Any Faulty Realize Bands Out There?

Recommended Posts

JillyPoo,

I also believe it was the surgeon and not the band. I have so many friends that have the band without any problems. The surgeon was very nice and extremely concerned, met me at the ER, called and checked on me at home, personally took my phone calls but I was out of the $350 fee to join the program, plus missing work for 2 months and now I'm fat again. It's really disappointing but I'm glad to be alive because the outcome could have been very different had I not gone in for band repositioning. The infection was really affecting everything including confusion (I would get lost coming home), my vision was blurred and my skin tone had changed. I never thought I had septicemia. Good luck on your continued weight loss. I'm sure you are elated.

Nothing is worth your life :tongue2:. I hope you didn't think I was trying to down play what happened to you because I wasn't. I can't even imagine how scared and confused you must have been. I wish you the best...

I was realize banded 9/18/09. No problems so far.Just a little tugging where my port is when I twist my waist for any length of time. I've had one fill 3ccs. no restriction yet but have lost 38#. another 3 cc to be put in a week. Trying to be optimistic that I won't encounter any problems down the road.

Jilly,

I understood what you were saying and appreciate the warm thoughts and concerns. I just explained in more detail what happened. I want to be rebanded because the medical benefits were great. I got off my hypertension medication in 1 week, I didn't have to sleep with the CPAP in 2 weeks and my body did not hurt as bad with the reduced weight. Those were my goals and reasons for having the surgery. Now all of those thing are back (my blood pressure became elevated immediately after surgery) and I don't know what to do. If it was easy to lose weight I would have never gotten this big and I have tried so many diets and weight loss programs. I would like to speak with someone who has been rebanded before. Thank you for being so kind.:tongue2:

I am getting the Realize band in 5 days... my wife and I are getting banded on the same day.

I've read horror stories about ALL of the different weight-loss surgeries (not just banding), but I seem to hear many more positive ones than negative. That's really all I have to go on. My doctor chose the newest Realize for me, and he had gastric bypass himself, so I feel that he knows what he's doing.

My wife and I are both excited... I'm a little more nervous than she is, since I've never had any kind of surgery before.

Wish us luck!

I had a revision of a "kinked tube" @5 months out. This happened after gall Bladder surgery @4 months out. I have a simple way of reasoning I theorized that the gall bladder surgery caused the kink in my tube. All is well now !

I also had the same problem. They could put saline in but not pull saline out. I had surgery they replaced my port. Realize paid for the port but I had to pay the doctors. Since the port was replaced I have not lost a pound. Not please about the bills.

I posted her under this topic awhile back as not having had any problems. Since then had a little bump in the road, but not sure if it's the band or the surgeon...

I think I may have been overfilled and not sure if this is the surgeon not being as accurate as possible on how much he takes out before adding more. I ended up in ER after throwing up for five days. Initially had all fill removed (or so we thought). Was scheduled for revision becuase they thought the band had slipped. Surgeon had a scheduling conflict so surgery was postponed but I've been dealing with PA lately. We decided to go ahead and refill partially. As it turns out I still had over a cc still left in the band, which if you include the 8 ccs they took out in the emergency room and then 1 cc I had taken out the month before, would bring me up to at least 10. so I'm really wondering if the throwing up was just because I was overfilled. So I've had 4ccs in for about 3 weeks with no problems (no restriction either thank you very much...agghh...I've gained 10 lbs ...but it's been a great summer...lots of pina coladas...so I've had my summer sojourn...lol) I go Monday for another fill. I'm sure they won't do more than maybe 2. But the PA seems to be better at getting more out of the band than my surgeon was.

So we'll see how it goes. I personally think it will all be okay but if it's not, it probably won't rear its ugly head until there's some real restriction on the band.

But I'm am so not discouraged. What being unfilled has done has made me get up off my lazy butt and join the gym and also to get out more often to the pool in my housing development and swim as much as I can. So even with my weight gain, I'm not discouraged. I know that as soon as I start getting restriction the bread will be back out of my diet.

sorry to ramble...but I don't fault the band. My surgeon is very very inexperienced when it comes to the band, like under 20 total. My daughter had the Lap-Band, no problems, but her surgeon had done over 4k and had told her that the biggest issue with the bands is port placement and stitch placement for the flap that holds it in place.

So worse case scenario, I've been approved in case I need it for the revision.

Good luck all.

Trisha

I started LapBandTalk the night I came home from surgery mid July 2003. Following my own Lap-Band® procedure, I was looking for information and community support. I came across a few helpful web sites, but they all lacked a sense of actually belonging to a group of people who share many similarities, struggles and habits.

After years of researching and reaching out to the community, we've been able to build the most comprehensive online resources for all types of Weight Loss Surgeries. Hundreds of thousands of registered members contribute amazing stories and useful information to our pages.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
