can you use any protein drink?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon sells a bariatric Protein Drink that is disgusting, can I use another brand? What brands are "good"? I want to try to make this 15 day pre op diet less painful....

thanks in advance!

See if they will give you guidelines to stay within. Some Protein is higher in calories/fat/carbs than you will want. For post surgery my Nut recommended whey Isolate Protein powder; which you can find at many stores. For better quality protein you may need to check out places like Vitamin Shoppe and GNC. I find Vitamin Shoppe to be cheaper and the flavors better (also available online). On flavor I enjoy is Gold Standard Double chocolate.

Another thought is to use a blender. I have a personal Hamilton Beach blender (you drink directly out of the jar.

If you are allowed to make them with milk you can also try making "Milk Cubes" (instead of Ice Cubes) which will give you more of a Frappe texture (that's new england for thick milk shake).

Also I was able to add suger/fat free pudding mix (2 tablespoons).

Also try Isopure, it comes pre mixed with 42g of Protein, they come in all the fruity flavors if you like those better than a chaukly powder type. The GNC brand though is very good.

If you are low on Protein, I think the Isopure Fruit Drinks are the easiest to get down quickly..I don't like the taste of them (though many people do) but I found them easy to drink. My absolute favorite (and that I still drink 4 months later) are carnation instant Breakfast SUGAR FREE! they have some pre made or packets you mix with skim milk..they are not the highest in Protein but they are delish and get the job done. and they only have 150 cals. I think Ensure high protein are the best tasting but they are higher in cals..

best of luck!

I use the 100% whey Protein Powder from GNC. I mix the Cookies and cream with the chocolate, and it is really yummy. I mix it with skim milk.

I am also on the pre-op diet and it sucks! I am on day 8 now and finally I am doing better about being weak. I cheated the first few days, I couldn't help it. Just a bite or two of my hubbies dinner. I was craving salt so bad. Everything on this diet is sweet so it is hard to kick that need for savory items. But today I am much better and haven't had those urges. I have lost 8lbs so far and now that I am not cheating, I hope that it will be more for this next week.

Also, in regards to the drink mixes, I am afraid to buy anything I have not tried....I have tried the unjury chocolate and it is good, the strawberry one you mix with crystal light is EWWWW but they are very expensive so I stick with the GNC ones. If you find anything good let me know. Good luck on your surgery, soon we will both be thinner.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
