How long does it usually take??

Recommended Posts

I have my first appt. with my surgeon in two weeks, and Im so nervous. Ive already done all the paper work and had my psych evalution but Im wondering how long does it usually take from the time you go to the surgeon til you are scheduled for your surgery? I was never told about a pre op diet, or having to go on a 6mth diet first, Im just so anxious and I dont want to get there and them tell it will be a another couple months.

Its all up to you, like I had to do a lot of test.....like a upper gi, sleep study, echo, chest xray, pft, stress study and ekg....I just made. The appointments back to back....sometimes 2 in a day...verify what the surgeon and insurance requires

The six month diet is almost always an insurance requirement and requirement from the surgeon. (At least I've never heard of it being a doctor's requirement, but you never know).

If you're self pay, like I was, it really depends on your surgeon's schedule and yours.

I had a meeting with a nutritionist who went over our pre-op diet, post-op diet, and general meal plans.

I called to make an appointment with my doctor the day after I went to his seminar. After my appointment with the surgeon, it took just a little over two months to get on his schedule for surgery. I could have gone a week earlier, but I couldn't swing it that week.

It will vary from surgeon to surgeon and insuranc co. to insurance co. I met with my surgeon in March. He had an extensive pre-op program. I met the surgeon's requirements in July. Was submitted for approval to my insurance company and approved in July. My surgery was done in August. So, for me it was about 5 months between my initial consult and my actual surgery. Best thing to do is find out what your surgeon & your insurance company's requirements are. I've read here that self-pay people tend to get through the process faster.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
