Ended up in Emergency Room. ByeBye Blood Pressure Meds

Recommended Posts

Hi

My blood pressure tanked this morning and i actually blacked out for a few seconds. My blood pressure wouldn't even register on my blood pressure cuff it was so low. Husband took me in and they got it stabilized but end result is no more blood pressure meds. I started this journey taking three different blood pressure medicines and the one the ER Dr stopped today was the last one. I have to see my regular Dr. this week for followup, but the ER Dr said with as much weight as I have lost he sees no need for me to be taking any blood pressure medication any longer.

I am not happy how it happened but I am thrilled to be off of the medications. Now all I have left is a very low dose of lipitor. Hopefully that will be gone when I see my Dr. for bloodwork in September.

The same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. I collapsed in a lift at the hotel we were staying at! Hotel called 000 and I got taken to hospital by ambulance and spent the night in emergency. They also couldn't measure my BP initially as it was so low. After doing lots of tests the only other thing they found was that I had low potassium so they made me drink an evil tasting supplement.

I am happy not to be on BP meds any more but it's not the best way to find out. I am also paranoid that it could go back up so I have a home monitor and measure it at home to check that it is still OK.

I will continue to monitor mine at home too. I would not want it to start creeping up again and not be aware of it.

Congrats for being off the meds but beware. I have been hospitalized twice since my banding in DEC 09 due to syncope and low pressure with low potassium and magnesium..I am a cardiac RN so i knew right away to go in. However, my pressure is labile so beware. That means it is fluctuating up and down...Keep monitoring your pressure because it will fluctuate and you certainly don't want rebounding.......onenuttynurse

That happened to me the last time I lost weight.

I was down 50lbs and I woke up 1 morning to use the bathroom and promptly fainted dead away at the foot of my bed.

Unfortunately, I broke my ankle in the fall so I had to go to the ER.

When I got there my pressure was so low it didn't even register on the cuff. So I was admitted for thorough testing and had to stay about 4 days.

Since that time I have gained back all the weight and it bought friends and my BP is up again.

I hope to get to the point where my BP is back under control again but we can all do w/o the fainting and passing out.

Now, u have me nervous....my insurance nurses called me the other day and told me since I've lost a good amount of weight, I need to monitor my pressure. Was on 2 meds (one is a Water pill I take when the other one doesn't work alone).

I've been monitoring it and it's seems low but it does register like 92/66, 112/70, 113/70. Is this too low (will have to google or webmd?? I know to stop the Water pill so now I'm down to one bp med.

That seems low but I don't know about too low.

You need to go to your Dr. ASAP

You may be able to stop the meds altogether. That's a good thing.

I can't wait to be off mine.

I would talk to your Dr.They are normally more concerned about high than low. As far as I know your readings are still OK.The table below gives a rough guide.

130 -85 = High Normal

120 -80 = Normal

110 - 75 = Low Normal

90 - 60 = Borderline Low

60 - 40 = too low

I asked my Dr at what level I should be concerned when it comes to high BP. It depends on the time of day as it is normal for BP to differ depending on time.

I was told in the morning it shouldn't be over 150/90-95

afternoon 160/90-95 and evening 160 - 170/100.

My doctor cut my BP meds back when I got to 110/60. It went back up to 124/82 by cutting my meds. I hope to cut it back more as I lose more weight!

This is the primary reason I got banded - to improve my health. So glad to see it is working!

Low normal is where you now want to be. Used to be that 120/80 was normal. That is not the case anymore in the medical field. Even though it is acceptable, a more acceptable range would be 110/70 or a little lower....They are coming out with new cardiac research that states to keep the pressure a little on the lower side of normal to reduce oxygen demand on the heart.....

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
