Help! I am 4 days post-op and overall I think I'm doing well. However, I have this constant (and oh so PAINFUL) pressure and feel the need to burp. I just can't no matter how hard I try. I'm walking a lot and taking Gas-X as described, but to no avail. I can feel the gas moving but it goes nowhere. I'm sleeping on my left side at night, but that only helps a small bit. By the midafternoon, I am so bloated with gas that I look like I did when I was pregnant with my twins. Please tell me there is something I can do to relieve this pain. I never thought I'd want to burp like a trucker.

Are you drinking enough Water? my doc says that keeps things moving and makes it easier to burp. I was in the same shape as you except gas-x helped a little. I was ok by 1 week post op, it should subside by then.

This is my 3rd day after surgery and I am having the same problem. It hurts! I just can't pass any type of gas... I hope we both feel better soon!

My sister inadvertently helped me with that. About 3 days post op she drove me to some errands. She is a good driver but she has the habit of taking off at lights and stopping hard when she needs to stop. Then she turn the corners kind of hard too. I had never noticed it before surgery but it was little tough on my belly! She probably didn't drive that hard I was just very sensitive to it. But having her take off like that and stop made my body move back and forth in the seat and it did start me burping. I was sitting in the back seat so I wasn't able to brace myself as quick as I could in the front. I wouldn't recommend this unless you are desperate though. I was ready to get home and was hurting enough to take the pain medicine. So if you do have someone drive you take the pain medicine before you go. I'm glad she didn't drive me home from surgery!

Oh honey! Do I KNOW what you are going through. I posted pretty close to the same post a month ago. I hope I can explain this, but I am afraid I won't be able to unless you could actually see me. BUt, what I finally had to do, because day 2 after being banded I was totally miserable and almost had a panic attack because of the pain and not being able to burp. However, what I finally got desperate and tried was if you have ever hiccuped and felt that pulls at the hollow of the throat? I would hold my breath and pull up from the hollow in my throat and that would actually help me burp. Then if I laid on my my left side, but propped up I was good until the next morning. But I truly sympathize with you. I still can't burp regularly and have to use the above method, but what was strange is the other night I was brushing my teeth and was bent over on one elbow sort of twisted and a "natural" burp came out. I haven't done it since. But, I am finding I am having A LOT of gas that localizes on my left side and puts pressure under my ribs and makes my collar bones hurt. I had tried Phazyme, gas X and it did NOTHING. So, I happened to find these charcocaps at Wal-Greens and these are helping so wonderfully. The only problem is when I get a fill, I probably won't be able to swallow anymore pills. :) Just know that eventually the gas inside your tummy will finally abate. You will feel so much better after it does.

Hugs and I am sorry you are going through this. It truly is miserable.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
