Do Carbs Slow or Stop Your Loss?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if anyone else has this issue, and if so, what they do about it:

Every other day or so, I incorporate a carbohydrate into one of my meals, such as quinoa with roasted vegetables or perhaps half of a baked potato. However, when I do this, I tend to either not loose weight, or actually gain a little bit!

I don't want to totally stop eating carbs, there's a reason I wanted the surgery and not to do Atkins! But at the same time, my body doesn't seem to want carbs at all anymore, even when they're healthier ones...

Has anyone else experienced this?:cursing:

I think it depends on the person. Personally, I have great difficulty eating just very high Protein. The weight just doesn't come off, although many of my friends are successful at it.

I just eat a balanced meal incorporating all food groups and find this works for me.

I haven't had a problem with them. I certainly don't eat them in the quantities that I did pre-band, but I eat them regularly. Most often, it's a few whole grain crackers or part of a roasted potato. But I'm down 64 pounds in exactly 4 months which includes the first month after surgery where I didn't lose a darn thing.

i think staying away from white carbs / processed carbs is a good idea - but i too didn't do so hot adhearing to a heavy Protein based diet early on. once i incorporated good carbs into the diet, i lost more regularly.

I stay away from all processed and "white" carbs. I do not like a totally restricted protien diet and incorporate some carbs into my daily intake. I snack on high fiber/high protien cereals, oatmeal with raisins, fruit and veggies. If I feel like having a potato it is usually roasted yams.

I eat some type of carb at least twice a day sometimes even 3 times. I usually have oatmeal for Breakfast or ww toast or ricecakes, and then again for dinner I'll have a carb. I have tried italian bread, but it does not agree with me so it's really not a big deal if I don't eat it. I've had Pasta and rice, but now I buy the whole grain pasta and brown rice. I figure everything in moderation works for me and it prevents me from going overboard on something that I haven't eaten and might start to crave.

Initially I wanted to reply and say, “Actually I don’t count carbs at all. I eat whatever carbs I want along with my meals.” But out of no where- it dawned on me. I may order fries with that chicken nuggets, but they get thrown away. I may fill my plate up with potatoes, corn, and bread but somehow I never manage to touch them. I may bake a cake, but it’ll just sit there uneaten until I give up and toss it. I’ve even stopped ordering sandwiches, wraps, and burgers because the bread-portion was, “a waste of space.”

Without ever realizing it, I have been avoiding carbs. It’s obvious that my body is actively seeking out Protein and vegetables. I just never realized it until now. I’ve been eating this way for about a year now and I’ve lost 160 lbs. I’d have to say, it’s working.

I don't avoid carbs but I do keep them low. I try to eat good carbs but love chips and salsa so I do not always avoid them. I also have a chocolate milkshake here or there so there are more carbs.

I don't seem to lose without a few carbs here or there.

I do eat fresh fruit and veggies as much as I can.

I eat a quite high carb diet - but I only eat good ones. I sometimes think we're talking apples and oranges here though and that the food we have in Australia is a bit different.

For example, i eat a sandwich for lunch most days. but you can buy bread in every supermarket that is definitely not a "waste of space". Its completely wholegrain, stoneground, full of seeds. I wouldnt eat a slice of white bread or "fake" wholemeal - the stuff that's just been coloured brown.

When I eat oatmeal, its rolled oats. They're in their natural state, not processed and put into little packets. I dont eat processed cereals. I eat organic muesli.

So I eat extremely good quality carbs, and I feel terrible when I dont. I have no energy for running otherwise.

But I often dont eat a carb at dinner, because that's when I eat the most vegies and if I've already had carb foods during the day, I consider the vegies and Protein more important at that time.

The reason eating a carb makes you stop losing in such a short space as a day is nothing more than Water - for every molecule of carbs your body has stored (as glycogen in liver and muscles) it also stores 2 water molecules. Go on a low carb diet, shed LOADS of water, miraculous weight loss. Eat a few grams of carbs, back comes some of that water as your muscle stores are replenished - you havent lost or gained much fat in the entire process. - that takes a bit longer.

I agree there is a BIG difference between processed carbs and good carbs and I am not sure that everyone understands the difference. We need good carbs, just not the processed white flour and fat variety...

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
