Kim, walking helps dissipate the gas. Sipping Water helps calm your stomach, and it will take away some of the hunger pangs. You need to remember your band is stitched to your stomach. It needs time and opportunity to heal up so you can get on with things. Rushing your recovery is not what you want to do, regardless of how expensive the doctor was.

Find another type of shake you can tolerate, and get your nutrition in. If you don't, you run the risk of malnutrition, which has its own set of side effects. (like bone and muscle loss, and your hair falls out.) I had all sorts of issues with the shakes I thought I'd be drinking post-op, and I ended up using Musle Milk Light from costco. 150 cals, 20g Protein, 10g carbs in an 8.25 ounce ready-made shake. Very easy to drink. It was the only one I tried that I can drink.

Be smart, and don't take risks. You'll find you'll get better more quickly if you give your body something to work with. And drinking Protein Shakes will kill your appetite.

Good luck!

Dave

I was banded 12/15. For the first 3 days I "ate" Water, chicken broth and pain meds. I slept a lot, but not thru the night. Now, 10 days out, I'm practically back to normal. I'm eating mushy foods, but I'm full after eating 1/2 a cup or less. I feel really good now. Give yourself 4-5 days and you'll be fine. Good luck!

Hi

I remember those days, though I did not have dry heaving. My problem was being extremely hungry and having hunger pangs course through my whole body. I was on Clear Liquids for 2 weeks after surgery (which I hadnt expected). It DOES get better!! Hang in there and let your body heal. Let your body go through what it needs to go through as it heals. It is so important to lay the best foundation possible for the rest of the journey.

I would lay in bed and just let the hunger course on through...then get up again. I was not good about getting out and walking because I was scared Id pass out or something (really felt starved), plus I was beat, very tired and worn out.

I learned something very valuable for me about being hungry -- not sure how to put it into words, but I know I am no longer afraid to be hungry. And I hadn't realized that I had lived my life being afraid to be hungry --and thus kept myself full all the time.

This too shall pass! and try not to focus on the "when". Let it happen when it happens!!

Kim,

Post op was rough for me too. I stayed two days in the hospital because of the pain I was having and sooo many narcotics make me sick to my stomach, I almost insisted I stay for the IV pain medication. The following days weren't necessarily painful for me but I did have a great deal of discomfort. I am a stomach/side sleeper and thought I would never get a good night's rest. If I had to take a guess, I bet I could locate the size, diameter of my port because I am so aware of the discomfort. For me, days three and four were significantly better and things did make a turn for the better. Hang in there. As far as shakes, I think they are pretty horrible too but the ones I seem to tolerate best with a good amount of Protein in the Injury chocolate one and the Jay Robb chocolate whey Protein? I hope this helps. As far as the hunger, I tried to get out of the house more and that worked to some degree helping to keep me distracted. I bet this time next week, you'll be feeling much better!

Kim, how are you feeling? Yes the first few days are rough, but you will feel better! I did not sleep through the night until a week later. But before that I was hardly sleeping at all! The first 2 noghts I slept in a recliner and could not sleep. I could not take the pain meds because it make my mouth so dry and pasty. I had the gas pains and just felt miserable. It took about 4 days for me to start feeling better.

You will get there!! Just hang on!! I ate a lot of broth, along with the shakes. I use Muscle milk light and I like it a lot. It is the ready made ones, and they work for me.

Keep us posted on your progress!

I know how you feel. I am ten days out and found myself in the emergency on Christmas day. Christmas day! I was having tightness in my chest and hard time breathing, Scared me to death. Prayerfully everything was ok. I am saying this to say. It will get better. IT will pass. You just make sure you follow the doctors orders and when the pounds start falling off and your health improves, You will see! Hang in there!

The first few days are the worst. My biggest recommendation for gas pains would be to use a heating pad and walk around. Peppermint tea also seemed to help. The first 5 days after surgery I slept on my couch (I don't have a recliner), with a bunch of pillows behind me. The best Protein shakes I've found are the unjury shakes. I had surgery on October 15, and I still have 1 Protein shake a day just to make sure I'm getting enough Protein in. I also recently started adding PB2 to my Protein Shakes and it's delicious!

Don't be discouraged. The first few days are tough, but it'll all be worth it.

Muscle Milk light chocolate has been the best premade shake i have tried. cappellaflavors.com (google it spelling might be different) will change the taste of vanilla shakes tremendously its great stuff. all the crystal light and ocean spray drink packets are great too 5 calories and no sugar.

I was banded on 12/21/10. I feel horrible, tired, achy, gasey, moodey. Though each day does get slightly better I still have my down moments. Glad to hear I am not alone. Hang in there " This To Shall Pass"

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
