Hi,

I had a BMI of 56.6 when I went in for surgery, now I'm at 47.1. Though my surgeon did say that I was a better candidate for the gastric sleeve, he did not discourage me from getting the band. He just told me that I have to work harder :0 No pain, no gain!!

Best of luck to you!

Lauren

Beba, at my surgery consult on 12/09 my bmi was 61. My surgeon does all of the bariatric surgeries, but I had already knew that lapband was for me. He made sure I knew my stuff and also asked exactly why I wanted that particular surgery. I had already made lifestyle changes so he was confident that I made a good informed decision and was a good candidate. Weight was never an issue...I was actually worried that he wouldn't do the surgery due to my size, but he quickly told me with a giggle that I was NOT the heaviest he had ever banded. I had surgery on 3/2 and I am doing well and down 37 lbs. So all in all if you have educated yourself and know that lapband (and all the hard work/maintenance afterward) is for you then stick to your guns. Because this is a long term commitment be sure that you're comfortable with the surgeon and his office staff. No one says you can't research others before making a decision.

I had a BMI of 51.2 when I started my pre-op diet. I know of people who have had much higher BMIs when they were banded.

If you don't want to have a bypass and you know that the band is right for you, don't let your doctor talk you into the RNY. Just make sure you know what you're getting in to

I was banded today! And I had a BMI of 55 when I started my consult a BMI of 53 when I started pre op and up until today I've lost about 20lbs (not sure what BMI that gives me no less than 51 though. I was banded this morning & my only complication was my nausea to the anesthesia. Not even 24hrs later I feel much better! And I think like everyone said you know yourself and what your true needs are. If you know you're commited to the lifestyle changes the band requires go for it! Its a lot easier to revise from the band than it is to go from the other WLSs to the band. Most doctors like many ppl look at ppl with higher BMIs as those who have extremely bad habits & lack of self control/comittment to make the band work so ofcourse they'll recommend faster somewhat easier options but you shouldn't let that opinion sway you. As long as ur healthy enough to go be approved for surgery get what you really want & are comfortable with!

Hi:

My BMI was over 68 when I went in and consulted with the doctor for the first time. He thought that a gastric bypass might be the better choice for me, but he supported my decision to have the lap band, and now that I have lost 250 lbs and am maintaining that loss for 4 years he has done many more bands on patients with high BMI's and he is secure in the fact that if we choose to make lifestyle changes we can get our weight loss with the band. Check out my journey at Sandi's Banded Living — My Lapband Weight Loss Success Story and see what it was like.

My BMI was 52, and my doctor was very happy that I decided to do the Lap Band. So, it can be done with those who have a high BMI.

When I had my first consult, I was over a 60% BMI. My doctor hinted at gastric as well because they assume like another poster said that people that size do not have the discipline or willpower, however did not say he would not do the surgery. I proved him wrong because by the time my surgery came I was under 60% and had lost 50lbs. I am more motivated than ever before now that I know I can keep it off. You can do this!!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
