I just left my doctor's office this afternoon, and I could not wait to see what that little printout had to say. I lost a total of 12.2 pounds overall. Therefore, I averaged around 3 pounds per week. These are my numbers compared to my last adjustment on 1-18-2011:
1-18-2011 / 2-24-2011
BMI: 37.3 BMI: 35.7
Fat mass: 129 Fat mass: 106.21
weight: 282.61 weight: 270.41
I don't want to lose water weight. I want to lose body fat and gain muscles throughout this entire process. Nothing makes me happier than to see these numbers. It lets me know all of my hard work is not in vain and the fat is being replaced with muscles. God is so good to me and this is a long time dream becoming a reality to get off this weight and to keep it off. It's slow but it's coming off!
I thought I'd be feeling so much better by now! I feel like a punching bag! I have been walking but suffer from nausea and dizziness.
If the feeling of my internal organs falling out weren't enough, I get my period! Great! I am miserable in ways you could not imagine.
Hoping the days to come are better!
I JUST RECEIVED A TIP THAT IF YOU ADD PROTEIN TO YOUR MEALS YOU WILL INDEED LOSE MORE WT. AND FEEL FULLER! NOW THIS CAN MEAN ADDING 1/2 SCOOP OF PROTEIN POWDER TO YOUR MEALS SUCH AS DRINKS, SOUPS, OR FOOD, OR SPRINKLING LOW FAT SHREDDED CHEESE ON YOUR EGGS OR SALADS OR FISH OR CHICKEN, OR SPRINKLING SEEDS OR NUTS (CRUSHED) ON YOUR FOODS, TRY TO EAT ONLY POULTRY (CHICKEN) SEAFOOD, FISH OF ALL KINDS, SHRIMP, CANNED TUNA, SALMON AND AVOID PORK AND BEEF. THE MORE PROTEIN YOU EAT THE FULLER YOU WILL FEEL AND THE LESS YOU WILL EAT!!!! USE OLIVE OIL AND AVOID ALL TRANS FATS. (READ A LINK ALSO THAT SAYS USING TRANS FATS CAUSES DEPRESSION - A LARGE STUDY WAS DONE ON THIS). EAT LOTS OF EGGS WHETHER THEY ARE BOILED, SCRAMBLED OR WHATEVER. TRY STARTING OUT YOUR MEAL WITH A CUP OF SOUP FIRST, AS IT GIVES YOUR LAPBAND A JUMPSTART AND KINDA REVITALIZES YOU. THEN PROCEED WITH YOUR MEAL. YOU WILL EAT LESS. ALSO - WHEN YOUR BAND GIVES YOU THAT "WARNING" - KINDA LIKE OK YOU ATE ENOUGH FEELING ( A LITTLE BIT OF DISCOMFORT OR REGURGITATION) THEN STOP EATING!!!!! WELL - I FOR ONE - WILL HEED THIS TIP AND SEE IF IT WORKS FOR ME! GOOD LUCK FELLOW BANDERS!!!!
Wow...wow, wow, wow. I still just cannot believe it. I have been reading so many posts on here and just keep getting more and more excited. I have been hoping for this for so long and to think it's going to happen in less then 3 weeks is just....shocking. My husband was so adorable when I told him. He knew how much this means for me, I got very emotional, but I did not except him to get so emotional also. It was so moving because he is not normally like that, so it really showed how much he really supports me. I don't see it most the time and it was like a giant flashing sign that knock me to the core to see him so happy for me for something that makes him so nervous. I am just so excited for this part of my life to really start. I have two beautiful kids that I am so excited to finally have pictures with them, and vacations, and park days, all while being a normal weight. It means so much for my life because I feel so blessed and am so thankful for all I have, but feel so distraught over this one thing, and now I feel like this one thing, this fat, has been keeping me from so much more. Alright, enough gloating, I still have a long ways to go and I am afraid to be to optimistic about the end results just yet. Hope this day is finding all you Sleeved and soon to be Sleeved friends very well!!
Going in tomorrow morning FINALLY! Nervous, excited, and HAPPY to get on with it.
Not looking forward to all that is uncomfortable and scarey but this chicka ain't scared o' nuthin' so bring it on Docs Lets roll!!! ( talkin' trash and laughin' hard and happy! )
Just a quick note to let everyone know I'm doing OK. My Mother passed away suddenly on Jan. 6, 2011 from Pneumonia (She didn't realize how sick she was) She was in Carson City on vacation. Our family is still dealing with the shock, but trying to moved forward...trying to deal with her Estate has proven to be very difficult. My advice, if you have a Will in place...switch everything over to a Living Trust. It was the first thing I did after arriving home. During our grieving we got some great news that just proves to me that LIFE goes forward. Our grandbaby is a GIRL...and her name will be Keira Ann (Ann is after my Mom). Count your blessing and hug your loved ones, always let your family know how much you love them...because God has his agenda and you never know how much time you have.
