Question...Seminars

SOrry if this was asked but I couldn't find it anywhere...

Hi,

I am, I guess what you would call, "new" to the lap-band procedure. I am 25, and have a BMI of 44:( I have a few appointments this next week for "seminars" with different doctors, and I have a question....

What exactly can I expect at the seminars?

My seminar was presented by a surgeon who explained different weight loss surgery options. He showed a power point presentation on each procedure. There was then a question and answer time.

There were also some people there who work with insurance to answer questions.

I just went to a seminar a couple days ago. There was about 8 of us (potential patients) in a room. There was also the surgeon, a girl from the office (to talk about insurance/financing), the psychologist, and a girl who got the sleeve in September (and has lost 100lbs).

The surgeon just went through a powerpoint presentation about the Lap Band and Gastric Sleeve (which are the only two weight loss surgeries HE performs). Then he answered anyone's questions. And we just filled out a paper with our insurance information (and contact information). We were told they would contact our insurance companies and find out what the requirements are for approval.

That's it.

My wonderful surgeon covered various bariatric surgeries and the success rates (and successful "reversal" rates) of each. He then went into more detail on the 2 he performs, banding and bypass. He described his "credentials" including how often he's done each surgery, what type of band he prefers/uses and why, etc. He discussed the procedure and life style changes required by each. He discussed the negative side effects (like Hair loss and slippage, death...) and how much and how severe each is for his patients. Then he had a Q & A time (very patient) and THEN that great guy took another 20 min to just talk to my husband about it all (Husband is an RN who worked in a GI lab and was against it but was all for the band after doc and he talked and doc addressed his concerns)

Afterward if we wanted we could immediately schedule a follow up appt, or we could take our time. No hard sell whatsoever. I immediately felt at ease and valued as a person, not just a patient.

Also keep in mind that while they like to position these events as "Informational Seminars", they are, in reality, SALES PRESENTATIONS.

Make sure you do PLENTY of your own independent research. Don't simply go to a couple of seminars and make a quick decision. It probably took you a lifetime to become obese....take a good long time in deciding which is YOUR best method for regaining your health!

Headhunter I think you're right to a point about the sales thing. However, my experience was very low key. In fact, because I'd wanted the band since 2003, had researched it TO DEATH and back, and knew I did not want any other procedure (I was a nursing student; I know how to research medical issues) I called and asked if I could just skip the seminar and make my first appointment to see the surgeon (I had researched HIM and figured I'd go with him) I was put on hold and then told "No. You have to go to the seminar before we'll schedule you." My doc presented all surgeries, talked about his style, his ethic, his credentials, and then after a Q and A session where he patiently answered what seemed to me like the same questions over and over, we were let go. We couldn't even really schedule an appt after because his staff was essentially gone, so that meant we all HAD to sleep on it.

Of course this may be just a clever advanced sales tactic. I understand you feel you chose a poor surgeon and have paid for it. But all men aren't dogs, all blondes aren't dumb, and all surgeons aren't in it JUST for the money. Money is an aspect, but for the good ones, it isn't the only aspect, or even a top aspect.

We just have to be prudent in our choices.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
