Something's gone wrong...

Bleeding in the urine could be a kidney stone, or urinary tract infection(UTI), is your urine concentrated/strong odor/darker in color...does it burn when you go? a UTI causes crystals to form which cut at the ureters as they pass, this can cause bleeding. Did you have a urine catheter (foley) during surgery? Those can cause an infection sometimes.

If blood is in your stools, your stools would be black and tarry, or could be red and bloody. If it's black it indicates a bleed higher up, perhaps as high as your stomach, i.e. a bleeding ulcer, or something surgically related. If it's red blood, it's lower such as hemmorrhoids bleeding etc. Did your dr give you an antibiotic to take?

Pyruvidine perhaps? (UTI med that can turn your urine as orange as a tequila sunrise). Was your urine tested? You can buy urine sticks at pharmacy's to test yourself for a UTI.

I just contacted two of my doctor friends to get their imput. Maybe you'll find this helpful, maybe not. Internal bleeding from inside the intestines or stomach comes out in a bowel movement in the form of a substance that looks like black tar "black tarry sytool" is what was said; do you have that? Red blood in stool or bleeding at the time of a bowel movement is usually caused by hemeroids or a small broken capillary just inside the rectum and is usually nothing to worry about; however, if it occurs often it is imperative that you be checked by a specialist. Blood in the urine can be cause by a reaction to medicine (rare, but it sometimes happens). Are you running a fever? That would indicate some type of infection, most likely kidney or bladder. Both of these doctors seem to think it's that rather than anyting serious, especially being so soon after surgery. Both also felt that a complete blood pannel was very important; I'm assuming you alredy had that done. Neither are experts in this particular field of medicine although both are surgeons; but neither fely that this was something that should cause you "drastic worry" (as one put it) unless it becomes worse or doesn't improve. Both said it was imperative that you see a doctor and tell him or her exactly what medications you're taking, what surgery you've had done, and what you've done post-op; it sounds like you've already done that. So that's their oppinion, although, of course, they're completely unfamiliar/uninformed with all of the exact specifics of your case. I wish you the absolute best. This statistic may prove comforting: over 80% of the things we worry about never happen, and what does happen is seldom even half as bad as we expect it to be. Please keep us all advised as to your condition. Our thoughts and prayrs are with you. Good luck.

It's coming out in my urine, causing terrible spasms in my bladder. It could also be coming out during bowel movements, I'm not sure. My doctor did lab tests and my blood levels are apparently OK, I guess. She didn't say much about it. She didn't mention Upper GI or Lower GI, so I'm not sure about that either. I had an X-Ray done and then a CT scan on my kidney and both showed no stone. I have to go to my band doc tomorrow so he can do tests to see if it relates to the band. Not sure what he's going to do. I'm almost certain it has to do with the band, though.

The lady I work with bleeds alot when she gets bladder infections. Did they check you for bleeding hemorrhoids?

Hope you feel better soon !!! keep us posted.

Thanks a bunch for your concern, everyone! I'm doing better day by day, though I'm steel bleeding. For those in the medical profession who have asked about it being kidney stones or a bladder infection, it's neither. They did an x-ray for the stones and found none and they checked for a bladder infection and nothing came up. They checked my red blood-cell count(?) and said I was OK. So this is one reason they really don't know where the bleeding is coming from. I can't really afford whatever tests they need to do on me to figure out what it is (in case it's surgically related, in which case my insurance won't pay for the test), and it gets better day by day, so I'm going to just continue on this path. I think I may have done something while exercising on Monday evening, because it started Tuesday morning. But my doc doesn't seem too worried about it because my blood count was OK and it gets better. My biggest worry earlier was that I'd done something to the band. This looks less and less likely to me as I feel no pain, nausea, etc. And based on some of your feedback, it sounds like if I had bleeding internally from the band it would appear in my stools, which it doesn't. So I think I'm ok. Thanks for all your prayers and concern!!!!!

So glad to hear from you! We are all very concerned. I'm glad to hear that your blood count is good.

I will still pray! Be careful with yourself.

While I am glad that things are looking better for you,, I am concerned because not all kidney stones will show up on an Xray only..

I know this from experience, 1 I think it has to do with what kind of stone it is and 2 the size..

I dont remember what kind of kidney stone they thought I might have had, but the ER did an Xray first when I went in with so much pain, then thought it was an Ovarian cyst or Ectopic pregnancy, then ---then--- then got a urine test and saw all the blood in there and neg for pregnancy, and sent me in for a ct scan of abdomen and pelvis and saw I had 2 kidney stones and one had just come out of the kidney in the renal pelvis I think is what they said and it was 3mm and another was still in the kidney. Not trying to scare you at all, jsut showing that my X-ray was normal, but the CT scan showed it....

The best wishes to you.......

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
