  1. It is a lifestyle change. Something that you can live with for the rest of your life.

Can you live with hating yourself and feeling guilty for enjoying a little tasty food? I couldn't.

DO NOT diet or allow yourself to have the dieting mentality. Diets have end dates and if you avoid foods that you love, you will only crave them more.

There are no bad foods when eaten in moderation.

Just cut your portions a little or substitute foods with something just as tasty but more healthy.

  2. Lighten up!!

Pizza and chips are not bad. Eating too many or too much is bad and it sounds like you knew your limit and logged them. Congrats!

Good luck with the fill. I have yet to be banded and am not looking forward to fills. I am a big wimp when it comes to needles.

  3. Welcome and while you are waiting; do as much more research as possible to make sure that the lapband is for you. Nobody can make that decision but you.

The lapband is a ring that goes around the upper portion of your stomach. The ring has a balloon on the inside so that it can be tightened and untightened. In order to do this, saline fluid is put into the balloon. That is what a fill is.

Your insurance company and surgeon determine whether you have to lose weight or not.

You'll see the word "tool" a thousand times while you read. The lapband is only a tool. The lapband doesn't make the weight magically disappear. YOU have to do that. The lapband basically makes it so you feel full with less food and don't overeat.

The lapband will not work unless you are ready to change your lifestyle and do what is required to make it work.

  4. Call a surgeon or bariatric center in your area and get the ball rolling. While your balls are rolling you will most likely have a 3 to 6 month supervised diet period required by insurance. Use this time wisely to research as much as you can about the lapband procedure and your surgeon.

Most of all, be very aware that the lapband is not a magic pill it is a tool. It does not make you lose weight. YOU have to lose the weight yourself by limiting your portions. The lapband will help by making you feel full sooner. You have to be ready to change your eating habits for the rest of your life.

If you have questions, ask them here or of your surgeon's staff. Do NOT hold back. There is no such thing as a stupid question. Especially when dealing with your wellbeing.

    Good luck and good banding!

  5. Thanks for the support all!

Your assumptions about me are frightening because you were all right on the money.

At this point, I do plan on going through with the surgery and unless I get an epiphany in the next couple of weeks; it will happen.

I am responding to people on the forums that have the same concerns that I do in a positive manner and am not sure about myself. I am basically using them as pawns to reassure myself. Is that a bad thing?

  6. Thanks.

Actually, "software engineer" is in my title somewhere.

An approaching birthday kicked this all off. I had my first consultation a full week prior to the heart ache. But the heart attack did help quit smoking. So, maybe it is what is helping me stay on track now.

I guess we can assume that heart attacks are tools for immediate weight loss and the lapband for long term? :Dancing_wub:

  7. Love the cartoon YM!

After seeing somebody start the "Do some research" thread yesterday and seeing the responses I have gotten here; I realize it is not in my head and I am not the only one concerned.

I'm not even banded yet and it seems I know a lot more than a lot of the bandsters. I know I will still have a few questions once banded and I hope there are enough qualified people to give me good answers.

"Don't worry, once you get fills you will start losing weight" is NOT a good answer!

  8. Use a couple of the tax dollars you are stealing and buy a dictionary. I show plenty of apathy every day.

    ap⋅a⋅thy  [ap-uh-thee]

    –noun, plural -thies.

    1. absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement.

    2. lack of interest in or concern for things that others find moving or exciting.

    3. Also, ap⋅a⋅thei⋅a, ap⋅a⋅thi⋅a [ap-uh-thee-uh]. Stoicism. freedom from emotion of any kind.

  9. I got on the scale this morning as I do every morning because I never listen to the little voice that says once a week is enough.

Well, anyways, it said 305. I am down 60 pounds, 15% of my starting weight since I started this journey.

I am NOT dieting. I am eating the same things. I just cut the portions a little and am logging everything. I don't go to bed hungry like I always have on other diets.

I have NOT been working out. I have been walking and doing a teenie bit of running about 5 hours a week. I stretch for about 5 minutes every morning and pick up my 10 lb dumbbell for about 10 minutes 2 or 3 times a week. But I am not waking up sore like I have from other work outs.

I have NOT been banded. I've lost a lot of weight and post on this site a lot with my cool little ticker. But I have not been banded yet like other posters.

A lot of my weight loss has been with the help of the Bodybugg. Other has come from the nutritionists at my surgeons office.

I will schedule my LAP-BAND® surgery in 6 days. It will probably be for the first week of February.

I am having second thoughts. I am doing so well without the LAP-BAND® that it has me wondering if I need it at all. I am still about 80% - 20% in favor of getting it but that number is dwindling.

