    On the Struggle Bus

Looking for some support here. I was sleeved 12/7/17, three weeks out today. These past few days I have been having the most difficult time emotionally and physically. I went back to work on the 24th, and was so fatigued; it was so busy at my job. The next night was even worse. And I'm so sick of this liquid diet. I knew what to expect going in to this but it's a lot harder to tolerate than I anticipated. I'm having my family over to dinner tomorrow, which means I've been cleaning house and planning a menu (which I can't touch!!) like mad. I'm missing food, and watching those around me eat is really bring me down! I feel like if I could just have some regular food (all I want right now is a couple slices of deli turkey and cucumber) I would feel so much better, but I can't. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

    Help. In Pain.

Hmmm. Iโ€™m not allowed beef until four months post op and my surgery was 12/2. Anyways I started soft food this week. I noticed if I eat a bit too fast, or do not chew chew chew, I get a sharp pain behind my sternum. I donโ€™t know if this is what you are experiencing or not but be mindful of the size of your bites, how fast you are eating, and make sure everything is chewed thouroughly. I likely would not try beef for awhile either. My biggest problem is slowing down. I have always been a fast eater.

    On the Struggle Bus

Three weeks out, my plan is cool with a little turkey, a little bit of potatoes, some apple sauce, etc. Cucumbers not so much...need a few more weeks for those. But turkey cut very small and chewed very well is totally ok on my plan 3 weeks post. Deli turkey is so soft, I can't imagine why you couldn't have it. (that said, you should follow your plan) If I were still on protein shakes at this point, I'd be miserable. I'm glad to be eating 1000 calories a day. I feel human again. Also have great energy to exercise....which feels pretty dang good.

    Pre Op diet disaster

I think the point of the liquid diet is to prepare you mentally for what's to come. Right now, you can cheat a little and nothing horrible will happen (unless you don't shrink your liver and your doctor decides not to do your surgery....it's happened) But here's the problem.... Immediately after surgery, you have about two to three days where you don't ingest ANY calories...just clear fluids. Then, you're on shakes and clear liquid for TWO MORE WEEKS. You'll get like 400 calories a day if you're lucky. And If you screw up and eat something AFTER surgery? You can really hurt yourself and end up needing emergency surgery for whatever you get stuck. My doctor did a talk about all the horror stories of his career....the stupid things people ate and the trouble they got into. Not good. AVOID THIS. You're just getting started. For me, it was the post surgical period where I nearly gnawed my own arm off. LOL But yeah...that MONTH of freakin starvation just sucked. It really did. Honestly....it was much harder (in my opinion) than the actual surgery. But the good news...is that you will survive it. And you'll drop quite a few pounds to soothe your misery. And you'll be eating yogurt and cream of wheat before you know it. I was on the liquid diet for Thanksgiving and cooked for my family. OMG...so hard! For Christmas, though...I get to eat finely cut up turkey and mashed potatoes. And it sounds like heaven. You all have my sympathies. Stay strong!

    Opinions to stop losing weight

I've seen a number of posts on this subject, and it often seems that family and friends are reacting to the change rather than making a legitimate assessment. Another factor may be that loose skin or some other changes make you look different/older/whatever. But a lot of people say these things become less drastic over time, so I wouldn't worry about that at all. Otherwise, you have to take into account what your doctor recommends and, ultimately and finally, the weight at which YOU feel your best.

It's an adjustment for them. I understand that its bothers you to hear "don't lose more weight" It may be out of concern or it may be a compliment. Reassure them you are healthy. It will pass with time once you are maintaining. It's hard enough for us to wrap our heads around the weight loss. Some of the comments kind of mess with your head a bit. I went to a check up at my surgeon's office. The nurse comment "if you gained 10 more I would look less skeletal" I was at goal 140 and a healthy BMI.
