5 days post-op and no energy

Recommended Posts

My surgery was last Monday, November 9. I have had no complications, but I feel so weak. I'm in the mushy stage and I just don't want to eat too much. But I can't be getting in more than 400 calories a day. This is making me edgy and uncomfortable. What I would give for a slice of pizza! Is this normal (the no energy part, not the pizza part)? Soft solids seem like an eternity away!

First- let me congratulate you!!! Second- I could have written this. I felt the same way and was also down to about 400 calories. I found that the anesthesia took a few days to completely leave my body. I really didn't start feeling like myself again until 8 days past surgery. And even then- I had less energy for about 10-12 days. I went back to work 8 days after surgery and regretted it. I was fine the first half of the day and then my body just got pooped for the second half. As for the calories, I just didn't feel hungry and I thought that was a good thing until I felt like I was going to faint while just sitting at my desk at work. I saw my surgeon and he said I was putting my body into starvation mode. I was also afraid of gaining any weight back once I started reintroducing foods back into my diet. His advice to me was get off the scale for two weeks. Don't look at it, not even once. Just concentrate on replenishing my body with fluids and Protein and nutrients to help me heal. And if I was dead tired at the end of the day- go to bed at 8pm if I wanted! I had just had surgery, it's not like I was going to make a lifelong habit of going to bed right after dinner. I drank more Water, had at least one Protein Shake a day along with homemade pureed veggies or an egg white and I felt much better within a week. For me- he was right. I needed to eat right and rest. Give it a few more days. If you still don't feel well, please go see your Dr. Together you can narrow down what might be the cause for you and it will be the best way to getting you to feel better quicker. Best of luck to you!!

Congrats on being banded. You will feel better in about 10 days. Just hold on. Deekel gave you some good advice. Good luck.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