Today I am scheduled to have another adjustment at 430pm. I have put off getting another adjustment for several reasons. I am really not sure first of all if I really need another adjustment. I have a difficult time as it is getting certain foods down. I rarely eat fruits like apples/oranges etc, because they always give me a stuck feeling which I hate more than anything. I love to eat all types of fruits and I really miss not having them in my diet. Therefore, I have started juicing to get my fruits into my daily diet within the last couple of weeks. I had a really nice Jack Lalnane power juicer a couple of years ago, but I had a house fire and it was never replaced. My mother is a gadget queen and she purchased a juiceman 2 yrs back which she stopped using once the thrill was gone. Therefore, she pasted her juicer on to me a couple of weeks ago and now I am able to enjoy all my fruits and raw veggies. I juice in the afternoon which give me a late day burst of energy which I really need after a long day. Last night I juiced (2) small apples, (4) carrots, (1) large orange, and (1) grapefruit that really got my digestive system moving. I felt so good this morning once I got up and moving.
Now when I find it difficult to digest certain foods I juice as my alternative to getting nutritional foods. I know this does not work for everyone, but it really gives me an incredible feeling of being full and it's good for my body. I do not drink things that don't taste good to me. I am learning that foods are to be enjoyed and I now only eat those things that I really enjoy eating. I am always searching the net for new and tasty juice recipes. If anyone has any I would really enjoy you sharing them with me!
Back to my fill- I really think another adjustment will boost my weight lost, but I dare don't want to be too tight like I have been in the past. I want my doctor to be very conservative today with my fill. I think just a little will put everything into motion. More than anything I am very excited to know what my fat mass is going to be today. My last fill was on 1-18-2011 and my fat mass was 129. I am so excited to find out what it will be today when I weigh in at the office.
Lately, so many people have been coming up to me complimenting me on my weight lost and asking how I've lost so much weight. My response is a very honest one (portion control and being more active)! I've learned not to mention my band any more because it leads into too many questions that I am tired of answering. I really don't see what they do, but I do thank God Change is taking place in my body.
It's been 19-20 days since I've really lost any weight. I'm still averaging about 900-1200 cals a day. I'm still working out 4-6 times a week. I'm still drinking lots of water. It SUCKS! I've tried tripping up my metabolism here and there with taking in some extra calories, and I've bumped up my exercise. I think my body is just fighting me. I know I'll get past this but I keep finding myself becoming more negative about it every day. I just hope that someday soon I pop out of this plateau and get to losing again. I've been averaging about 10-12 lbs a mo since I was banded and this mo so far I've lost 3 and I don't have much time left.
I'm super sad faced!
Don't get me wrong if your average is half a pound to 1 pound a week there is nothing wrong with that. I just know how hard I work and what results I normally get from it and I'm just GRRRR about it right now! Crossing my fingers and hoping for a 180 soon.
So I have another doctor's appointment today. My guess is they will give me a .5cc fill and I hope it helps. Last time the doctor wanted to give me 1.5cc but when I drank the water afterwards it came back up so they took out .5cc. Hopefully the fill works becuase I cannot seem to break through this plateau. I go up, I go down, I'm exercising non stop but I'm still not losing like I thought I would so we shall see what he says today...wish me luck.
So I got up at 4am this morning ready to do my Leslie Sanson walk away the pounds DVD (Walk and Kick). Now I haven’t been weighed since I got the pre-op diet from the nutritionist on 02/10 and on that day I was at 276.2lbs. I got the scale from the laundry room praying it didn’t say 276.2 after all I have been following the pre-op diet to the “T” not cheating at all. To my surprise the scale read 268lbs. This is such a great feeling. I know eight pounds is not a lot but for me this is big. This means that I have stuck with something and whatever I’m doing is working. I wanted to share this with you guys because you have been such great supporters since I started my journey. Good Luck to you all!!!
Hash browns
Substitute: Squash for potatoes
Summer squash (the football-shaped yellow kind) tastes similar to potatoes when cooked—but has just a fraction of the carbs. Grate the squash, mix in an egg as binder, make patties, and fry them in olive oil, says Mary Dan Eades, M.D., co-author of The Low-Carb Comfort Food Cookbook.
