Have u done something lately that u've ALWAYS wanted to do but didn't.....

because of your weight? I was just wondering because there is something that I have always wanted to do but never did because my weight was a big factor in it. Now that I have lost the majority of my weight I have decided that I was going to do this and people are telling me that I am crazy. I decided to come to all of you to get your opinion since we are all going through the same thing and maybe get some different advice. I have decided to join the military......leaning towards the Naval Reserves. Ever since high school I wanted to go to the military. Had taken the ASVAB and was all primed to go to the Air Force.....then I got pregnant. Then I got fat and I just kind of gave up on ever joining. Just within the last 3 months has it really started to bother me that I never did it and decided to just go to the websites on a whim and see what the age requirements were. To my suprise they were between 38 and 40 - I'm only 35. So I have decided that for the next 6 months I am going to work my ass off (literally) so that I can pass the physical and get through basic training and just go for it. I haven't gotten a lot of support aboutdoing this from family and friends...and given the current circumstances of the world I can't say that I blame them for feeling the way they do....but shouldn't this be about how I feel and what my desires are? My kids are excited and really supportive and I think I may have inspired my 16 year old to look into joining as well. So what do you all think?

Carmen, the military's not my thing -- far from it -- but if you have always wanted to join up and the only thing standing between you and your wish was your weight, I say follow your dream (if that's not too big of a cliché). Our country sure can use all the brave volunteers it can get. Of course your family and friends (including virtual ones here at LBT) fear for your safety. But that's about them, not you. They -- and we -- might cry when you head off, but a few of those drops will be tears of pride.

Lioness, I'm jealous of your dream. I always wanted to join the military, too. But I felt I was too old, and now I'm married and could never leave my hubby. Go for it, now!

Camen - congratulations! I have always lived my life not wanting to regret that I didn't try anything...maybe that's why I bought my first harley in 1981 and rode to Sturgis alone in 1982.

I didn't always make the best choices and decisions but those experiences made me the person I am today. I travel overseas as much as I can and experience life with the locals, not play tourist. I have always been uncomfortable that my excess weight (which is a sign of wealth or having food) was rude so I"m hoping that excess weight will soon be gone.

Go for your dreams. Your dreams may not be what others want but that's what makes each of us unique. Live your life to the fullest and have no regrets. Celeste

Tears of pride for sure!

Just curious if there's a special field like being a pilot, communications expert or even electronic warfare and surveillance? (happens to be what I do, antenna's. I work for a major defense contractor). I have 2 nephews that joined over a year ago. One's a weapons specialist and the other manages computer networks. There are several reservists I work with, one guy was called for over 6 months in Kuwait, he was in charge of satellite transmissions at a base that guarded oil tankers leaving the port.

The only thing I accomplished lately is Water skiing. That's what I've been trying to do for months and now everytime I try I'm up! It feels great.

Go 4 it and good luck.

Follow your dream Carmen, follow it.

I, of course, never let my weight stand in my way. Two years ago I decided that I wanted to get a college education, I wanted a BS/BA degree. So, I just went for it. Damn the torpedos, full steam ahead!

I say go for it! It is a wonderful career. & you can't beat the retirement! I don't know what my Grandparents would do if G-pa hadn't retired from the navy. They get all of their prescriptions free. Go for it!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
