What are the top three things that have made you successful with the Lap Band?...

32 ounces of Water 15-30 minutes before eating.

3 meals a day

1 snack....usually an apple in the afternoon

A balance of Protein grams to carbs/sugar grams, and at least 70 grams of Protein

consistent fills every 3 weeks until almost reaching goal, now only every 5 weeks or so.

Wow, that's pretty intense follow up.

1. My band helps control my GERD, so I am not eating thousands of calories worth bread and crackers to reduce the symptoms.

2. If I overeat, I feel like my abdomen is being shoved into my chest.

3. I don't feel deprived and can still eat pretty much whatever I want, just in smaller portions. I don't touch bread, Pasta or rice and lettuce isn't working well either. I have learned to like Yoplus yogurt. Before, I couldn't stand yogurt.

I would say exercise, but due to a series of health problems (unrelated to the band), I haven't been able to start yet.

Also, having someone, whether it be a friend or group (LAP-BAND®, not bypass patients) or provider who can listen to your problems, questions and fears is really necessary.

Yea, that's more than three.

I also can't exercise because of other health problems. Have you been able to lose weight without exercising?

Yes, I am losing 1.4lbs per week on average. I also have no fill at all. I should note, that I do walk a lot. I do cheat on occasion, which allows me to stay sane, but I mostly try to get enough Protein and take my supplements.

I am going to try a light workout this weekend and see how well I do with that. It's only been two weeks since my ovarian cyst surgery, so I have to take it slowly to keep from messing myself up. I haven't been able to do a serious workout in a year now.

1)When I don't drink with or after meals I see a loss that week.

2)Not eating after dinner is over, no matter how hungry I think I am.

3)Blogging. Being able to put my feelings out there and get support means so much to me. (my blog link is in my sig)

My Number 1 is definitely having a really good support system. That being my husband, my family, LapBandTalk, a very supportive Surgeon and his staff and friends. Without this I would never succeed. I’m only halfway there and all these people keep me focused on the right things.

Number 2 is my own willpower. This will never work if you aren’t planning to put in to it 110%. You have to still do all the right things. Eating right, making sure you are properly restricted, getting your workout routines in, keeping a positive outlook and most importantly staying on track during those plateau periods.

Number 3 is being supportive of others. This really helps to keep me in perspective. How can I support someone else when I’m not even doing the right things?

Best wishes to you. Remember all the reasons you chose to try surgery to help you lose weight. Also remember too that all it is IS help. It’s not going to do it all for you. As long as your working your band, your band will WORK FOR YOU!

1) Support--I initially never disclosed my surgery to my family or friends, but that made my surgeon's support group and this website so much more important in my life.

2) Giving myself a break--we've all dieted. We weren't successful. We need to realize that one minor indiscretion does not ruin the entire day/week/year. The scale didn't always demonstrate how hard I worked. I kept measurements to track my success. This isn't a sprint--it's a lifetime of changes we need to make. Realize that we aren't perfect. We will make bad choices. (I wouldn't have been so heavy if I had self control!) The band is simply a tool to allow us to control portions when we're ready. It won't do the work FOR you, but it can help when you use it as intended.

3) Creating a routine---get into the habit of drinking your Water, eating Protein first, and into working out. Routines become your new habits and will eventually replace your old habits.

AND I'm adding #4) Counseling--clearly I couldn't eat away my issues any longer. I needed someone to help me work through whatever latent issues I had. I have a degree in counseling and couldn't figure out what those issues were on my own. I needed someone outside of my life who would not judge me to listen to my frustrations, heartaches, and disappointments. In the end....this is the one thing that I truly believe made me most successful.

1) Not being on another 'diet' (I've lost weight much faster on diets...been there, done that for 20 years...I never feel deprived).

2) Being really 'aware' going through this journey (ie. I could eat more, but I don't need to. I could get more fills and be so tight that I can't eat certain things, but I don't need to- I can still eat anything, just small amounts).

3) Support...my blog and my friends that support me here on my blog have been invaluable.

In the first year after the band, I lost 40 pounds just because I couldn't eat as much. It just came off.

Then I spent the next 9 months eating sugar and carbs and anything i wanted because I was mad I couldn't eat the way I used to. So I acted like a 2 year old and had a 9 month tantrum sort of. I didn't gain more than 3 pounds even though I ate a lot of chocolate. Love that band! But I still exercised during this time. I have always loved exercising.

Now I am back but going to Metabolic REsearch Center and determined to lose the rest of my weight.

So Now I: 1.exercise to burn up at least 400 calories a day, 2.Eat lots of Protein and drink Protein drinks when I want to cheat, 3. eat very little carbs. Maybe 1000 cals a day max.

Metabolic Research Center has really helped with my weight loss.Their Protein Drink is awesome- I love it. I figured out that I need a formal program or I just screw around and go up one pound, down one pound then back up. No progress.

1. Don't drink a half hour before or after you finish eating

2. Chew Chew Chew

3. Put your eating utensil down after every bite.

4. Eat your Protein first.

6. Limit carbs

7. exercise.

WILLPOWER.....Everything depends on your willpower. Once you start making excuses it never stops.

NO BREAD/PASTA/RICE.....I may have a little in Soup (rare), but have never eaten a plate of Pasta, a piece of bread or rice by itself.

AVOIDING NEGATIVE PEOPLE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.....They mess with your head and try and bring you down. Success with the band is mental too.

      Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

        I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

        I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.
