Emailkariann reacted to CocoNina in Taking a Cruise after Surgery
I went on an all-inclusive vacation 5 months post op because of my anniversary with my hubby. It's not a cruise but similar (unlimited food, drinks, and can go on excursions). At first I used the regular players but could not finish, it looked like I never touched the food. A light bulb came to my head & I used the small desert plates for my meals. Thankfully, my hubby ate anything I couldn't finish. I didn't get any comments from the weight staff.

    Surgery date: 2/13/17
Goal: -71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs).
Current weight: 145 lbs, now ready to lose 15 more past goal.

Lol...this is the best post ever!!! Totally describes exactly how I feel...confused as to why I don't feel worse? And yes, pre-op so much harder than post op.

I have lost only 16 lbs at 5 weeks so I am frustrated along with you. Had hoped for much quicker weight loss. I'm grateful for no complications, however.

Give up the Protein Shakes and eat real Protein. Your body burns more calories when processing real food. You are also fuller for longer.

Do you weigh all your food and track it? You posted very vague things about what you eat in a day.
What are your macros like daily? What is your protein goal? Do you hit it every day?
Why doesn't you Dr do surgery anymore? Do you think it is possible your sleeve was done incorrectly.

No oatmeal or grains at all. I'm surprised it's on an approved list from a bariatrics center.

My surgery was June 19. Good recovery--I was back at work in 2.5 weeks. I'm eating gentle real foods now and supplementing with at least 1 Protein shake/day. Around 400-500 calories/day. I have been on a weight plateau for about a week now after losing 25 since surgery.
One thing I have noticed is that while I have more energy throughout the day, once I get tired I hit the wall. It's good to be aware of this and take care of myself by getting enough rest.
And of course, when I hit the stall my inner tape recorder started up with "You are eating too much!" Hah! 500 calories of 95% protein? I think not! (That is my reply to the tape recorder).
I am so glad I did this. I'm 62 and I'll be retiring in a few years. It's so great to know that I will not retire as an invalid but as a healthy active person looking forward to the next thing.

I love Dr. Weiner, haven't gone back to watch his videos postop.. (need to).. but I also have the concern about Protein. The best vegetable sources are Beans and seeds/nuts. It takes about 4oz of beans to get 7g of protein, and 1oz of nuts to get 7g protein. (Give or take a gram, depending on type). We would have to eat 4oz of nuts plus 16oz beans to meet our minimum requirements. (That would be all I could eat in a day, spread out among 8 "meals") There wouldn't be a leafy vegetable in sight.
But, if you replace 16oz beans with 4oz fish or meat, then suddenly things become much easier. Keep 1oz nuts, and replace the other 3 with egg, dairy, and beans.. now we're getting a nice round diet that still has room for fruits and veggies.

Today I have been snacking like no ones business, kind of. Today I had a sandwich. It was a mini sandwich that took me the day to eat, I hate it in halves. I then ate fruit and snacked on two Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I did not need them but they were awesome! I have still been losing weight and I have been being careful, but today was crazy. I will not punish myself but I will also continue to watch my portions, exercise and LIVE!

This is a dangerous thread because its not particularly productive to measure yourself against others- our own journey is a highly individualized experience.

Men do better than women normally. Fatties like me do better than the "lightweights" who started at a more reasonable weight.

Sometimes people get frustrated that they're not losing as much as "everyone else" when in reality, they are doing GREAT by their own standards.

    Proceed with caution!

You've lost 16 pounds in about a month. That isn't slow at all. To put it in perspective, I weighed 400 pounds when I started my journey, and I believe that I lost 15 pounds that first month. Everything about this journey is a marathon, not a sprint.

My only thought is that you are pushing your body to far. I wasn't cleared for working out more than going for a walk until 4-6 weeks after surgery.

    I would say I'm 90 % vegan LOL
I am eating far more vegetables and legumes as well fruit than meat or fish. I also have cut out carbs/ ie bread, rice, Pasta. There are so many more options out there to sub.
Cauliflower seems to be the new veg on the go right now and I find it subs for a lot of carb related recipes. Another veg I use if I feel like pasta is Spaghetti squash it really looks and acts like real pasta.

Great news!! I restricted my eating to only Protein, vegetables and blueberries and lost 17 lbs this month!! No sugar or processed food whatsoever. I feel absolutely amazing.

I was so down trodden and depressed. I visited the dietitian at my Bariatric office and followed her plan to the T.

I'd be happy to share details if you'd like.

    We can do it!!

Emailkariann got a reaction from Half-Tum in What should I have AT HOME immediately after surgery
For me here two things were crucial that I didn't expect: a recliner so I could sleep sitting up and score reflux medicine (I used gavascon and a ppi, like medium). Post surgery I had tremendous pain from acid reflux and when I would fall asleep, acid would shoot up and I would choke. Luckily I was able to borrow a recliner and it literally saved me. If you don't have a recliner, anything (wedge foam pillow) that allows you to sleep upright will be a lifesaver. I am 3 weeks post surgery and I still sleep in recliner 50% of time.

We hardly have any restriction at all. I went back on Protein Shakes. I eat l meal a day. We have no bread or Pasta in our home in 4 years. No carbs. My husband lost 100 lbs and can eat anything. Our age is 70. I just bought a treadmill so hoping I can get moving since we can't get out and walk. Some nights we have steamed cabbage for dinner. Lots of fish. I will not give up!

I am scheduled to have gastric sleeve on June 16th. I am having a lot of conflicting thoughts and feelings about the surgery and whether or not it is the right thing for me. On one hand I am so tired of diets and have given up hope of being able to do it on my own and on the other hand I don't think the surgery gets to the root of overeating...I really feel so stuck and was wondering if any of you felt this way prior to surgery and how you reconciled this?