Carbs eliminated: About 15 grams (g) per hash-brown patty
The taste: "Not as firm and crispy as regular hash browns, but the potato flavor is there."
Mashed potatoes
Substitute: Cauliflower for potatoes
One of Dr. Agatston's favorites: Steam some fresh or frozen cauliflower in the microwave. Then spray the cauliflower with butter substitute, add a little nonfat half-and-half substitute, and puree in a food processor or blender. "Salt and pepper to taste and you've got something that quite honestly can compete with the real thing any day," says Dr. Agatston. To make it even better, try adding roasted garlic, cheese, or sour cream to the mixture.
Carbs eliminated: 30 g per cup
The taste: "After a couple of bites, you forget it's not potatoes."
Lasagna
Substitute: Zucchini slices for noodles
Slice four to five medium-size zukes lengthwise into 3/4-inch-thick strips, instructs Lise Battaglia, a New Jersey chef whose past clients include Jon Bon Jovi. Sprinkle Italian seasoning on the strips, place them in a single layer on a nonstick cookie sheet, and bake at 425 degrees F for 20 minutes. You want them firm, not crisp. "Then simply make the lasagna as you normally would, replacing lasagna noodles with the baked zucchini," she says.
Carbs eliminated: 36 g per serving
The taste: "Delicious. The zucchini provides texture that you don't get from noodles alone."
Spaghetti
Substitute: Spaghetti squash for spaghetti
A cooked spaghetti squash is like Mother Nature's automatic spaghetti maker — the flesh becomes noodle-like strands. "All you have to do is cut the squash in half and remove the seeds. Then place each half — cut side down — on a plate with a quarter cup of water," says Elizabeth Perreault, a chef at Colorado's Culinary School of the Rockies. Nuke the squash for 10 minutes or until it's soft to the touch. Let it cool, then scrape out the "spaghetti" strands and top with pasta sauce and cheese.
Carbs eliminated: 30 g per cup
The taste: "Great. Spaghetti squash has exactly the same consistency as real pasta."
Pancakes
Substitute: Oatmeal and cottage cheese for pancake mix
Here's a can't-fail recipe from The South Beach Diet. Mix together half a cup of old-fashioned oatmeal, a quarter cup of low-fat cottage cheese, two eggs, and a dash each of vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Process in a blender until smooth. Cook the mixture like a regular pancake.
Carbs eliminated: 45 g per pancake
The taste: "With syrup, you could never tell the difference."
Scalloped potatoes
Substitute: Tempeh for potatoes
You may think you don't like soy-based foods, but that could be because you don't cook them right, says Beckette Williams, R.D., a San Diego-based personal chef. "Tempeh can be really bland, but if you jazz it up with herbs and spices, it's a great substitute for potatoes." Her recommendation: Saute a couple of cups of thinly diced tempeh with garlic and onions. Then pour a cheese sauce (sharper is better) over the tempeh cubes and bake for half an hour.
Carbs eliminated: 11 g per cup
The taste: "Just like a slightly nutty baked potato."
Macaroni and Cheese
Substitute: Diced vegetables for macaroni
Even instant mac and cheese can go lower-carb; use only half the pasta in the box and bulk it up with a couple of cups of frozen mixed vegetables, says Sandra Woodruff, R.D., co-author of The Good Carb Cookbook.
Carbs eliminated: 13 g per cup
The taste: "I hate broccoli, but I wouldn't mind eating this."
Pasta salad
Substitute: Mixed vegetables or black beans for half the pasta
Same idea as the mac and cheese, but try black beans, diced tomatoes, and chunks of ham, tuna, chicken, or hard-boiled eggs, suggests Richard Ruben, an instructor at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. "These kinds of salads are a blank slate, so you can top them with anything from a creamy blue-cheese dressing to vinaigrette, or even lime juice and slices of avocado," Ruben says.
Carbs eliminated: 10 g per cup
The taste: "Awesome. I don't miss the extra pasta at all."
Cheese-flavored chips
Substitute: Low-fat string cheese for chips
Just crazy enough to work: Cut sticks of string cheese into quarter-inch-thick slices and scatter the rounds on a cookie sheet coated with nonstick spray, leaving them an inch or two apart. Bake at 375 degrees F for 4 to 5 minutes or until the cheese melts and turns golden brown. Let them cool, then peel the chips off the tray.
Carbs eliminated: Up to 90 g per serving
The taste: "Like the cheese you pull off the top of a pizza."
