We should call our November group 'November to Remember' :smile2:

Think it's fitting?

YAY! Thats my surgery date too! I tried getting a thread going a week or so ago and no one responded. I was thinking it was maybe just a little to early. I'm glad we can go through it together! Where do you live? I'm in MN. I have almost everything done, just need to lose 15 pounds, which I am sort of struggling with. I have BCBS and have to get the 6 months of dietican visits in.

I live in MN too! I go through St. Paul Surgeons, they are awesome!

Three weeks of liquid diet? Ugh! I don't know if I could do that. Mine's one week before. That much, I can probably handle. Maybe. I keep thinking back to those Slim Fast days in the late 80s where I think I got hungrier than ever. Oh well, it's only a week, it can't kill me. I hope.

My doctor never mentioned doing a liquid diet before, is that the norm?

Hi Corkee,

I belive it is the norm, and the length of the liquid diet probably depends both on your physician and your weight or other medical conditions. It was explained to me as a way to shrink your liver and abdominal fat--allowing the surgeon to work easier around while operating.

For me, I am dreading it a bit because next Wednesday I have to start a 3 week liquid diet before surgery on the 10th of November. Yikes!!

lol Im with you every step of the way. Im banded on the 10th of November AND I have to do the 3 week liquid diet. Luckily I have a very involved nutritionalist who has helped me do a great diet plan. I do get to have some cottage cheese and such, but for the most part its 2 Protein shakes a day, some pudding and cottage cheese, and as much sugar free Jello and low sodium broth that I can handle.

Has anyone else started the pre-op diet????? My surgery date is Nov. 3 and they told me to start the diet last Thursday after they gave me my date. I'm finding it a bit harder than I thought I would because I end up with a headache by the afternoon. But I will say that today was much, much better!! But I did have a string cheese in the morning! My diet is supposed to be two to three Protein Shakes a day and a meal of lean meat with a vegetable, these shakes are getting a bit boring but it's only a couple of weeks so I know I can get through it!!! By the way does anyone know where to get chewable Probiotics? ?? My nutritionist said I should get some to have everyday. I'm so excited for all of us to begin this journey together!!!!

I start my pre-op diet on Monday the 18th, surgery on 11-1-10, so it looks like I will be kicking November off banded. I have my pre-op surgeons appt today. The pre-op diet is weighing on my mind, neither is the 2 week clear liquid diet after surgery. It's weeks 3-4 on "mushies"... actually it's the thought of pureed chicken, turkey, or any meat for that matter. Good luck all!!!!!!!

My doctor doesn't do a pre-op liquid diet. I'm not sure what the benefit is.

Is anyone else concerned about swallowing pills after surgery?

Good deal John! I am getting mine Nov 10 and it's good to see another guy on here. I am starting out at 332 and hope to get under 200!

Peace

Sounds like you and I are on the same track, FS! I started at 338, and I'm shooting for that 200-ish mark as well! GOOD LUCK!

Whoo-hoo! I just got a call from my surgeon's office, letting me know that they received the approval from my insurance! My "tentative" November 1st surgery date is now my OFFICIAL November 1st date!

I don't have to do a pre op diet either. I'm going this weekend to get all the fancy pre op surgery stuff taken care of. Since I'm being banded november 3 hopefully by thanksgiving I can maybe eat some cranberry sauce.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
