Carlotta1 got a reaction from Gojogo in I have lost 50% of my excess weight so far.
I am so excited about the success I am having with the sleeve surgery. I am half way losing my excess weight. I was scared and doubtful having the sleeve ..whether I would be alive or lose weight post surgery. I had the lap band 7 years ago, and it did not work for me. The sleeve was so different. My hunger has really subsided ..I don't think about food much. Exercise has helped me with a stall I had for two weeks. I am enjoying food, but healthier and much, much less. I never thought I was a big ester be just liked sweets too much.. I think our society has forgotten what a decent serving pg size is to not gain weight. I was one of those people. I hardly eat out anymore. And if I do, I am shocked how many calories are in food at a restaurant. I do allow myself to have very little taste of rich foods when I do eat out. " I do want to break the all or non mentally ". One big change post op is my desire for sweets..I was a sugarholic. High fat and high sugar sweets were my binge foods. Now I do not crave these foods, even when they r offered to me. At 60 years old ..that is a miracle in itself. I do not look like my age. More like 45 yrs old, as I have been told many times .I am lucky I did not get the wrinkle genes or saggy ones. . More importantly, my cholesterol and blood pressure has improved since my surgery. I hope to get off my Bp soon. I was so afraid of getting diabetes if I continued on my path of not taking care of my body. I had a brother in law who due to the complications of this disease.
I have struggled with my weight since I was in 11th grade. 20 or so pounds.. Constantly yo yo ing.
Then in my 50 s the weight really started to pack on. My highest was 215. I was miserable. My weight loss efforts looked like this: I had full body Lipo suction twice in my late 40's , went to OA meetings , (approx $45,000 for both lipo surgeries ). Went on so, so meny diets. Lose and gain, lose and gain.. The lapband,
liquid diets, I joined and rejoined weight watchers about 30 times in my life. Etc etc etc. So for those who think that having the sleeve was a cop out. Look at my insanity for years. I could have taken a trip around the world for the money I spent on "diets". I am seeing a psychiatrist who specializes in binge eating ( pre and post op )and a nutritionist . I Know the sleeve is a tool ..so I need to make sure I work on my mental state as we'll as l to address my food issues. I starting going to a psych two months before I had surgery, every week.
I have new found energy and health. I am looking to the future. Going to st lucia next month at the sandals resort.. So I am looking forward to sailing, snorkeling, hiking in the rainforest, and sun bathing. I also want to thank members on this website for their continued support. I log in every morning at bariatricpal ..it sets my tone before I start the day..of commitment and determination to achieve my goals for the next 40 years. LIFE IS MET TO BE GOOD.

Suggest u keep track of foods u eat (I love myfitnesspal and it is free). I am 8 weeks out and ...my goal is 800 calories per day and 65-70'grams off Protein.per day. I do eat fruit with my Protein shakes..sometimes bran cereals with milk, veggies, very little rice, 1/2 slice of 40 calorie bread, I try to eat my Protein first. And many times I cannot anything else on my plate cause I am completely satisfied.
Exercise has really helped me with a stall I was having for two weeks. I Do cardio for 30 minutes at a medium strenuous pace..the I do machines for my upper /lower body.
Get back to basic and u should start losing again. Also r u eating very salty food. ..part of your weight gain maybe be salt retention.

R u logging what u r eating. I use myfitnesspal. If u r, u can show your nut or doc what u typically est.. Since I have been logging what I eat., I know I am getting enough Protein and calories.. I am 8 weeks out and my target protein is 65-70 grams and 800 calories. Don't let the nut get u upset if u r following the food protocol.

I am eight weeks out and I had the same exact experience as you. The scale would NOT move for two weeks. I upped my Protein. From 60 to 70 grams and went to the gym and pushed myself with cardio and weights for one hour , 5 times a week and I lost 3 pounds that first week I did this. So for me exercise did it for me. P..s. . It is also good for us to exercise to tone our bodies.

Carlotta1 reacted to MichiganChic in Please help: how to not feel like a failure?
I have a different point of view. I don't feel like a failure because I had weight loss surgery and succeeded in losing over 100 pounds. I'm also not sure who all those other successful people are you reference, since statistically most people re-gain the weight they lose without WLS. I can't tell you how to feel - they are your feelings and you are entitled to them. Do I wish I had been able to maintain a thin body my whole life? Sure. Can I change my past? Nope. What I CAN do is choose to embrace the gift I was given, and feel good about doing it.
Having said all that - I don't think I'd have a surgery that I wasn't totally comfortable with. It's a very personal decision, it impacts your life in every way, and it's not without risk. I considered it for 15 years before I actually did it. It wasn't right for me at the time. Now that it's done and I'm doing so well, I would do it again in a heart beat, but it's not for everyone. I do wish you peace as you decide what's right for you.

