So, I know alot of people have problems with "bread" but does this mean all bread or just doughy bread? What about sandwich bread? toatsed bread? donuts? tortillas? I mean is is all "bread products" or just eating a big roll? Will I ever be able to eat a sandwich or egg mcmuffin again, or do I just have to avoid a roll?

For me, it's pretty much all bread and most crackers unless I really need a fill. I know that sounds like the end of the world, but trust me, it really isn't. You'll be surprised at how you will survive without it.

Everyone's different though, I have read that some people are able to eat bread if it's toasted, but that's still not the case with me.

Bread was one of my biggest, if not the biggest demon I ever fought, but suprisingly, I've have adjusted fairly well, though there are some occasions when I miss it more than at other times.

I can eat bread. Toasted is better. It has to be well chewed and I avoid flour tortillas. But if it's a quesadilla (toasted flour tortilla) I can eat it in small bites. I can eat crackers. Townhouse are fine but Triscuits are more risky. They definately need some cheese or dip and small bites. I can do the Breakfast sandwich with the pancake (McGriddles?) fine well chewed and small bites. I haven't tried a biscuit, a bagel, but I have taken a small bite of a roll. Risky. I can eat a hamurger or hotdog bun. Whole wheat is less sticky. I can eat a donut but I just don't (tried a donut hole, went down fine, a bit scary)

It's true that you are better limiting those bad carbs. I know that it would drive me batty to not be able to eat at least a little bit of bread. But I haven't lost as much as Chichigirl, either, so what's that tell ya? :(

I am finding out that I may be one of those that cannot eat bread. I got a grilled chicken sandwich when we went out to eat and after 3 bites my throat and chest began hurting. A couple of weeks later, I tried it again from a different place, but the hurting began again. I stopped eating...

I can eat saltines. Tried them twice. I also ate a blueberry muffin and it was fine.

Go figure!

I don't have too many problems. I had some wonderful crustry hot italian bread the other day. Tonight, I almost PB'd on Pizza Crust though--ouch. I can eat wraps and toasted or grilled bread. I don't dare try soft bread.

I've yet to have a fill, so for me bread isn't an issue yet. I will admit that pre-banding I was a bread addict, but now after banding I hardly give it the time of day. It just really isn't on my short list of daily must haves anymore.

I do however occassionaly enjoy a piece of toast with a pat of butter, or a tortilla wrap with baked chicken strips or taco meat & fixings in it.

I say follow your instincts. Take it slow and see if you can handle it. If after getting my first fill I can no longer handle eating wraps or toast I'll just learn to live without it.

List of problem breads for me:

Bread/rolls/ cornbread/Even wheat bread bothers me

I can eat like 2 or 3 bites of cake but then I start to feel the tightness creaping up and I have to stop at once.

I have not had a doughnut since I got banded ( Figure if I cant do rolls I can't do doughnuts)

A few regular saltine crackers at a time are okay.... but Cheez its are a no no for me. Its like they gum up different than regular crackers.

Oh yeah and those bad old soft tortillia shells are a nightmate.I tried one and it took forever for that terrible stuck feeling to go away and it only went away after the whole thing finally decided to come back up.Talk about the slimes!!! YUCK!!!

These things just arent worth the bad feeling I get when I eat them. I don't miss them one little bit!

torrilla are just fine for me, soft but not hard shells. Corn and flour, are fine, but I avoid corn anyway. Burriots and soft tacos are just fine.

so far toast is a nightmare, soft egg bread, as in a round subway sandwich is went down fine.

Cake, uh mixed results, but I am not interested it cake any more. Havent' tired donuts. Crusty bread seems to be fine, with brie and roasted garlic.

Triscut... hmm, with care. Great care.

I can't eat any bread, cakes, donuts, Bagels - exception to the rules are hard shell tortillas or saltine crackers. Anything else is a PB in the making. I thought it would be hard to give up bread but my band made it real simple. After the first time I ever had bread and felt that pain - I haven't looked back and I really don't miss it. Of course there are those days that I would LOVE to have a piece of Panera's french baguet with some Soup but I pretty much steer clear.

NO bread in soft form...toast is ok if I remember to eat slowly, take small bites and chew well. The saving grace of bread is PITA BREAD. It isn't fluffy like other breads and is great for sandwiches. Still (and this applies to eating in general) always take small bites and chew thoroughly. I eat Triskets also. Don't have a desire for anything else.

I've heard of people avoiding some veges too, but I haven't run into any problems with them as long as I abide by the golden rule of Banding...small bites, chew chew chew and take it slowly.

In my case:

Don't (absolutely) List: Doughy bread, fresh breads, fresh Tortillas, Rice most of the time, toast, Bagels, doughnuts, biscuits (I can eat the crispy tops though),

Do (with careful chewing) list: Baked Tortillas, chips, Pasta (not rice), crackers, nachos, muffin tops (with EXTREME care), pancakes (with EXTREME care)

Also for me.... I can eat more "bread" things later in the evening rather than earlier in the day. I am absolutely NOOOOOOOOO in the mornings. I am challenged to do Water in the morning as I am super restricted in the a.m. but come afternoon I am all good.

If I cant eat it at all once banded I will lose HEAPS of weight very fast because I must say processed carbs are my biggest demon. I regularly have periods of several days where I exist on muffins, bread, biscuits (cookies) and other crap.

I'm really hoping I can handle crispbreads (my favourite lunch lately, a couple of Ryvitas with tuna, Tomato and cucumber and salt and pepper), pita and the occasional piece of toast but I wont be crying if I cant eat much in the way of bread. Its crap for you and you dont need it.

I only hope if I lose my vice I dont suddenly start to like ice cream!

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
