It's been 3 years with lapband
You can do this! We know you can, because you went through all the hard work of getting banded. Posting here is a great first step. Another step would be to get a slight fill and get into a support group. Never give up...Don't look back...Start tomorrow anew..And move forward!

the scary stories dont help!
I don't like needles. Yet, I donate blood every other month and get my fills every month. And I have my blood tested every month for my bariatric doctor. But I never ever look at the needles. I turn my head or close my eyes, but I never look at the needles. Out of my sight therefore out of my mind.

Serious Second Thoughts
Your right the band is a tool and will not help you to select food. You can eat foods with the band, which will cause you to gain weight, which really defeats the purpose of the band. If you have an issue with snacking and eating sweets and carbs, you might want to consider the by-pass surgery. Talk to your doctor and get his/her recommendation. Good luck!

Need a first fill
Yep Kiz, I hear you. I am coming up on two weeks this Wed and I am hoping the restriction stays with me and I do not lose any more of my fill.

Octuplets and SIX other children??!!!
I cannot wait to see the entire video on NightLine tomorrow night. They are suppose to show pictures of all the new babies. I wonder how much money she is getting for appearing on that show?

3 things you're going to do when you've lost enough wgt (discretion advised)
1. Take airplane flights without feeling like a big girl and travel the world. 2. Go on roller coaster rides without wondering if I will fit in the ride. 3. Run a marathon, which I am training for right now.

Need a first fill
That is a long time to go without having a fill. Why was there a delay with getting your first fill? With each fill I received at the doctor's office, I would have restriction for a couple of weeks and then nothing. My last fill was on January 28, so I am hoping my restriction will last longer than two weeks. Good luck!

Be honest - slight unfill before a vacation?
I think your question is reasonable and you should not be flogged for feedback. I personally, would not get an unfill for the cruise, as it implies my primary focus of the cruise is food. Will you not be able to eat on the cruise as you eat now at home? Why the need for the unfill? Is it because you want to consume more food than what you can now? If it is, I would question the real reason why you are going on the cruise. Is the cruise for eating or sight seeing? How will you explain the slight unfill to your doctor? I also wonder where does the bad food concept derive from? There are no bad foods. Good luck!

the scary stories dont help!
My three fills have been non-eventful. No pian during the procedure, which was not by fluro. I have not been over-filled. I have never had an issue with slime, bps, heartburn, vomit, or being stuck with the band. I think it is important to be aware of possible issues. However, I think it is equally important to share your concerns with your doctor. If you are not to squeemish, watch a fill video on YouTube. Every person's fill experience is different. Realize for every bad fill experience you read about that there are five times as many good fill experiences. Your chances for a fill complication are less with fluro technology. Follow you doctor's post fill instructions and you should have no problem.

It was a couple of years of research and fear before I actually worked up the nerve to speak to my PC.

Life Insurance after lap band
I am very interested in this post. Please let us know what their reason was when you find out. Right now, I have employer life insurance, but I am planning to retire and would need to find my private life-insurance.

Doctors note for lap band surgery
HIPPA protects your right not to disclose your medical information to anyone. FMLA protects your right to keep your job, while you recover from a health matter, which will keep you away from your job for a period of time. Or FMLA can be used intermittently. There are requirements of FMLA, so here is a link for your review. U.S. Department of Labor - Employment Standards Administration (ESA) - Wage and Hour Division (WHD) - Family and Medical Leave Act You do not have to provide any detail regarding your health issue to your employer. You do need to provide a medical note for a long term absence. My employer does not know I was banded. I actually took two weeks off on vacation time. Plus, I am on FMLA for my monthly follow up appointments with my bariatric surgeon. My surgeon had to complete my employers FMLA verification form. I instructed my doctor not to place the name of the bariatric center on the FMLA form or to send me any documentation paper work that would state bariatric or weight loss on it. I basically instructed my doctor to just sign her name, as I did not want to disclose what medical issues I was under. As you know, a lot of doctors have standard forms that reflect the name of their centers and what type of doctor they are. Good luck!

stomach sleepers
My port is near the far left side of my stomach and I happen to sleep on my left side for the most part. At first, right after surgery, I would lay on my right side. But now I am back to the left side with no problem. It is weird how we have a tendency to sleep a certain way.

What FINALLY made you decide to get banded??
Self-isolation was primary to my decision as well as health issues.

If you had the choice bw Realize & LB
It was a toss up for me and I actually switched my band choice right before surgery. I selected the AP band because it has a longer track record. And I did not like all the posts I kept reading about Realize bandsters who were almost filled to capacity and had not achieved restriction.

Don't look if squeamish!
Very cool!

I want a salad
I cannot imagine why anyone would ban lettuce. Now it might be a matter if you and your band can tolerate lettuce. I eat lettuce without problem.

Questions on Ever Eating Normal
I eat anything in moderation. I basically have the same diet pre-band, but I am eating way way less food. I don't have issues yet with being stuck, vomiting, sliming, or bps with any of the food I consume. I know some people have issues with certain food and the band. As of yet, I have not had those issues. (I hope I never do) The reason why I selected the band was so that I can eat a well rounded diet, which includes fruit, veggies, meat, and grains without the issues with malabsorption. I never drank soda before, so I did not have to give that up. Every now and then I will have wine and I do have coffee every morning. I am losing weight and I am really pleased with my results. Good luck!

I don't think my surgeon has enough experience with lap band!
Another good rule is selecting a Bariatric Center of Excellence. The doctors and the hospital receive this recognition after meeting several requirements. The insurance I have only referred me to Bariatric doctors who were working at a Bariatric Center. If you would like to learn about this, below is a link. Surgical Review Corporation As one of the other posters mention, aftercare is critical. I really enjoy my aftercare with my doctor. But it goes further than that, how do the support staff treat you, such as the nurses, PA, clerical staff, psychiatrist, and nutritionist. The bariatric center I attend, has all these positions centrally located in one office area. And what are the support groups like? I suppose most importantly, how many deaths occurred at the center during the surgery and/or during recovery? What is the centers complication rates, such as slip bands, infections, and port flips??? These were all questions I asked my doctor and the Chief Bariatric surgeon who assisted her. It is a lot too consider, so good luck with your decision. :-)