Pizza
Substitute: Portobello mushrooms for pizza crust
Cut the gills out of the inside of the mushroom, says Ruben, "then place the mushroom on an oiled cookie sheet and bake for 5 to 10 minutes so it dries out slightly." Add tomato sauce, mozzarella, and pepperoni or other toppings and broil until the cheese begins to melt.
Carbs eliminated: About 20 g per slice
The taste: "Like pizza, but moister. Give me a fork!"
Beef-a-Roni
Substitute: Eggplant for pasta
Mixing diced eggplant with ground beef is healthier and more highbrow than this old skillet special — call it moussaka American style. You have to soften the eggplant first, says Williams. Cut it in half, brush it with olive oil, and then broil for 10 to 20 minutes. "Let it cool, dice it up, and mix with hamburger, tomato sauce, and spices," she says.
Carbs eliminated: 26 g per cup
The taste: "Exactly like Hamburger Helper, in a good way."
Sandwiches
Substitute: Napa or Chinese cabbage for bread
Slap your turkey and Swiss onto a leaf of cabbage and roll it up. "I've made some great-tasting BLTs using cabbage instead of bread," Battaglia says. Dip the roll in low-fat mayonnaise or mustard.
Carbs eliminated: 29 g per sandwich
The taste: "Better than eating plain cold cuts."

Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV has been around for a long time yet many doctors do not prescribe it for ailments that it is perfectly capable of treating.
* * *
This wonder food is said to help with weight loss, acne, acid reflux, cholesterol, constipation and heartburn among others.
Apple cider vinegar, also called just cider vinegar, is produced from cider or apple must (crushed and aged apples). The unfiltered product is a kind of brownish to yellow color, the unfiltered cider contains the "mother of vinegar", this is the part that has the most health benefits.
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is a natural bacteria fighter that contains minerals and trace elements such as magnesium, phosphorous, chlorine, sodium, sulfur, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, silicon and fluorine.
This wonder food is said to help with weight loss, acne, acid reflux, cholesterol, constipation and heartburn among others. it is also said to work wonders for your overall health and can even help fight diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer, memory problems and aging.
Apple cider vinegar will also act as a blood thinner which aids in the prevention of high blood pressure (blood pressure chart).
Vinegar has been used to cure and prevent a variety of ailments for centuries. As early as the time of Hippocrates, considered by many to be the father of medicine, vinegar was used to treat patients.
During the Civil War, it was used as an antiseptic. What makes it so special and why should you use it?
Apples are one of the most nutritious, health-giving foods available, containing a host of vitamins and minerals like pectin, beta-carotene, calcium, iron, phosphorous and potassium in addition to enzymes and amino acids. Apples are the main ingredient in apple cider vinegar.
Apple cider vinegar detoxifies and purifies various organs in the body. As a purifier, it breaks down fatty, mucous and phlegm deposits within the body. By breaking down these substances, it improves the health and function of organs such as the kidneys, bladder, and liver.
It oxidizes the blood, reducing the risk of high blood pressure, and neutralizes any toxic substance or harmful bacteria that enters the body by ingesting certain foods. Apple cider vinegar promotes healthy digestion, assimilation and elimination.
Research has proven that apple cider vinegar can assist in strengthening the heart, stabilizing blood sugar and reducing the risk of certain cancers. It flushes harmful toxins from your body and assists in weight control.
Try drinking two to six teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with water every day. It can also be used in cooking or sprinkled on salads, vegetables, etc. You can drink it as a hot or cold beverage and sweeten it with honey.
You might wonder, if Apple Cider Vinegar is so great, why hasn't your doctor told you about it?
I think the simple reason might be that medical doctors are more apt to prescribe medicines than natural remedies.
Pharmaceutical companies spend a lot of money getting their medicines and pills approved and they certainly wouldn't want you using the inexpensive, unpatentable alternative of ACV instead of buying their expensive cures and treatments.
One big problems today that many people suffer from is acid reflux. Consequently, pharmaceutical companies have come up with a plethora of pills to treat this ailment. But before you take pills that may be harmful to you, you might want to consider treating your acid reflux or other stomach ailments with apple cider vinegar.
You see, your stomach needs acid to digest food and when you have digestive problems like acid reflux or heartburn it's not because you have too much acid it's because there is too little. Most medications you would take for these are antacids which diminish the amount of acid in your stomach but this may not be what you need. These antacids may treat the symptoms but they will not address the cause and therefore, will never cure your problem.
