How is everyone doing on the pre-op diet? I have to do Optifast for just over three weeks before my surgery on 10/13.

It so far hasn't been too bad....22 days to go!!

All pre-op diets suck, lol!! The one I had to follow was not sooooo bad. It helped me to know that the whole reason behind the pre-op diet is really for our safety on the operating table. Hang in there....you can do it!

I'm on my 4th day of the pre op diet and feel really good. My Doctor has me drinking 2 Protein shakes a day and one meal of 4 oz of lean meat (chicken/fish)with a green vegie. I thought this was going to be horrible, but I feel better then I did stuffing my face all the time. I lost 10 pounds in 3 days. I know it was Water, but what a relief. My surgery is set for 10/07/09 if my insurance approves it. I can't wait to get the yes/no answer from them as the waiting is very hard. Good luck to you

Diana

It's hard, but not as hard as I expected. I do get hunger headaches, but the Protein Shakes are good. I use Muscle milk light.

I am now on day five. Yesterday ended up being very hard for me mentally. I was just ill. My husband thinks its because i haven't eat for four days but I think it's just frustration at myself for letting food control my emotions and my life for so long.

Well a better day is ahead.....:bored:

Only 21 days until my surgery!!:smile2:

I changed my diet from regular to soft then slim fast for 1 wk with lean cuisine dinner and week before surgery on Optifast. I lost 10 lbs prior to surgery. It's been 2 months since surgery and I have lost 50 lbs. I know it's the gradual change in diet habits that have been successful.

Good Luck. :bored:

I am on day 5 of a liquid diet. I was given the choice of what Protein shakes to use: requirements are at least 50 grams of Protein per day, 1000 calories, under 35 grams of fat.

I am counting down the days to my surgery (Monday 9.28.09)-- but I know it will be more of the same after!!

My doc's protocol:

10 days thin liquids post op

10 days purees

then introduce normal food...

So far, it seems like I've 'lost' about 5 pounds-- probably mainly water-- but I'll take it.

Wow! I'm on my 8th day pre op diet and have lost 16 pounds. If my insurance doesn't approve me I may stick to this if it is safe. Who am I kidding it wouldn't take long before I made a date with a pizza.< /p>

I start the preop diet in 4 days. I have to have 3 Optifast products per day plus 2 cups 'approved' veggies. I have Choc shakes, beery crunch bars and lemon dessert.

I will probably take the advice on this thread and gradually replace one meal with a shake each day this week until I am fully on the diet by Thursday. I find that I keep having 'last meals' and maybe my mindset will change if I start a bit earlier.

I am committed to making the band work for me. I just worry about my ability to cope with 'head hunger.'

I'm on day 4 of my 2 week pre-op diet and I've lost 8 pounds! I have 4 Unjury Protein Shakes per day (2 with 1 cup of skim milk and 2 with Water or crystal light), 1 cup V8 juice, 1 pk low-sugar oatmeal, 1/2 cup fat free sugar free pudding, 6-8 oz sugar free fat free yogurt, 1/2 cup fo fruit or 1 cup berries, and 1 cup of vegetable Soup (I've been having 1/2 a can of Progresso Light). I'm hungry, but I'm not starving by any means. And watching the weight dop so quickly is a great motivation!!!! In another week, my attitude toward the liquid diet may not be as good though!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
