When cooking meat in slow cookers, be sure to thououghly brown (almost black) the meat in pan first before you slow cook it. Much better broth and meat flavor that way.

I'm going to just die if I can't eat steak anymore. After 10 months I finally got the fill I should have and am finally eating way less and getting full quickly. I'm a big steak fan that will break my heart. BTW, the beer can chicken cookers in the oven is absolutely the best chicken I've ever eaten. 1.25 hours at 350 degrees with a half can of beer up the chicken on a pie tin half full of Water. I sprinkle heavilly with poultry seasoning before cooking and it's as moist as chicken can be.

I think you're right. I think I can only have fine ground beef or turkey. I think we're very close in our fill levels. keep it up! Sounds like you're doing great!!!

I am having trouble with all meats since my last fill. I'm very tight, but it is easing, so I don't want to ask for an unfill just yet. The only thing I have been able to eat that has meat is chili. I was trying to think of other meats I could eat and try something in the crock pot. I remembered a great recipe and thought I would share. This recipe comes from the little cookbooks that came with crock pots in the 1970's. I think they have since replaced it with other recipies. I tried to find it on other crock pot/slow cooker site to get the nutritional info, but can not find it. The first time I remember having this was as a kid in 1974 and the entire family loved it (serve with bread and butter for the kids...yum!)

I know it has quite a lot of Protein and can be modified to make it healthier, but would suggest the original recipe be tried first to understand the unique taste and how all the ingredients play an important part. I have made this many times over the years and get raves at pot-lucks and such. Quite a large recipe when you can only eat 1/2 cup, but if u have a family it works great.

Fills a regular size (3 1/2 qt.) crock pot.

ONE POT dinner

1 lb. ground beef browned/drained

1/2 lb. bacon cooked/cut up small pcs.

2 31oz. cans pork and Beans

1 16oz can kidney Beans, drained

1 16oz can butter beans, drained

1 cup chopped onion

1 cup catsup

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon liquid smoke

3 tablespoons white vinagar

1 teaspoon salt

dash of pepper

Stir ingredients together well in crock-pot cover and cook on low 5 to 9 hours / high 3 hours

Question for you all who have problems with certain foods.. wondering if I have no problem now (no fills yet) does that mean I may have a problem later? I'm thinking the answer is yes???

I can only speak from my own experience, but the tighter my fills get, the more trouble I have with eating meat. I have tried eggs twice since being banded and had so much trouble I will not try them again anytime in the near future.

I'm scared to even start the mushy stage - I'm 5 days post op and on my 4th day, I did something quite stupid and ate 2 teaspoons of eggplant dip (it was mushy). Well, it got stuck for roughly 10 hours (staid up all night and waited breathlessly until the clinic opened). I got unfilled and finally, relief. The band was too tight to begin with since I wasn't even getting Clear Liquids down with ease but I thought that was normal at the time.

But the whole ordeal has seriously left me scarred to the point that I'm happy to remain on liquids if that means avoiding getting stuck again. I have poor pain tolerance I guess and the whole thing scared me to death.

I figured that was the answer - I am having wishful thinking! What form of eggs? Scrambled giving you trouble too?

You probably shouldn't be eating mushies yet should you? I had to wait 10 days. You are likely swollen and with time that will get down and you can have the mushies no problems. Did the eggplant have seeds and skin? Give it time. Trust me I am at 4 weeks post op and 2 weeks post op the restriction you feel is much more than 4 weeks post op!! I am getting a fill in a few days.

i have not tried meat yet, because i am only 6 days post-op but he recomended Adolph's meat Tenderizer to dissolve foods that get stuck ( 1/8th teaspoon in 1 tablespoon of water)

i dont know its true, but i hope it works

Be sure to get the meat tenderizer with NO MSG. Meat tenderizer contains papaya and/or pineapple enzymes.

Unfortunately, the answer is yes. And more bad news, what you can eat can change with each fill. One the brighter side, you will learn your body's signals for problems, and stop eating before getting stuck.

First I tried scrambled .... much pain after 2 bites

second time was hard boiled ..... so much pain I thought I wasn't going to live (exagerating a bit) thought I was going to have to throw up, but managed past it.

Keep in mind that you may be too tight too eat any meat or eggs immediately following a fill, but if you continue to have that problem after a few weeks you should get a slight unfill. We should be able to eat most foods without a problem even though some of us never can eat foods like chicken, Pasta, or bread. Keeping a band too tight leads to problems with the band and eventual removal. It also slows and stops weight loss in the long run.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