Apple cider vinegar will mimic the acid level of your stomach and help you digest food properly which can help to treat that burning sensation. In addition, you might also consider taking digestive enzymes that will help your stomach digest the food.
If you suffer from acid reflux, heartburn or nausea, try taking one tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar prior to each meal. You may see your symptoms go away in as little as three days. However, you'll want to continue this practice for three to nine months and you may see the problem disappear altogether.
You don't want to use just any kind of ACV, though. What you need is organic apple cider vinegar that still has the enzymes in it (called the "mother"). This is where the healing properties are. The "mother" will show up inside the bottle as stringy globs floating around. To get the most out of your vinegar, shake it up each time you take a swig so that the mother can be dispersed throughout.
What's that you say? It tastes terrible?
Certainly most people do not take to the taste of ACV right away but it can be somewhat of an acquired taste and I know many people (including myself) that slug down a tablespoonful of the stuff all by itself. If you can't stomach this, space however, there are some things you can do to make it a little bit more palatable.
Apple cider vinegar can be taken in many various ways including in salad dressings, making mayonnaise, or sprinkled on chips and fries. It also can be sweetened with natural honey to make it taste better, a method often used in India where physicians will often prescribe apple cider vinegar with Gotu Kola (a herb) to help in the revitalizing of the skin.
You might try making a tea out of your Apple cider vinegar by heating a couple of water and then adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to that.
While it's best to take ACV before each meal, you can also take it anytime your stomach feels a little upset and it will have immediately curative effects. Some people swear by it, and drink it for everything including the onset of cold and flu. Apple Cider Vinegar is also a cure for bad breath or halitosis due to its acidity.
An additional benefit is that many people who have taken apple cider vinegar before each meal have seen a moderate weight loss as well. Some theories for the weight loss benefits of apple cider vinegar suggest that ACV may help to speed up the bodies metabolism.
Medicinal uses of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
Honestly, natural apple cider vinegar is one of nature's own, true miracle health elixirs. The long history of its use demonstrates, rather clearly, that using vinegar was once highly revered as a practical medical application long before Johnny Appleseed graced North America by planting apple trees.
The healing powers of vinegar has been traced back as far as 3000 BC, Hippocrates, Babylonia, and to 15th century England as a means to ward off dangerous and infectious diseases, to keep one's general health fit and strong, and used as a simple antiseptic/disinfectant.
When deciding to use ACV for medicinal purposes, be sure to select only a raw, non-distilled vinegar. You may be able to find this type of vinegar in your regular grocery store. But more likely than not, you will probably need to look for it at a local health food store.
Clear distilled vinegar is easy to find in any food store and is relatively inexpensive. This type of vinegar is great for regular household cleaning chores, but it is not so wonderful for your internal health. Non-distilled vinegars are definitely going to be more expensive and nutritionally potent than the distilled varieties, but isn't your health worth the price difference? Plus, you are going to have the satisfaction of knowing that you have chosen the right mixture that will work hard to enhance your health.
Most commercial brands (whether white or brown) have been pasteurized, filtered, and refined or distilled in order to make the final product look more attractive to please the consumer. The manufacturers are only giving the consumer what they apparently seem to want. Unfortunately, unbeknown to the average consumer, this extra processing actually destroys much of the natural health restorative properties of the end product.
Look for ACVs that have been cold pressed and made from whole, organically grown apples, with no added chemical preservatives, and in which the 'mother' of vinegar liquid has been retained. This 'mother' substance, as it is lovingly known, is the gelatinous liqueur that is naturally formed during the final fermentation process.
This milky, cloudy, and stringy looking stuff at the bottom of the container is what contains the healthiest part of the mixture. It also lets you know that the important vitamins and minerals, enzymes, and naturally occurring good bacteria have not been compromised due to over processing, filtration, or excessive heating. Before consuming, shake the the bottle gently to thoroughly distribute all of the nutrients, pour, and serve.
An energy boosting way to drink ACV, without it taking your breath away, is to mix about 2 teaspoons with an equal amount of raw honey in a small glass of warm water. Stir to dissolve the honey and drink one to three times a day. You can sip on this drink during a meal for extra digestive power, or you can drink this ahead of a meal. Refrain from drinking to much water or any other beverage during your meal, and for up to an hour afterward. Give your gastric stomach juices enough time to fully break down the food you just ate, on its own, without weakening their effects with added liquids.
Why use apple cider vinegar?
Because, when it is used medicinally it helps the body rid itself of harmful toxins, has wonderful disinfecting properties as a natural bad germ fighter, and is a very biodegradable substance that does not pollute the environment.
