Is it what you eat or how much?

I follow the meaning of this post, but seem to be the exception so far. I eat 800-1000 cal/day, with 80-100 Protein. In the last month I have lost nothing. I walk on the treadmill 40min 4/week at a 2.5-3mile average. And yet I still an not losing weight.

I had the same problem in the past when I worked out in a personal training group. We rotated cardio and weight training and read our food every day so there was no room to cheat. I lost 35lbs at first and then it stopped. I continued with this plan for another 4 months and finally gave up.

I am beginning to fear the lap band hasnt done anything except give me a vacation from work. As you can see I am very frustrated.

You wouldn't lose any weight from your workout routine. I'm not sure why the media and doctors make people think that standard workouts a few days a week will amount to any weight loss. Workouts like you are doing would burn less than 2000 calories per week, which isn't even a lb. So, you might see 1/2 lbs a week from them, if you are lucky. One mistake I see people making is using standard charts to figure out calorie burn. You really need to use an age/weight/heart rate calculator. If I plug in my values with what I know my heart rate is walking at that speed, and your timing and frequency, I burn about 1300 calories per week with your workout. So, while it might contribute a small amount, you won't see perceptible losses with standard exercise. Now if you do very vigorous workouts 4 or more hours a day, then you may see big losses from exercise.

This thread has convinced me to make an extra effort to exercise every day. I want to be one of the successful bandsters who lose all of their excess weight. Because of my situation, I can only walk. But I can walk for an hour, even with intense pain in my legs. That's a good start, right?

That is a great start and will give you up to 1/2 lb. a week. The person who said to increase your intensity is correct. You will burn far more calories walking very fast for an hour than strolling for 1.5 hours. You need to monitor your heart rate so you can accurately figure how many calories you are burning. And, remember that the standard exercise we do isn't going to contribute significantly to weight loss. It's good for keeping the metabolism up and and making you feel good. I've been working out very vigorously for a year. i exercise frequently at a high intensity and have seen zero increase in WL from when I wasn't working out. My greatest benefits have been being more toned and feeling better. I'm not so flabby and weak.

One thing I keep thinking about with this "lifestyle change" I'm supposed to have is that if this was a change I was capable of making and sticking to..then I really wouldn't have needed the lap band. My doctor wants me on a diet very close to the Atkins low carb diet, and I know that works because I lost 50lbs on it once. However, if I had been able to stick to it as a lifestyle, I would have lost more and kept it all off.

They keep saying the lap band is a tool...but it's only a physical tool, not an emotional one. I guess I was thinking the emotional part would kick in at some point..I'm just wondering where that point is, and where it kicked in for those further down this road...

Oh how I understand you.... I am having a hard time with the mental part of it. I thought it would kick in too...but i just cant seem to change my habits...if you have found anything that works I am all ears.

..and im the same at this point. ive changed a bit but not enough with my mental approach to it all. I dont have a lot of weight to lose... i dont know how i would cope if i did have a lot to lose. Im just starting to realize how emotional hangups affect me. If someone had told me i would have called them a liar. Now i can see that for myself. I have reached over halfway on my weight loss... not to my credit though. i consider im very fortunate that in spite of my mental approach to it all, ive lost weight.

You need to give your self some credit....when I told my friends that I had the lap band placed I had many different reactions, but the one I remember more than anything is a friend with fear in her eyes said oh please be careful. she continued to say I knew a lady that when she ate she would binge eat and then throw up, it started happening so frequently that she actually ate over the sink, she ended up tearing her stomach, having to have the band removed, and her stomach put back together. It was not at all fun. I know we are both struggling with what to eat, and how to eat, but obviously we have learned when to stop eating, at least most of the time, or we would not be where we are at. Give your self some credit or you wont be able to move forward in the future.

I hope for both of us we can learn to eat healthier, I usually go about 3-4 months of wonderful eating "dieting" and then I eat the crap again. I ended up doing that again, but am trying to stay on track, it is one of the worst habits to brake. I hope we read or see something that helps break this cycle.

..more thoughts on this one Sophia. this is why the forum is so valuable... as much as the band is at times. theres nothing like learning of the experiences that others have. I agree...yes, there have been a lot of good changes when i think about it all. most of all the binging with me has stopped. it had to. lol. also, im taking a lot longer to chew my mouthfuls now... so yes, as i start to think about the positives im more encouraged. I guess that in time the other issues will be dealt with as well. I may have wanted everything to fall perfectly in place immediately... lol.

ive open up some black olives... got some very small crackers...( Im having them instead of chocolate now) and had a small salad for lunch with a boiled egg. i think that even these small changes will help me. im about to google ''leptin levels and fat loss'' and see what it has to say. Ohh... another thing. im discovering that i need to eat about 1200 calories a day for gradual weight loss... that is, just under a pound a week. If i go over that i gain weight again. my metabolism is very touchy. very sluggish now. if i eat much less than 1200 i dont lose either.. so that gives me a narrow margin to work with. At least now im starting to understand my body a little more.

