1. The gym I joined recently has an infrared sauna and I was dying to use it, but hesitated because if my band. I called my Dr. who was unfamiliar with these saunas, so he couldn't recommend I use it. I was determined (just the kinda woman I am!) so I wrote to Inamed for the answer. Here is our correspondence: Me:I had an Inamed Lap Band placed on 5/14/07. I need to know if it is safe to use an infra-red sauna with your lap band. I'm dying to try the sauna and would appreciate an answer to this question. Thanks! Don Mills: Feel free to sauna away. There is nothing that I know of in a sauna that could damage your band or port. Of course it always a good idea to ask your surgeon about questionable activities. Regards, Me: Thanks very much for your prompt reply! I'm sorry to bother you again with this, but I just want to make certain you know it is an infra-red sauna, not the dry heat sort. I have no reason to think it won't be all right, but I did check with my Dr. first and since he wasn't familiar with infra-red saunas he couldn't recommend I use one. That's why I wrote to you. :-) Thanks in advance for your help. Don: Well a little longer answer is... The band is made of silicone which has a very high melting/degradation temperature, much higher that what the body could ever stand. Additionally, the band is well inside the body. Not to be facetious... But if the band were ever to be damaged by heat...that would be the very least of you problems. In other words, you would never tolerate a temperature that would be high enough to damage the band. In fact you never even come close to such a temperature. ----------- So he was not only helpful, but humorous! Anyway, I thought I'd pass along this info. I'm hoping it will help my arthritis. 2. Yes...and did you notice those were 16 ounce bottles?? Eeek!
3. Here's a great article about drinking your water: Water & 20 Tips For Getting Your 8 Glasses Daily And here is a place to calculate how much Water you need daily. It's amazing how much an overweight person should really drink! Put in your stats, then click on the "water" tab: Fit Calculator | FitSugar - Fitness, Health & Well-Being.
4. The rain is crazy! Yesterday there was 3 inches in our rain gauge and today it was another whole inch! I'm glad we aren't near a large river. However, I live in the Galloway area, and the shops down there on Lone Pine on the east side of the road could be floating away anytime now. The support groups are great! I've only been to 2 so far, but I think they are always lead by Katie the psychologist you may have seen and are very informative. Once there was a speaker then we split up into two groups, lap band and RNY then just talked about what we were going through at the moment, etc. Last night, Katie spoke about "trading one addiction for another" and it was very interesting. She always involves everyone. It can never hurt to just have some "fellowship" with others who have had the procedure. I intend to go every month. You should try it!
5. Is anyone else going to the (Dr. Edwards) New Beginnings Support Group this evening? I am! :-)
6. Thank you very much for taking the time to write this as a warning to us all. Let us know how you continue to do with your new attitude!
7. After the hellish winter (no power for 9 days), then the late freezes which put the plants back to the ground, this Spring has just been heaven! Never needing to Water is a nice bonus and a rare situation in these parts. So far I don't feel any real restriction in my eating. I have just been putting on my plate what I think is reasonable, then eating only that. I did have a small episode when I went to lunch with a friend at Cartoon's last week. I got a nice piece of salmon with rice and steamed veggies. The thing was I think I was just TOO hungry and kept forgetting to really chew chew chew and was eating too fast also. I had to excuse myself to the restroom for about 5 minutes while I burped and burped (nothing productive, thank goodness!) I was actually kind of glad it happened. I mean, I KNEW there was a band in there :-) but I just hadn't had any real evidence of it till then.
8. I am in Springfield, too and was banded by Dr. Edwards on May 14th. So far so good! I plan on going to the monthly support group held the 2nd Monday of every month. I went to one a month before surgery, then the next one was the same day I had the band placed so I missed that one! :-) Next one is coming up on the 11th.

I think Dr. Edwards is just great and most of his staff as well. My first fill will be on the 24th of this month, so I'm excited for that. I joined a new fitness place that is opening up on the 11th by the Price Cutter on E. Battlefield. It's a Contours Express which is a lot like Curves, but they have weight-resistant machines rather than hydraulic. I'm excited about that, too!

Good to see others from my area posting here. :-)
9. I know the hiccups are no fun, but it's my understanding that only excessive vomiting could cause a slip. I asked my Dr. a lot of questions about slippage and hiccups were never mentioned.
10. Will the Dr. who did the first surgery give you the second one as a "freebie" or will it all be covered by insurance no matter who does the procedure? There is an excellent Dr. (Chris Edwards) right in Springfield at St. John's who has a great reputation and has done many, many of these surgeries (he did mine). It might be worth a check. I totally understand not giving up because of your unfortunate problems the first time around. In fact, I applaud your tenacity!