With regular and continued use, this wonderful liquid helps restore and balance the body's pH, taking it from acidic to neutral in a short amount of time. Normally, it would be hard to believe that such an acidic substance could normalize, or lower our pH so easily. As far as I know, this only applies to vinegar, as our digestive system will naturally convert it to an alkaline based substance.
An acidic internal system is directly caused from eating excessive amounts of meat, grains, and sugar by eating and drinking too many processed foods and beverages. This will provide an invitation, internally, for unwanted illness or disease to set up house. Otherwise, a neutral or more alkaline system will promote an enhanced emotional and physical health state.
Raw, ACV contains over 40 different naturally occurring substances from vitamins and minerals, to enzymes and beneficial bacteria. It has been used for generations to treat a variety of different human health conditions such as,
arthritis
high blood pressure
all types of skin problems
chronic fatigue and insomnia
heartburn and other digestive abnormalities
high cholesterol
maintaining normal body weight
This is not exhaustive list, by far, of common health maladies that ACV has been known to eliminate. As with any new diet addition, your expectations may be too high in the healing effects of vinegar. Keep in mind that it is not to be considered a panacea for all ill health evils.
Although many individuals have achieved a more improved physical state by using vinegar, without modifying their daily dietary habits, serious diet modifications need to be considered in some hard-core cases. Doing so would further enhance a partial response when combined with a healthier diet.
This is, especially, a key factor when using vinegar for serious weight loss. You simply must reduce or eliminate your consumption of over processed foods, eat more raw plant foods, eat smaller meals more often, and step up your effort in getting regular and moderate physical exertion. These strategies combined with ACV will take you a long way in seeing the results you are hoping for, and quicker. It is possible to lose up to one to three pounds a week.
Remember too...that diet modifications include increasing daily liquid intake. Apple cider vinegar works best when adequate liquids are supplied to help carry out the toxins we ingest and are exposed to every day.
Not just any liquids, but read this to mean WATER exclusively. Start reducing the amounts of other beverages you may be drinking instead, such as soft drinks, coffee, tea, fruit juices, and alcohol. Moderation, in occasionally consuming these, is absolutely crucial in maintaining a healthy body weight (even if your underweight), or if you are trying to lose weight.
When used as a flavor seasoning, or drinking as a healthy tonic, ACV could have your current health issue becoming a thing of the past. As with any type of natural or conventional health treatment, be realistic. Expect a reasonable amount of time for vinegar to take affect. This may be only a few days, a week, or it could be longer. If you are really committed to giving it a real chance, you may look forward to a much different health reality sooner than you think.

The government has just released the latest edition in the Nutritional Recommendations series. The nutritional guidelines are released every 5 years, and consist of some things which should be cut from and included to the American diet, according to medical and nutritional experts. The publication rarely has much of an impact. Nobody should have to take out a cash advance to change their diet with the new guidelines. Article resource - New dietary guidelines published by federal government by MoneyBlogNewz.
Brand new nutritional guidelines what the government published
ABC accounts that new “Dietary Guidelines” were released by the federal government recently. A brand new model of recommendations is issued every 5 years by the United States DOA and the Department of Health and Human Services. When it comes to the 2010 Nutritional Recommendations for Americas, solid fats have to be limited. Also, high dietary fiber fruits and vegetables are suggested while the serving has been changed to be 2 and half cup a day of them. The sodium intake needs to be less than 2,300 milligrams a day of sodium for Americans in accordance with recommendations. The American Heart Association says that about half of Americans are at risk for heart disease. Anyone with this risk should limit the sodium intake to 1,500 mg a day.
Recommending more seafood to eat
The brand new dietary recommendations also recommend that Americans start eating more fish. Currently, 3.5 ounces a week of seafood is recommended. USA Today explains the news number is twice that with 8 ounces a week recommended. There are a lot of Omega 3 fatty acids in seafood and seafood. This makes risk for heart attacks and strokes go down. You will find more saturated fats in France than in The United States being consumed with less heart disease. This is known as the “French Paradox” or “French Affect” that happened with the higher consumption.
Weight problems issues
In America, the rate of weight problems in adults and children is really high and going up. It is something that worries health professionals and First Lady Michele Obama. The life expectancy in The United States isn’t as great as it is in other countries. This is largely as a result of diet that Americans have

Risk of depression increased with the consumption of trans fats during the course of a recently published study. However individuals in the study eating a Mediterranean diet were less likely to be depressed. In the U.S., where individuals eat far more trans fats than Europeans, the connection to depression may be more firmly established. Source for this article - Trans fats increased risk of depression in six-year diet study by MoneyBlogNewz.