We'll I had the lap and several years àgo. It was not successful for me. I was hungry and never felt full. The band at times was uncomfortable. Last September I had a friend that has the sleeve and was maintaining her weight loss after a year of reaching her goal . Maintaining the weight was a big sell for me. I was a yoyo person..lośing /gaining. I researched the sleeve ..pros/ cons ..étc. I decided this was for me cause I was literally exhausted from losing and gaining weight . I was scared, nervous, and anxious to have the sleeve..but something in me said this is for me. So I am 8 Weeks out and am doing just fine. Happy with my weight loss and looking forward to reaching my goal this year. I don't get hungry much anymore, which before surgery I was always hungry. I eat cause I have to.for nutrition. At the hospital at had the surgery...they are ñot performing lapband surgery as before.'

You described your son as defiant, so I am wondering why you were apologizing to him for his grandmother? In my opinion that will just encourage her to defy her more, as if he has your approval now to do so.
I guess I don't get it. As a 13 year old boy, he should be expected do what you and she says to do, period. Especially in this situation where you have just had surgery. Just my thoughts.

We have different experiences with the sleeve surgery as far as recovery from the surgery, different paces of tolerating food the first month, etc. etc. we should respect all different views. But to actually demean, argue or get angry on a support site is totally uncalled for. It is not who knows more, who knows best.. It is our personal journey. I appreciate this website cause I witness compassion, sharing of personal struggles and triumphs, providing guidance to the newbies, etc. Tate 777, I am glad u found this website supportive. We can all be reminded that this website is not just about us..but for the good of the people who suffered most of their lives with a disease called obesity. Tate 777 welcome to bariatric pal". You've lost 65 pounds!! You should be celebrating that! Stress and negativity will get you absolutely nowhere. You need to find things to Celebrate. Did you take your measurements? If not, start now. Even when I wasn't losing, I saw a decrease in inches. As to why you haven't moved to a smaller size, the larger sizes take a lot more pounds to lose out of. For example, when I started I was in a size 20/22 pant (and squeezing into them because I didn't want to buy anything larger!). Because I was squeezing into them, I didn't change to a smaller size until I had lost 40 pounds. Now, the sizes are much closer together. I can lose 10-15 pounds and move to a smaller size. I think if you accept from the start that you are going to have stalls and whooshes (times when the pounds fall off), you'll be a lot happier that you had the surgery.
Are you seeing a therapist? I used food as a coping mechanism, as a pick-me-up when I was stressed. When I no longer had that as an option I started to feel anxious and a bit depressed. That coupled with the release of hormones that were stored in the fat that I was losing resulted in depression and anxiety. My therapist was able to help me find more healthy coping mechanisms.
I was a slow loser and felt lucky if I lost 2 pounds in a week. I figured that I didn't gain it all at once, so I wasn't going to lose it quickly. I also have Hashimotos (thyroid autoimmune disorder), which affects my metabolic rate by about 10%.
It also helps to look at the actual numbers for how you lose weight. I would guess at your weight that your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is about 1,800cal/day. If you are eating 600 calories, your deficit is 1,200 cal/day. Calculating that out for week would result in 8,400 cal deficit for the week. One pound equals 3,500 calories, so you would probably have around a 2.4 pound loss for the week. If the number is higher, that means you are losing Water weight. The first few weeks of the pre-op diet the majority of what you are losing is Water. You can go for about 3 months eating 600 calories without it affecting your metabolic rate. After that you need to start increasing your calories. That happens pretty naturally with the surgery as after 3 months you can eat a bit more.
I wouldn't factor in exercise unless you are really exceeding an hour threshold. For example, I ran 10K today, which burned around 1,200 calories. I may eat an extra 500 calories to compensate, but I probably won't see a huge loss from that.
You also need to make sure you are getting enough Protein. My minimum requirement is 60g, but I try to hit 70-80. What happens if you don't eat enough Protein is that your body will start using your lean muscle mass for fuel. That will result in fewer muscles. Muscles increase your metabolic rate, which is why you should make sure you get your protein for the day and why you should start some type of weight resistant training. That can be done at home using your body weight for resistance.
For my program I have never counted calories. The only 3 things I ever concerned myself with were protein (60g+), water (60ou+), and exercise (60min). As long as I did those three things every day I had steady losses. Stalls are frustrating, but really nothing to stress about because we all have them and there's very little you can do to stop them.
Lastly, here's a really good article on why we stall: http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.html#.Uu0i3X-9KSN It should be mandatory reading for all WLS patients!

You r not too old to start living a healthily life.. I was so scared like u. I vacillated back and forth..whether it is for me or not, After one month post op......I am not in the food the way I was before the surgery. I have to remind myself to eat for nutritional reason, not to just stuff my face like I did before., food is not on my mind all the time, I am not hungry. So if this appeals to u..go for it. I had no complications. However, u do have to be patient as u go through the eating staging. It takes time for stomach to.heal.
