I live with my brother and just confirmed to him that I would be doing lap band on 7-23-09. And he is mad. he says he doesn't support lap band but he'll support me. We're both obese and he's bigger than me by 100 lbs! I'm 250 and he's like 360 but tall. I'm trying not to be too sad but he's my closest support system. He thinks I'm being lazy and giving up because I'm doing the lap band and not losing weight the normal way but it's not working for me! Any body going through the same thing or have an encouraging word?

I would not worry about his opinion right now you have to do what is best for you and your health. I think you are making a good decision to improve your health. I read a few times were people are told they are just taking the easy way out but it is not that easy. You still have to watch what you eat and drink your Water and exercise. Maybe when he sees what great progress you make he will want it to. Sometimes when there are two overweight people and one loses the other one gets scared that they will be left overweight alone.

Please don't feel that you are a failure for getting this surgery it's a journey you have chosen to open you to a new healthy lifestyle. As for your brother ask him to respect your decision to better yourself no matter how you go about it. Don't be sad because it's the best thing you could do for yourself. Losing weight the normal way doesn't always work it didn't for me and it's ok to have help along the way. Be healthy and strong in your decision and find positive support. Good Luck

I hope your brother comes around once he sees that the surgery is a lot safe now then in years past and that he can be a big part of your success. He will quickly learn that losing weight even with the band is no walk in the park! You will work hard at it, probably harder than any "diet" or weight loss program you have been on.

Good luck to you and congratulations on making the decision to take control of your weight! I am sure glad I did. Who knows maybe seeing you accomplish your weight loss goals will persuade your brother to come over to this side too!

G'ma

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