This scares me because I have lost a lot more than 60 lbs in the past only to gain it back and them some. But in the past I was dieting. This is different.

And if I decide not to get banded I have to stop being sarcastic and witty here :Dancing_wub:

I guess only time will tell.

  10. It's real easy.

Go to Graphical Tickers and Trackers: Weight Loss, Trying To Conceive, Pregnancy...

Click on "Weight Loss" in the Weight Loss / Fitness section

Select a design, and click "Next"

Select a slider and click "Next"

    Under Setup

Choose a password enter it and DO NOT forget it

Answer the questions under Weight Measurements

Answer the questions under Body Mass Index

    Click Next

Right click somewhere inside the box that says bbCode and choose "Select All"

Right click inside that same box and choose Copy

Then on LapBandTalk (this site) click on "User CP"

Then in Settings & Options, click on "Edit Signature"

Right click in the big white box and choose Paste

    Click Submit

  11. Having the band and getting fills don't make you lose weight.

It is how many calories you are eating and how many calories you are burning.

Are you logging what you eat? That is a start and it really helps.

Use this calculator to find your Body Mass Ratio (BMR) BMR Calculator

Your BMR is how many calories you burn with no activities.

To lose 2 pounds a week, you want to eat 1,000 calories less than your BMR every day. 500 calories less for 1 pound a week.

  12. I have my final pre-surgery nutritionist appointment on Wednesday and my paperwork is being submitted to Aetna after my final pre-surgery consult with the surgeon on January 6th.

I have been reading these boards almost religiously since September to get an idea of what to expect. Surprisingly, it seems that many of the people that been banded have more questions than I do.

I've put together a list of pet peeves I have on this site. If one or more of them sounds like you and you are offended; frankly, I don't care. Save your breath.

    1. The following 3 questions are asked all of the time and there should be a canned response:

Q1: I've had my band for a while. Why I am not losing weight?

Q2: Will I lose weight after I get fills?

Q3: How long after I get banded will I start losing weight?

The band and fills do not directly affect your weight loss. If you don't change your eating habits and start exercising, the band probably won't work for you.

    2. This is the latest I have been seeing and I just want to strangle the posters: "I'm afraid I will have loose skin."

Yo! You are morbidly obese and looking at an early grave. Do you really think that "bingo wings" or saggy boobs are any less attractive than blubber? Worry about the weight first. The plastic surgeon can fix the rest afterward if need be.

    3. Another favorite: "I was recently banded and can still eat as much as I want."

Perhaps you should have done a little research before having surgery and a foreign object implanted in your body! Little or no restriction is realized until you have a fill or 2. Meanwhile, just because you can eat everything in sight, doesn't mean you have to. Try using just a little bit of willpower.

    4. "I cheated on pre-surgery diet"

Do you understand that you're undergoing surgery that will require you to modify your eating habits for the rest of your life? If you can't control yourself for a week or two maybe you should rethink getting a LAP-BAND®.

    5. Women replying in the men's forum.

Ladies, when a man asks a question in "The Men's Room"; he is most likely looking for advice from men. If not, he would have posted it in the general discussion forum.

I better quit before I get in trouble :)

O.K., one more and perhaps the most minor of them all; we do not "loose" weight. We may have loose skin after losing weight but we do not "loose" weight.

  13. I looked at by-pass, then the sleeve, then lap band.

I decided on the band because I can always have it removed later if it don't work out.

The sleeve is still considered experimental by some insurance companies and they won't pay for it.

It is permanent whereas the band is not.

You have to take a bunch of vitamins for the rest of your life.

It is a personal choice and there is plenty of material on the web to do the right research.

  14. Hi, I'm new here and won't be banded until January or February but I can answer these :huh2:

    1. Sweet potatoes are a vegetable and not necessarily bad if eaten in moderation.

    2. Chocolate and pizza can be healthy using the right ingredients and eaten in moderation.

    3. Don't laugh, I have been thinking about this one for weeks. I love Aruba!

    4. You tell them the truth or that it is none of their business. You aren't obligated to tell anyone anything.

  15. It's real easy.

    - Create the ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com/

    - Copy the code it creates in the bbCode box

    - Then on LapBandTalk (this site) click on "User CP"

    - Then in Settings & Options, click on "Edit Signature"

    - Paste the code you copied and click Submit

Remember, it will only show in the forums not blogs.

If you want to see it here, you need to post the code here each time.

  16. It doesn't work in blogs. You have to post in the forums to see it work.

Or just go to "User CP" and in Settings & Options, click on "Edit Signature"

Where you originally posted the code, you should see your ticker.

If you want to put a ticker in the blog, you can paste the code every time I think
