Country Fried Chicken - The Healthier Version
I love KFC and mustard. Anyone who knows me, knows that. But now that I'm eating healthier, KFC is out of the question (except I ate a bit today...It was only potato though...Don't judge me, I haven't eaten junk food in months!). Anyways, here's a good recipee for Faux Fried Chicken: 1 lb chicken tenders or boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into thin strips 3 Tbsp Dijon mustard (Or just use wholegrain mustard with egg) 2 1/2 c cornflakes 2 tsp minced fresh sage 1 tsp minced fresh thyme BBQ or honey-mustard sauce (optional) 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Using a pastry brush, coat each piece of chicken with Dijon mustard. 2. In a food processor or blender, combine the cornflakes, sage, thyme, and salt and pepper to taste. Pulse to a coarse meal and transfer to a shallow dish. Dredge each chicken strip in the cornflake mixture until evenly coated. Place on baking sheet and bake until cooked through, 8 to 10 minutes. Serve with dipping sauce, if desired. Makes 4 servings. Per serving: 170 cal, 0.5 g fat (0 g sat fat), 15 g carbs, 1 g fiber, 360 mg sodium, 27 g protein. P.S: Sorry if this has been posted before. :blushing:

Fast Food As Addictive As Heroin, Study Confirms
Scientist have previously proven links between drug addiction and fast-food addiction, but now there is a growing body of research that is finding out how junk food is hard wiring our brains for cravings. The latest study, published March 28 in "Nature Neuroscience," likened the affects of high-fat, high-calorie fast food to those of cocaine or heroin, in animals at least. The researchers showed that the pleasure-center in rats brains were overstimulated from the fast food similar to an addict's cocaine binge. Eventually, the pleasure centers became so overloaded that rats needed more and more food to feel normal, according to Paul H. Kenny, an associate professor of molecular therapeutics at the Scripps Research Institute. Throughout the study, Kenny and his co-author studied three groups of lab rats for 40 days. The first group ate healthy food. The second ate a limited amount of junk food. The third group, however, was allowed to gorge on high-fat, high-calorie foods and became obese. The startling side effect? The brains of the obese rats changed. "The body adapts remarkably well to change -- and that's the problem," Kenny said in a press release. "When the animal overstimulates its brain pleasure centers with highly palatable food, the systems adapt by decreasing their activity. However, now the animal requires constant stimulation from palatable food to avoid entering a persistent state of negative reward". During the study, the rats lost complete control over the ability to regulate whether they were hungry, often eating despite electric shocks. When the obese rats were put on a healthy diet, they refused to eat, starving themselves for two weeks. In another study, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City showed that feeding rats a diet high in saturated fat, calories and sugar -- which is the typical make-up for a fast-food menu item -- lowered the rats ability to respond to leptin, a hormone that helps regulate eating behavior by controlling how full one feels. As rats grew fatter, the amount of leptin in their bodies increased signaling that they were dangerously close to starvation. They continued to overeat and gain weight. Those who yo-yo diet face similar problems that those going through withdrawal do, Boston University researchers proved last year. According to Pietro Cottone, an assistant professor in the Laboratory of Addictive Disorders at BU, dieters seek out foods to avoid the negative feelings that they experience if they are deprived of their favorite comfort foods. "These findings confirm what we and many others have suspected," Kenny said, "that over-consumption of highly pleasurable food triggers addiction-like neuroadaptive responses in brain reward circuitries, driving the development of compulsive eating. Common mechanisms may therefore underlie obesity and drug addiction." Found here: Fast Food As Addictive As Heroin, Study Confirms - That's Fit P.S: Sorry if this has already been posted. :blushing:

Help! Can't stop burping - 2 weeks post surgery
Hi, Is it possible you could go to the chemist to get something to relief gas?

Yay for my band!
Woohoo! Congrats! I ate some KFC today. Blergh...It was a mixture of potato and chips...I felt like crap afterwards, but I could hardly eat anything. Yes, it's a fantastic feeling to look at food and not want to scoff the whole lot! P.S: UFC is awesome. Cheers.

Do you measure your food? If so... how much do you eat in a sitting?
My surgeon or my doctor doesn't seem to find a problem with it...I'm getting all of the nutrients I need. Protein isn't a problem for me because I drink Protein shakes and 3 days after my fill I still find it hard to eat meat. I eat a variety of different lettuces and usually that's just so I have an excuse to use mustard. Mustard is my favourite. Instead of snacking on Cookies and biscuits like I used to, I snack on celery and it makes me full...I don't see a problem with that at all. It's also hard for me to find foods that I actually CAN eat, so I'm sticking to fruits and vegtables...Which is good, so I don't understand the fuss this has caused. It's not like I only eat 1 meal a day...I eat heaps a day, it's just really really healthy food. This is because my band is very tight at the moemnt and fruit and vegtables have a lot of Water in them and are easier to swallow...I think everyone should eat leafy greens when they're hungry. I enjoy drinking protein shakes too... Maybe I put it in a context that was hard to understand... Here, I'll sum up my day a little better. and no, I'm not being a smartarse. I wake up and have a Protein shake. I go for a 20 minute walk. I then eat celery because it makes me full and goes down easy (besides the stringy part, I have to spit that out). I eat a stick at a time and eat some whenever I get hungry. For lunch I either have a protein shake or I'll have an early dinner, which I won't finish (because it's in quite a large bowl) which consists of different types of lettuces coated in mustard. I use mustard instead of dressing - I love mustard. Then I'll go for a 40 minute walk, or I'll break it up to two 20 minute walks. I can never eat the whole bowl, so I eat that for dinner. At the moment I am very tight from the fill I've just had, so obviously I'd rather use the small amount of food I can eat as fruits and nutrient filled vegtables, rather than calorie enriched ones. If you get enough nutrients, then your body doesn't go into starvation mode. I also make sure I'm eating throughout the day and don't get hungry. I think I just put it the wrong way. There's honestly nothing wrong with what I'm doing. If you follow the Optifast rules, you're actually meant to gradually go into eating salads and light meals. I eat leafy green vegtables also because I was low on Vitamin D, which I'm assuming I no longer am.