Link between depression and trans fats
A research done at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain did a study that found out people who had trans fat were 48 percent more likely to suffer from depression. The depression danger increased depending on how much trans fats was in the diet. It was higher if more than 0.6 percent of calories came from it. Over 12,000 individuals over 6 years were tracked to figure out what conclusions could possibly be made. None of the participants suffered from depression at the beginning of the research. Depression was greater for those who got more trans fat at the beginning of the study than those who got less.
Swelling trans fats trigger
The trans fat/depression research began with questionnaires on diet and medical conditions, which were administered again when the study concluded. Not only was trans fat intake linked to depression, higher levels of trans fat consumption led to a higher risk of depression. Depression was uncommon in those who had a Mediterranean diet. Inflammation is common among those with depression. This led the study director to suggest this has a connection with depression also. Trans fats increase swelling, a danger factor for heart disease, as well as lower HDL (good) cholesterol and raise LDL (bad) cholesterol. Mediterranean diets have olive oil used in them a lot. It helps reduce inflammation very much.
Just how much trans fat is taken in, while in The United States?
The study done by the Spanish might wake some Americans up. It can help explain what is going on. The Spanish subjects in the research eating the highest levels of trans fat averaged 0.4 percent of total calories from trans fat, mostly in the form of milk and cheese. The diet in The United States averages 2.5 percent of calories from trans fat. Processed foods help make this huge difference. The United States leads the world in the consumption of trans fats and cases of depression, also as heart disease.

Well, not really from the beginning because that would take us back to about 12 years old. I have wanted to have WLS for years and have never been able to afford it. Since starting with my current employer (2/1/10) I learned that our insurance policy will cover it. One of the requirements is to be employed for one year, so here I am a year later starting my journey. I used last year to fulfill my 6 month w/ PCP requirement so that I would be all set on 2/1/11. I am going to keep up with a timeline on this blog and try to track my entire process.
I am not announcing it to the world, but I am being honest if someone asks me about surgery. I hope to be able to help others through transparency in my process.
I can honestly say that so far, my dietition consult has been the most enlightening and helpful. While we did talk about food and nutrition, she actually did a great job of making me think about some of the emotional pieces of this puzzle. I have come to realize that I am ready to do this for ME. I need to be able to put myself first for a change so that I can be the fit wife/mother that I am in my heart. I have lots of dreams of jogging on the bike trail with my kids, running a 5k, fitting in the swings at the amusement park (not being afraid to take that Disney trip out of fear of not fitting in the seats), having pool parties in my back yard and actually getting IN the pool, etc.
My main fears with the surgery revolve around whether or not it will be sucessful and a fear that I won't be able to keep the weight off. I know this is because of the lifetime of yo-yo dieting, but I'm just trying to be honest with myself. I am concerned (not really a fear, but concerned) about not being able to drink with meals and drinking liquids in general. After my surgery consultation, I realized very quickly that I am a "gulper". Never really thought about it before, but am very aware of it now.
I know that this is going to be a very difficult transition and I hope that my friends and family will see the work that it takes and realize that it is not the "easy way out". I want this tool for the better chances of long term success. While I am VERY nervous...I am mainly excited and so ready to start seeing results. I'm hopeful that with a 3/28 surgery date that I will see some good "summer" results. Bring on swimsuit season.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog. This is my first attempt at this so please be patient as I figure this thing out. It may be helpful to understand a bit of my history to understand some of the things that I write and emotions that I express. I have been a large person all of my life. I have lost over 100 lbs on 3 separate occasions. The bad side to that is that each time after the loss I gained an equal amount or more back. After examining my options and realizing that I needed some help I concluded that my best chance of living a longer healthier life was to pursue a surgical weight loss procedure. This is my story of how I began my journey to become less than half the man I've been.