I am so glad that you see a lot of the positive and it has motivated you!! that is a wonderful thing...and your right the chat boards and forums are very important considering I am to far from a support group. Have you thought about joining myfitnesspal.com? I use it from my phone it is amazing! It helps with the calories, since this is your main objective you may want to check it out....if you have a smart phone you can scan the bar code on what ever you are eating and it automatically looks it up for you...works about 95 percent of the time, i guess some items are just not imputed. if you do join look me up and check out my friends most are banded...I have found a lot of them use this and then my fitnesspal. I prefer 4-6 days of cardio ... about 40 minutes a session' date=' while continually challenging yourself. As things get easier - up the intensity - but no need to increase the duration. If you're exercising hard enough then 40 minutes is plenty and your muscles need time for recovery. Add in 1-2 full body strength training sessions a week and you should be good... I highly recommend a heart rate monitor to be certain your exercise is of sufficient intensity and allows you to more accurately track calories burned.

I have been exercising regularly since about a month post op. I have been increasing intensity and variety. I am a runner and I love that I can vary my workout through speed and hills. I also do strength training 2/3 days a week. I recently bought a heart rate monitor and was blown away by the difference in calories lost on the machine vs. my hr monitor.

I was wondering what heart rate I should stay in. I find that when I'm pushing my intensity (currently sprints to improve race pace) my monitor says I'm working too hard. if I don't push I will not improve. I still have about 55lbs to lose so I want to continue fat loss but I also want to improve overall fitness.

What do you think? It is so confusing!

The last time I posted in this thread was a long time ago and I had lost 60 something pounds. I am come a long way since then but I am still trying to eat 1000 calories and I am still losing.... however its a lot more slow now that I am 10 lbs from goal. I believe that the quanity is key.... but my limited math skills tells me there are more calories in a 1/2 c of french fries then 1/2 c of peas. But I would be lying if I told you I didnt have stuff over the past 22 months that I shouldnt have.... b ut I will tell you if I did it was never to excess. It might have been one cookie instead of 6. Or a dolup of sour cream instead of a cup full.... and yes... I can eat just one M&M and be happy! Its all about how bad you want success!

No, I guess it's more about what you eat. There are times that even if you don't eat much you still get fat. But there are some types of food that even if you consume large amounts of it, you don't get bigger.. Like what the dieticians always say, avoid fatty foods and eat fruits and vegetables instead. And it works well with the right attitude!online casino Australia

I read what Brad had to say, and I agree. I am brand new to the band, still on soft foods. However the calorie content is down to about 800 a day. That said…this last week since moving over to soft foods and away from the liquids I have not lost weight and have gained a pound.

I know it's true and our bodies adapt to the deprivation to survive. Mine has and is now fighting off an infection, one of my incisions was brewing under the surface that erupted this Sunday. It was gross and painful and now healing starts again. It's in a bad spot right at the waist so movement there is unavoidable. Like a cut on your knuckle or you knee it takes time but it eventually heals.

I know my body pretty well and even in the past as I would eat right and cut down the calories and pump up the work outs my body would not only adapt but rebel and fight against me often attacking itself and starting and immune system response that holds on and causes inflammation. Ultimately bringing me down, and making me sick.

So what do you? What is your advice to someone newly banded on soft foods, to modify their diet and step up their weight loss while still trying to heal?

Eating less of the same foods will work for awhile but eventually you'll have to have to switch up what you eat to lose more and get to goal.

I would discuss the best diet and exercise routine with your surgeon and follow that plan. However, to achieve your maximum potential you will have to get sufficient exercise. I just wouldn't want to push much while healing. Let your body focus on that first and foremost. Nonetheless, I'm wholeheartedly in the camp that low calorie diets are an awful way to treat your body and down right self destructive.

Do you have any recommended reading material(s) to help one figure out their body/nutritional requirements? I'm guessing there was a lot of reading behind your opinion...

I was banded early in 2012. The first year was rather successful, losing 80 lbs but now the momentum and motivation has started to slide. I need to 'shake it up' a bit. I want to lose another 50 lbs.

      Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

        I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

        I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.       On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
