2nd fill and a horrible experience

Recommended Posts

Today I went for my 2nd fill since surgery and I was in tears by the time it was over.

My first fill caused me to get very sick to my stomach and I don't know if it was from the solution I had to drink or if it was nerves because he had difficulty hitting my port. I really can't figure out why such a problem because I am under an exray machine.

Today, I was nervous about being sick of my stomach but that was the least of my problems. It was his assistant doing the procedure and she first stuck me and the needle was to short, so inserted a longer needle which required a second stick. This was painful but she didn't hit center of the port and restuck me again. After the third attempt I asked did she get it and was going to have to be stuck again. I felt the emotions taking over and started to cry because this was very painful. My doctor took over and after the fourth try he got it in.

He was very upset that I was upset but I really dread having these fills because I've had a horrible two experiences.

I have been in a lot of pain today and am very sore. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't know what to do:confused:

That's crap. Doesn't sound like either of them are very good at it - how much experience do they have? I have been for a number of fills and with one exception the person has always got the port on the first try. No xray, nothing weird to drink, no numbing and just minor discomfort.

Sorry you had to go through this.

I agree with you. I never heard of that kind of incompetence before. It must be horrible. I dont drink anything, get no x-rays and feel a pinch, thats all. I think she should find a new doctor to do the fills.

What kind of doctor are you going to? Its time to change to someone who knows what they are doing. That is not how a fill is supposed to go. I lie down, my doc or PA feels for my port, has me do a little situp, inserts the needls, I feel a little pinch, hel fills me, and there is a little pressure when pulling out the needle. Its not traumatic or painful. Yours shouldnt be either. Find a new doc. Good luck!:w00t:

I am sorry you had a bad experience today...I did too! :w00t:(

Both my PA and I discovered a couple things....my port is deep and I make scar tissue quickly. So scar tissue covers my port and it makes it painful to get fills. So once she numbed me a bit deeper it went much better. Still a little rough.

I hate fills...seriously! This was my fifth one and the only one that wasn't pretty rough was the first one and I know it isn't the PA because I have seen a couple of them but it is just the way my body heals over it. I hope it doesn't cause problem long term.

If I were you, I would asked to be numbed first. It makes the whole thing much less painful if you are sensitive.

I've had three fills w/o any problems. My doctor uses a portable ultra sound machine. The tech marks the spot and his assistant comes in to do it. I've never had any pain.

Maybe you could ask for some lidocaine to deaden the area first. OR better yet, find yourself another doctor.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