11. I think I'm calculating correctly that you have had your band for 11 days, right? So you haven't lost anything in 3 days. I really, really don't want to sound mean but I have 5 words for you: step away from the scale. I don't think watching the weight too closely is going to be healthy for you at this time. You most likely haven't even started a fitness regime yet. My Dr., and just about everything I have read about this procedure, says to expect a loss of between 1 and 3 pounds a week (and that's after you are properly filled). Give yourself a little time.
12. Try this, or you may even have a store near you. This stuff looks cute to me! Avenue - Plus Size Clothing Lingerie Swimwear Women's Plus Size
13. I had the very same thing. It may have gone on to some degree for about 2 days. I figured it was just my body adjusting to everything.
14. I was banded this past Monday, the 14th, and my Dr. was surprised to find a hiatal hernia when he went in for my procedure. He just fixed that first, then placed the band slightly lower than the norm. He acted like it was no big deal and my recovery has been easier than some I have read about who had only the banding. Hope that helps. :-)
15. You (or he) should google "Cubital Tunnel" to see if that seems like the symptoms he's having. A friend of mine had it and needed surgery. She's all better now. :-)
16. Hi all. I've been posting in the May 2007 Bandsters thread and just now noticed this forum. I will be banded on the 14th! WOOT! Below is what I blogged for friends a few weeks ago. I think it will serve as introduction, but it's a bit long. Bear with me. BTW, the names are fake. I was born (yes, this may be a long entry! lol) one of a pair of twins. My twin sister, Jennifer, came out fat and sassy but I was just 4 lbs. 1 oz. and in 1954 that was very small indeed. What they now call intensive care nursery was then called the incubator. These days it costs about $2000 a day, but back then it was $5. I have the bill from the hospital Mother saved. They didn't let me go home until I was 3 weeks old. Anyway, I remained painfully thin for all my childhood and even had special Dr. visits just to consult about my weight. Now, mind that we were Christian Scientists and Dr. visits were few and far between. It was that bad, but I think a lot of it was just the stark contrast between myself and Jennifer, who remained slightly on the chubby side, and strangers continually questioning why Mother didn't feed "that one"? The truth was, I was perfectly healthy, rarely sick and I just didn't eat what at the time was "normal" food. I didn't like cooked veggies or meat of any kind and was always munching on a carrot or a banana. My favorite food was just plain cottage cheese or Peanut Butter on a spoon! chocolate milk was another favorite, but they cut me off from that when the Dr. said maybe I was filling up on that and it might be why I wouldn't eat my dinner. *rolls eyes* Fast forward (you're welcome! lol) to when I got my driver's license and stopped walking everywhere. I gained a few (needed) pounds, but to me I hated the little paunch of a stomach I could now see when I sat down in a crop top. That's when I first started thinking I was FAT. The dieting started and really all I had to do was stop eating (easy for me at the time) and I'd lose a few pounds, but soon gain it back and a couple more. This went on and on until I got pregnant at 22 and I actually DID get fat. I gained 45 pounds. My stupid Dr., now that I actually needed some help, always just said, "Well, you're a big girl". I do have a larger frame and am 5' 10" (5' 9" now) but I surely didn't need to gain that much! One word from him that it was unhealthy for the baby or myself and I'd have been all over it! Fast forward again through many, many diets, losses, gains and here I sit today at 310 lbs. The good news (yes! there is GOOD NEWS!!!) is that my dear, dear older sister, Sophie, saw an ad for a seminar on bariatric surgery (I had mentioned to her 18 mos. ago that I was considering it) and she went with me to it a week ago yesterday. Some of you may have heard of a somewhat new (in this country) procedure called the "Lap Band". It's a less invasive surgery that is totally reversible. I liked the Dr. and I am GOING FOR IT! Unfortunately, the surgery is excluded on my insurance, but it may just save my life. A bargain at any price. Tomorrow morning I go for the mandatory visit to a psychologist, then later a seminar on nutrition (I'll be totally surprised if they tell me something I don't already know) and my initial visit with Dr. Gilbert is on April 5th. EDIT: I almost forgot...the odd twist to this story is that Jennifer is now painfully thin and may have an eating disorder. Everyone says she looks older than me. She can't possibly go a day without running 5 miles and dinner for her is like a small salad and 4 boiled shrimp. Go figure. Okay, thanks for listening and I'm happy to have found this wonderful web site!
