Anybody get discomfort in their throat when they eat?

Recommended Posts

There's lots of stuff here about food getting stuck and causing pain in the chest, and about first bite syndrome, but does anyone else feel it in their throat? When I ate, I would start to get discomfort in my throat, and it got a little worse with each bite, or sometimes it took several bites before it started. Sometimes it would get really bad, and sometimes it didn't resolve until the food came up. It has lots of similarities to getting stuck that way.

It happened mostly after the surgery (mild then), just after my first fill and since my second fill. My nurse and surgeons at the clinic I go to seem to find that I felt it in my throat to be a little odd. Anyway this week the surgeon thought best thing to try was taking a little of the fill out. It's been 2 days and I haven't had anything close to that issue. :) So, I was too restricted. Only trouble is now I can eat more than the recommended amount again (still less than before though so I could still lose weight). I'm thinking I'll just wait and see how the weight loss does go - I dread the thought of even a small fill right now.

Just to be clear, I am still so happy I did this, and with the weight I have lost.

This happens to me after each fill. My doctor said it was from swelling. Some people swell after each fill and the length of time it takes to reduce the swelling varies. I'm usually this way for about 10 days after each fill.

I am so glad you said that BethL. I am sitting here burping and feeling that ache in my throat. I have never had this feeling after a fill. It was my 4th fill. I know they had a little trouble with scar tissue and took a few more jabs then before. I called them today and they said I could come in or wait and see what happens till Monday. I got the fill on Tues. I can get some liquid and soft stuff down, but not much. I think I'll ride it out and see if it loosens in a few days.

I just had my 4th fill this past week as well and I puked for the first time last night, tried to eat again and now I know I shouldn't have. lol But I can definately tell a difference with this last fill. I am hoping the same thing though, that it will get better. My band it just teaching me I guess.

I can eat a lot more than I should too, however I stop when the food doesn't taste as good or when I get to my 1 1/2 cup limit. I find that it is really enough, I just don't have that stuffed feeling that I always thought I needed. I think if we beleive we need to be stuffed, we will never be successful losing our weight, and will have a lot more problems with the fills.

I have also been trying to figure out just exactly what make us feel full. Since I am a diabetic, I can check what is going on with my blood sugar, and I am always hungry when it is either too high or two low. When I get it back to normal, I am not hungry anymore. I only added this because I believe most overweight people have some insulin resistance. In varying degrees all of us have fluctuations in blood sugar. If we expect to feel full, our insulin hormones kick in, and produce too much, and this causes hunger again in a couple of hours. This is reason enough to eat small amounts and see what happens. I believe many will be surprisingly satisfied if they eat small amounts and eat mostly Protein and green veggies.... Hope it helps...

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
