Any May 2010 Bandsters?

I think I'm a toughie too, which is why I can't stand feeling like this!

I'm off the pain meds, have been for 4 days, so that's not it.

According to my doc, I'm on a soft food diet, so I'm eating cottage cheese, SF pudding, Jello, some Soups, but I'm still hungry!!

And my stomach growling is from hunger not gas. I feel like I've become an expert on differentiating between gas pains and other pain, LOL!!

I'm excited about the future, but right now I just have buyer's remorse :-(

I thought of myself as a toughie who could handle anything but I was seriously uncomfortable those first couple of days. I was the world's biggest baby and that usually is not me! So you're definitely not alone there. What really helped me was getting off the pain medication. That stuff makes me groggy and lifeless.

As for being hungry, I am sipping on something constantly because I can't take very large sips. If not a Protein shake or Water, then some kind of broth or low fat Soup. There's just no way you could get enough calories in in three meals. Your pouch can only take a couple of ounces at a time. So unless your doctor specifically told you otherwise, I wouldn't worry about the three meals a day until you're on mushies or full food again. Right now you need the calories to help with the healing. Don't starve yourself!

Also, I've notice my stomach doing the same growling thing, but I'm not sure it's hunger. It feels like it's just adapting in a particularly cranky way. I have a hard time differentiating between stomach hunger and gassy bloated discomfort.

So have I- It feels like I am hungry, but when I try to eat, I can't. Then I'll finally burp, and feel better. I will be glad when the gas is gone. I hate not knowing what by body is telling me it needs-

How long did it take you guys before you started getting hungry again? This is day two post op and my mom made me eat some Soup and apple sauce (at two different times)

and I felt so bloated after. I want nothing to do with food right now. I would like to just sleep till this pain goes away :-(

My Dr does liquids only for 2 weeks after. I am glad for it as I do NOT feel like really eating yet. Even the yogurt I am allowed makes me feel a little bloated. I hope you are feeling better soon. *Hugs*

I honestly didn't start really feeling hungry until about day 5-6. And I'm thanking GOD that I do not have a 2 week liquid diet after, just the first 5 days. Now I'm on to soft foods and can add fresh fruit tomorrow, yay!!! The funny thing is, is that I can add fish this weekend, and I HATE fish, but I am SOOOOO looking forward to it!!!:w00t:

Anyway, doing a little better today, still having major port site pain though. Last night was so bad that I was in tears!

I hope you all aren't having the pain that I'm having.

I have been feeling hungry the last two days. Had my surgery Friday- I don't know if he used a larger band on me or what, but the Jello just isn't cutting it. The nutritionist told me, and the lady in the class with me, not to eat yogurt during the first 2 weeks, but I had to- broth makes me want to throw up. I get so nauseated when I smell it- So I had to have something with some nutritional value. The yogurt seems to be doing fine, but I still feel hungry again within a couple of hours. I can definitely tell that I am going to need a fill when the time comes!!

I wish I knew too- I can't have soft foods until week 5- Then solids at week 6. I honestly don't know if I will make it that long. I don't have any energy-

Most surgeries have a general post op procedures to follow but this surgery seems to have a WIDE variety of post-op diets. I am on soft foods now and can have full solids in about 2 weeks maybe sooner if I am tolerating them. I have heard reasons for a 21 day liquids diet because it takes that long for the stomach to heal to they don't want them to have a sold BM. What the heck??? It's like every doctor has their own take on it. I am so glad mine is less conservative. I have deep respect for everyone who has a long liquid phase!!

The wide range is interesting. I guess my dr. is somewhere in the middle.

1-3 days Clear Liquids

10-14 days full liquids (including yogurt and pudding)

1 week mushy

1 week soft

then normal.

7 days since surgery. Today I was hungry or I seem to be thinking about food! I can have Protein Shakes with milk and Jello and Soups. Not much pain anymore unless I bend over of stretch. I have to look away at TV commercials for food!!!! I will try to stick to Dr. orders for liquids...but after hearing what other Dr. orders are I really don't think starting soft foods 1 week early is that big a deal.

Hi all... Was banded yesterday. Feeling sore today and haven't felt hungry at all. Basically I'm making myself have the broth and Jello. Water is my best friends as I woke up after surgery and was thirsty like crazy. Been trying to quench that thirst since then. Gas pains are the worst, but the pain meds keep that a minimum but still very uncomfortable. Not sleeping well, of course, but it feels much better moving around thank laying around. Tires you out quickly though. Sitting at the dining room table, this is where I'll feel the best, for now.

Feeling the incisions today but I believe its because I have some lingering gas in abdominal area. Hoping that disapates by tomorrow. On Clear Liquids til Tuesday, then full liquids for a week, then mush. Not in any hurry to eat because I'm afraid I'll get sick.

As for what I feeling before surgery, excited, not scared at all. More worried about going through all this and it not working. The nurse told me to think possitive and follow the doctors orders to a T, do not deviate. So, thats my plan.

I'll keep you posted on the daily progress.

Good luck to the upcoming bandster and the newbies.

I am getting banded Tuesday (the 25th). Not looking forward to that gas or port pain you are all talking about. I am on day 5 of my Liquid Protein pre-op diet and starving. I can't wait to get to the solid food stage.

You'll be fine. I don't have any port pain. Heck.. until yesterday I didn't even know where it was... then the doc made me feel it.

Don't worry.. you can walk off the gas pains... Good luck wiht your surgery.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
