What is it with our Mothers? Mine is that way also. I am 60 yrs old and my mother has tormented me all my life. I decided to get the lap band so I could lose weight and she could't tell me how fat I was. First I started by trying to love myself. ( They say if you love yourself, you can do anything.) Then I started to take care of myself, like it has taken me 60 years to realize that my mother only cared about herself. Don't get me wrong, she loves me, but she dosen't like me. So I have to like myself. They also say that females who are obese usually do not have a good relationship with their mothers.
Do things that make you feel good. Fix your hair and wear makeup, always put lotion on your whole body to make your skin soft. Rub your feet with lotion. Paint your finger nails and toe nails. Dress up, put on perfume Go walking every day, (that always makes me feel good). Plant some pretty flowers. Anything you like to do, do it , and tell yourself that you are beautiful and you deserve it. I hope this helps. Hang in there. Good Luck Lauracat.

Agree with posts, and actually we all have a food addiction. Addiction is something hard for any person to face no matter what the drug of chose and all of our drug happened to be food. You are correct in saying that bariatric surgery will not fix the addiction thinking of any of us, only we have the power to change our behavior and we need help to do that. You do need to seek professional help with your addiction, the band will work but you have to make it work, it is just a tool and it will allow you to eat what ever you chose to put in your body. The only person who can help you develop positive coping skills is a professional and shame on your doctor for not suggesting this unless he already has. I am sorry there is no magic answer or pill we can take for our addiction because if there was I am sure all of us would be taking it. Good luck to you, I know it took courage to ask for help, this is a positive step in the right direction.

You need to be willing to confront the deamons inside you. The band is a tool, nothing more. It is functioning as it should. You need a mental health professional to assist you and I encourage you to seek one out. Until you do get help the band is just a waste of time for you.

If you feel that you have a true food addiction, I highly recommend seeing a psychologist or counselor. It was a pre-op requirement for me, and I ended up seeing a counselor for a few more visits after my initial consult. My overeating was directly related to how I was (or actually, wasn't) dealing with a childhood trauma. I always felt like I had to be busy, so if I wasn't fidgiting with something I was eating. Really, I was just super stressed 24/7 and had to learn how to relax.
Since you still have the band, if you want to lose weight I would start over. See a psychologist, get back in touch with your surgeon and nutritionist, and try again.

Agreed. We all gained weight because of our issues. I'm sure there are few that breeze on through without struggles. We have to look at the banding as a tool and if we aren't ready to face the issues that got us there in the first place, it's going to be fruitless. As foodies, we are so used to failure. This to me is HUGE. I told myself a long time ago that if I ever got the opportunity to be covered through insurance that I would give it my all. I'm not saying that I am going to be a success story, I just know that this is my last ditch effort...I hope that you are able to get some help. I will keep you in my prayers! Much love and hugs!

I know it can be very frustrating when the scale goes up and not down. Keep in mind you had surgery less than two weeks ago! Your body will be doing some strange things just because of that alone. You have some major accomplishments already, the others will come in time.

Do you have support from a dietition? If not I can ask mine if you have any questions I can't help with. I am not that far ahead of you as per getting banded mine was March 2nd. I too was wondering what to eat and such. My dietition told me to slowly introduce new foods, eating protein first then veggies or fruits and then carbs last, I have been staying away from carbs as much as possible as they turn to sugar. She said to weigh out 3ounces of protein in a 1 cup glass measuring cup fill the rest with veggies packed full. So as per breakfast I have 1/2 a cup of oatmeal and say a half a banana and 20 mins later a cup of milk. Another time I will have a half cup of yogart and some grapes. She also said she doesn't want me to drink my protein but to eat it. Eggs are good protein I will hard boil some the night before to have on hand, I will have 2 for breakfast and a toasted flat bread, and some orange slices. Salmon is one of the highest in protein. I have small salmon wraps a lot, even egg salad. I can eat almost anything as long as I chew chew chew.. What ever you eat pick the best for example if you are wanting crackers pick the less fat out of the bunch and have less of them as before.. Hope this helps you a little bit. Take care. I hope you don't mind I add you as a friend. Always remember that your not alone. We can do this..

I was on a liquie diet two weeks before my surgery and let me tell you that was tuff. I was true to it though, but I believe I went through withdrawls. After I had my surgery it was a lot better. Just hang in there and it will get better. Its all in the brain.

I haven't had my surgery yet, but I have been going to lots of classes and the one thing that all of them have said, your band is a tool and you are going to have good days and bad. Don't give up on yourself. I was told that protein shakes are ok, that adding protein powder to things also help with the hunger. I was also told that once I am eating solids I can back off of the protein drinks and eat protein bars. Give yourself a break, you are making a difference in your life now, take it one day at a time and don't forget to drink your water!!!!!
    Good luck

Here is my story. before I had my surgry I worried about the fact that I would not be able to cheeseburgers and fries again. I cried to my husband one night and he asked me what was the matter. I thought before I told him, and admitted to myself also, I said I don't want to be fat anymore. It was then that I knew that I had to change the way I was eating, not just what I eat, but how I eat. I started before I had surgury using a baby spoon and eating from a saucer instead of a regular plate. Chewing my food and counting 30 times. There is one thing you don't want to do is have food stuck and throw it up. That will cause problems down the line. Just keep thinking you don't want to be fat.

    Dear Discouraged,
I have not been banded yet, but here is a great reference for you on UTube and search lapband 2012 so many banders experiences. Here are some pointers that I have researched. Eat with a baby spoon. Eat on a small plate. Dont eat and drink at the same time. CHEW YOUR FOOD 30 TIMES EACH BITE! Don't over eat as soon as you feel yourself full STOP EATING! Start to exercise when your wounds heal. Good luck!

This is what I eat. These are some examples oatmeal, cream of wheat, an egg w/wheat toast, or a protien smoothie. I eat somthing different every day. For lunchyou could have a tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad, lunch meat and cheese with a little mayo or a protien smoothie. Dinner is always hard for me, so I have some of the same. The protien smoothies are really good. I get the vanilla powered kind. I get any fruit I might want at the time and freeze it. when I am ready for my smoothie, I use fat free milk, protien powder and frozen fruit, put it in the blender along with some sweetner and blend it up. Yum. You might look up on the internet for a reicpe for no sugar chocolate smothies. Hope that helps, goodluck to you

Not consistently losing before your first fill is normal. I know you are so anxious to began this journey and watch the pounds melt away but unfortunately it does not happen just like that. Restriction and the band working sometimes takes several fills, you have to learn how your body responds to each fill and basically learn to eat again. Have patience and believe in your self and most and foremost do not get discouraged, this is a process and it does not happen over night. I do recommend you take measurements, so many of us lose inches when the scales do not move and this will help you stay motivated. Good luck to you.

i think if you keep digging around this site and you will see that others have experienced this as well. it seems to be pretty normal. once the swelling from surgery goes down most don't have any restriction and some people do begin to gain as the band is not serving its purpose yet because you haven't had a fill. so during this phase most commonly referred to as bandster hell you are totally left to rely on good old fashioned will power to restrict your portions. the best you can do is make better choices so if you are eating more at least its more of the good stuff...if you have been cleared to exercise begin to move a bit if you are capable and this may at least help maintain all that you have lost so far. don't fret you will be ok and your band will begin to work wonders...this is just a part of the process for some:)
