Has anyone had experience with Cymbalta? It's a capsule and my surgeon said just to open it and mix it with something (although now I'm just "shooting" it straight with water).

Does the lack of coating impact the time release? Would a pharmacist know best?

Hmm, not to contradict your surgeon, but the hospital nurse told me that I should NOT take apart the Cymbalta capsules; I take 60 mg (a big capsule) so they wrote out an RX for 2 (smaller) capsules @ 30 mg. But, I think it would be a great idea for you to speak w/a pharm. -- they are almost always on top of things like this (esp. since Cymbalta is a relatively "new" SSRI & many drs. know little about it.

So I just got banded two weeks ago, quick recap: Surgery on the 25th of Aug, everything was going great. I went home that same day, slept a lot and started the clear liquid diet. On the 27th of august, having taken full sized pills on both the previous days, I tried to take a Vicodin for some discomfort and it got stuck.............

Moral of the story, CRUSH YOUR PILLS!! I know some people have no trouble taking pills and neither did I for two days but it's so worth taking the time...imo.

.

Hi did they actually say that all this happened from a stuck pill? Or was it a freak thing? They told me i can take pills smaller than an M&M

What a horrible story. I had full-sized Vicodin after my surgery. My surgeon did not say anything about splitting the pills, but I did so anyway....Then, 2 days after surgery, I thought I would try taking a whole one. It got stuck. It was very painful but luckily did not last long and passed pretty quickly. Until it did I was panicking about having to throw up.

When I called the PA at my surgeon's office, she said most people do not have a problem taking the whole pills (?) but for me to go ahead and split them. I was a little annoyed that I did not have the liquid Vicodin.

I was prescribed the liquid Vicodin but I am allergic to codeine (sp?) so I was given Darvicet but it only comes in pill form. My doctor told me to break it in two, I was able to get it down with no problems but I don't think it worked properly because it was not supposed to be broken in half so it didn't provide me with much relief. My advice always try to get your pain meds in liquid form, and fill your prescriptions before your surgery date.

I, too, am allergic to codeine and Darvocet is what I have to take for pain. I asked a compounding pharmacist in Dallas about having it made into an elixir. She said she could do it, but it would be cheaper to get the pills, crush them, and mix with chocolate Syrup or honey. That works great for me. I don't worry about the calories in the syrup or honey. Those pills are HORRIBLY bitter, so you want to mix with something very sweet! Oh, and they should start working faster that way, too.

Thanks that just answered my question in a thread I started... exactly what do you do? They are horrible.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
