but until this one I didn't notice a difference at all. So that may be why it happened. I was too use to being able to eat the way I do and this showed me to be more careful now and in the future. It was a lesson well learned.

I am 61 years old and 4 days post-op and am still on liquids. However, I cannot swallow even a sip of Water without severe spasms in my chest area. A lot of burping also occurs. It is very painful and because of it, I am not drinking anything nor am I able to take any of my medications. It doesn't matter if the liquid is warm, cold or room temperature. It still causes the same spasms. In the hospital the doctor told me it would get better but so far, that isn't happening and I'm worried about getting dehydrated. The doctor said I had a significant amount of fat around the upper portion of my stomach and they had to wrap the band around it. I'm beginning to wonder if that has anything to do with it. I have a follow-up appointment in 2 days but not sure I can continue to go without any fluids or nourishment that much longer. Any thoughts?

I had the same problem. I had surgery May 14th. As soon as i was back in my room and was able to drink a few sips of Water i could feel that it wasnt going down very well. They kept me an extra day at the hospital. My surgeon came in and took some Fluid out from the port site. That seemed to help for a day. I was released on that same day. When I came home the first night was terrible. I couldn't drink or eat anything. I was burping and vomiting everything back up. Especially when I laid down to sleep. It would come back up in my mouth. I went back to see him the next day and he tried to get more Fluid out but had no luck. He said that some people have more swelling than others and to give it more time to heal and for swelling to go down. I managed to put up with this over the weekend. I called first thing Monday morning and they decide to order me a barium swallow test. This showed that nothing was passing through the band but a small drip. I was then told by my surgeon that he needed to go back in and "unbuckle" the band. This was done on May 22. He went back through two existing cuts. It only took 6 minutes for him to do this. When I woke up and could have something to drink I had no problems! Unfortunately, I will have to have a third surgery in 6 weeks to have it "rebuckled". Now I'm having some gallbladder issues and it might need to be removed. I'm still trying to stay positive. My daughter had surgery with me on the same day and is doing great! I have lost 17lbs so far. I would definitely call your doctor ASAP. I know it was the worst week ever for me until he did the second surgery! Good luck! Hope you feel better soon!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
