Carbonated beverages

My doctor says soft drinks, beer and any other carbonated beverages will be a thing of the past for me after lap-band surgery. Anyone hear that from their doctor and do you know why that is?

I know that is a problem with bypass surgery, but i have been banded since Sept 20th and after i was back on regular foods, i have had no problem with either beer or soda, except fore the calories in beer.

It will stretch your pouch and very much so if you are drinking carbonated beverages and then start eating more then you know your pouch is stretched. I wouldnt reccommend it. Plus if you drink beer it makes you full very full

My doctor said no carbonation EVER. I took a drink of pop one day because I thought I missed the taste, but it hurt like hell going down and tasted like crap. So I will gladly follow my doctor orders. :)

I quit my Diet Coke habit one week before surgery.... I thought I'd miss it but haven't. Funny how your mind works :)

stretching of the pouch is the reason I got from my doc. I'm going with it because I loved Coke or Pepsi or whatever, and beer and champagne. Honestly, the hardest to stay away from is the special occassion champagne. My doc went so far as to tell me that when I'm craving carbonated stuff, take a sip, swish it around and spit it out. It hasn't been hard yet but I'm only two months post op.

Good luck!

My doctor told me the same thing and he said it is because the carbonated gases fill up your stomach and stretch it out. It really isn't that bad, i haven't had one in 4 years. Believe me they are nasty to drink now.

Of all of the things I've given up with the surgery... soda is what I miss the most. I've heard many different opinions on various message boards about carbonated beverages. But I've just decided that if there is any chance that it could stretch the pouch and have potentially long-term negative effects, it just isn't worth it. So I haven't touched a soda since my surgery in September.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