When it comes to my bloodwork I'm apparently very healthy besides Vitamin D. I am too tight, I had my first fill a few days ago...Since then I can only eat food that has a lot of Water in it - like fruits and vegtables. I drink Protein shakes that have more Vitamins and minerals in it than what I used to eat before the band. Lettuce and mustard is my favourite food...and very low on calories. Mmmmm. It's also one of the few things I can eat before I get an unfill. Edit: I eat lots fo leafy vegtables as well to get Vitamin D. I also walk for an hour a day - so I'm assuming I'm getting better in that area thanks to leafy vegtables and sun exposure.

Help! Getting Banded on Monday and still haven't chosen a protein shake!
Optifast has been proven to shrink your liver, which increases your chance of a successful surgery. 3 meals is also under 500 calories a day. I'm still on it 2/3 of the day because I lose a lot of weight on it.

Thrush
That's crazy. I know when I had mine done it was difficult for me to lay down and I was bitching and complaining about how I couldn't lay down for a few days and my back hurt but damn...I guess it could've been worse for me. Glad you're ok now.

Do you measure your food? If so... how much do you eat in a sitting?
I just eat a bowl of food for dinner early and if I can't finish it, I later eat it at night when I'm hungry again. It's usually just lettuce and wholegrain mustard. The rest of my food just consists of a stick of celery or an Optifast shake. So yeah, I don't really measure it or anything.

9 days post op and sooo hungry
I cheated :-) But I wish I hadn't...Because now I'm paranoid that my band doesn't work because I don't have appetite supression. Oh, I also ate something that got stuck. Baby food on the first week when I was meant to be on liquids...It passed through quickly but increasing the chances of that increases your chances of having a slipped band. At the moment your band is trying to heal into place, if you overdo it by cheating, you'll mess it up. So maybe try not to do that. Just eat more throughout the day so you don't feel as hungry, I guess.

AM I Eating too much...if I am I gotta get back on track
Like Betsy said, everyone's different. But I think you'll find that scientifically your body reacts to lack of nutrients rather than lack of calories.

AM I Eating too much...if I am I gotta get back on track
Hi, Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure starvation mode kicks in when you're not getting enough nutrients and calories, thus taking them from muscles and organs. From my understanding, it's perfectly safe as long as you're getting the right nutriants and Vitamins your body needs - which can be done quite easily under 1000 calories. I heard that your body can go into starvation mode and hang to every calorie by eating even 3000 calories a day if you're not getting enough nutrients. A lot of approved shakes on the market are under 500 calories, but are successful because they offer some - if not all of the nutrients you need. If you eat less, your metabolism goes down (which I honestly don't think is that much of a problem as it's usually too small of an adjustment to worry about), but it's easy to eat a lot under 1000 calories and feel full. Basically you can eat 1000 calories of fat and go into starvation mode, or you can eat 1000 calories and be eating good food with lots of nutrients and not have a problem. It's not about the calories, it's whats in the food you're eating. Sure, it's hard, but it's not impossible and not everyone who eats less than 1000 calories a day goes into starvation mode. I'm currently at a plateaux and have had to go back onto Optifast which is less than 500 calories a day for me. I'm still losing weight, just slower than I was to begin with, though it's starting to pick up now that I've changed my diet. It's also been proven that the slower you lose weight the more muscle you keep. So unless you're losing 8 kilos a week from eating under 1000 calories I honestly don't see a problem with it. It's entirely achievable, and for someone who now enjoys fresh fruit and rarely gets full, I can honestly say it's easier than it looks.

Airport scanners and the band

AM I Eating too much...if I am I gotta get back on track
Welllll I try to eat less than 1000 calories a day. The other day I ate 2700, so you can imagine the exercise I had to do to stop myself from feeling very very guilty. I also exercise for an hour a day...The kilos aren't particularly falling off for me, so I guess I have to work harder. In the end it depends on how hungry you are. Just make sure you're eating less calories than you're burning off and don't torture yourself or you might binge. But yeah, I wouldn't go over 1200 calories (despite the fact that I did the other day. argh.) to lose weight. If you go on Optifast you eat less than 500 calories a day...Now THAT'S hard lol.

Starting to regret getting Lap Band
I know this is off track but I think you look great and you've lost a lot of weight. That's soemthing you should be proud of. I was sort of thinking maybe I should've just had gastric bypass too...When people ask me if I think they should get it done, I tell them to get the sleeve or a gastric bypass...The fills are annoying, but in the end the most important thing is that you're atleast a bit healthier than you were pre-op.

Airport scanners and the band
Not sure how similar they are, but I had a CT scan after my surgery to check for blood clots and it all seemed ok with me. :-) I thought those machines were magnetic...Freaky...

AM I Eating too much...if I am I gotta get back on track
Everyday I enter what I eat into my account at fitday.com It tells you how many calories you've burnt and how many you've eaten. It also does a bunch of other stuff. It might be helpful to you to keep on track and know roughly how many calories you're burning and intaking. Cheers, WrenBird.

Mucus?
Yep. Same thing happened to me. When you're in surgery and they give you a tube to breath, saliva trickles down your throat and into your lungs. When this happens the lungs react with producing mucus that's easier to cough up to get the other stuff out of your lungs. It's happened to me everytime I've had surgery.