On October 13, 2010 after the emergence of some joint pain and being tired of being tired all the time, I consulted with my family nurse practitioner (NP) to see if she had any suggestions. I had long known of the surgical weight loss options and had encountered several people who were successful with the process. I had considered it, but really always viewed it as cheating or taking the "easy" way out. I held the opinion that admitting the need for surgery was a sign of weakness and that I should be able to be strong enough to get the weight off on my own. I understood why others had gone through with the surgery, but I was different, I could do it on my own. Not to mention if I admitted to needing the surgery, I would be admitting that I was a failure and would have to face the shame of allowing myself to get to the point where surgical intervention was my only option. My beliefs and opinions met with some harsh reality on that fateful day when I met with my NP. She was very eloquent and concerned as she pointed some facts out to me. I was just about to turn 39, had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and high cholesterol, my blood pressure and blood sugar levels were both at the high ends of normal. She pointed out that thus far I had not had the more serious health issues...but they were unquestionably in my future if I did not get the weight off and keep it off. I gave her my prepped statements that I had lost before and I could do it again. I just needed to be focused and dedicated. She swiftly countered my statements with one simple question, "You've not been able to keep it off for the first 39 years, what are you going to do different to keep it off for the next 39?" Well she had me, and I was there after-all, to get her suggestion. Her suggestion was look into it, find out the details and be informed. Well how hard can that be? I can at least inform myself, that's fair. My NP made a recommendation for me to check with Grand Health Partners (GHP) and specifically Dr. Randy Baker. She gave me the contact information and the insurance paperwork to take with me in the event I decided it was something I wanted to do.
This, I believe, is where God had took over. I took the contact information and called after I left the office. I found out that the first step in the process with GHP was to attend an orientation. Now here's the God intervention part, they had an orientation meeting the very next day. Why do I say God stepped in? Well if I would have had to wait a week or so to attend that first meeting, I think my chances of actually going would have been diminished. I really believe I would have talked myself out of it and would have tried to do it on my own again. I attended the meeting and heard about the different procedures. I saw the testimonials and heard how people's lives had truly been changed by the surgical weight loss process. I learned how GHP approached the treatment of the patient not only surgically but completely. Each patient would be treated by a nutritionist, behaviorist, and exercise physiologist in addition to the staff doctors, physician assistants and of coarse the surgeon. They really looked to take care of all aspects of the weight loss journey. I left the orientation excited and for the first time in recent memory optimistic about my ability to have a healthy life moving forward. I filed the required insurance papers with my NP and began setting up the series of appointments required in the process.
The days from that orientation to now as I write this have been a blur. I began meeting with doctors, having a cardiac stress test, getting blood drawn for lab work, talking to dietitians and getting started on pre-operation diets. The surgeon and I decided that the best procedure for me would be a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. The short story on the "sleeve" is that it is the physical removal of 85% of ones stomach. It leaves a stomach with the volume of approximately 3.5 ounces, a bit less than a half of a cup. I had done all the insurance and surgical center requirements and was ready to more forward. Then on approximately December 16th, 2010 I received the call from Dr. Bakers scheduler, I had received final insurance approval for surgery and we scheduled the surgery for Jan 10, 2011.
As I write this I am now 6 weeks post surgery and it is the best decision I have ever made. I have more energy and feel so much better than I would have ever imagined. I'm fortunate that I have had no complications and really no difficulty to speak of. Would I still think of the surgery as cheating or the "easy" way out? No. The surgery on it's own will only get one so far. It still takes dedication to the diet and exercise programs and, for me, a complete change in my approach to food. There is a huge adjustment in how one eats and drinks. My meals now consist of approximately 4oz of food per meal. Gone are the days of the 23oz prime rib. I don't consider it cheating, I consider it a tool to help me get healthier and increase my chances of prolonging my life. By no means has this process been easy. It is a total and complete life changing experience. Oh and the less than half the man thing....once I get to my goal I will weight 46% of what I did on that Oct 13th day.
As I write this I have lost 36lbs on my pre-surgery diet and 52lbs since having my surgery for a total of 88lbs lost since my initial consultation with the surgery center on November 23, 2010.
Again, thank you for taking the time to read my blog.

Today I bought bio oil, palmers coco butter (for after pregnancy and weight loss) and a body scrubbing brush. I know these products aren't a tummy tuck/body lift in a bottle, but even if they don't reduce scars/stretch marks or firm my skin up at least i'll have really soft, even toned skin. I don't think i'm going to have that big of a problem with excess skin but you never know. All of my excess weight is pretty evenly spread out over my body, no bulging belly or backside. In other news I've had a headache since 3pm. I took a tylenol but without an advil (which I can't take) there's not much hope. Hopefully it won't last too much longer.
Hi everyone! I haven't been out here in a while, but I hope everyone is doing well. I have my FOURTH 5K coming up on Saturday! Not bad for a girl who couldn't run a half of a mile this time last year. A year out and well over halfway to my goal. Life is good!
I have a blogspot blog, if you have any interest...come take a look. I love visitors!!
