Banded 05/01/09 and discouraged already

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I was banded on May 1, 2009 and have already hit a plateau!!! I lost 8.8 lbs between April 21st and May 7th (liquid diet to post op appt) and then 3.3 more lbs between the 7th and the 11th but haven't lost a single ounce since May 11th. Its been 15 days and nothing. I am eating between 800 and 1000 calories a day and working off 300 - 400 of those calories off at the gym. I don't understand this at all.

Two days before my surgery I seriously considered cancelling because I just didn't see it working for me, after all, nothing else has. Now I'm wondering if I did the right thing? Maybe its not going to work for me.

Did anyone else have this kind of trouble?? Am I just expecting too much at this point?? My first fill is on 05/28/09, will that help me get past this plateau??

Please share any advice or encouragment.

Just relax...you are doing everything you should be doing. You are in "bandster hell" right now. Many people actually gain weight between their surgery and their first fill. You either have very little or no restriction at this point. One thing that may be causing this plateau is the fact that your caloric intake is pretty low and has been for awhile. Your body may be conserving calories due to the lack of intake. In essence, you are in "starvation mode". The advice given to me was to keep caloric intake between 1100 - 1300 calories per day to avoid this.

Give it a few more weeks and discuss this with your physician at your fill. I will tell you I'm not a medical professional...just letting you know what I've been told so far. Please don't get discouraged and keep exercising. You're going to look great!

I was banded May 4th and I lost 9# from May 4th-May 22nd since then I have dropped another pound and a half. I was getting frustrated too because I'm not eating that much but I realize my body is storing everything I do eat because it thinks I'm starving it. Make sure you are drinking 64 oz of Water and you'll start losing again but remember this is slow process, thats what I keep telling myself.

Hang in there! When didn't gain it overnight so it will take time to lose it.

If you havn't had a fill like me i can actually eat anything at the moment but i was told by my surgeon not to go to the gym until past my first fill. Purly walking for the first months because gym's promote muscle development. As muscle weighs more than fat your weight will not reduce as fast but your inches will.

So i am sticking to my diet although i could eat anything and tuff it out till first fill. Remember banding is 60% the band and 40% you still. You need to make a mental change in how you deal with food first off then start slow gym work.

Slow weight loss is more beneficial than fast weight loss due to the skin elasticity takes time to recover. I am sure if you ask someone with excess skin and fast weight loss if they wished it went slower with less excess skin, they would agree slow is better, dont worry and wait for the fills to catch you at the right restriction. Dont worry so much about the gym first off, whats more important is yes regular exercise(aerobic not cardio) and concentrating on managing the dietry side of the banding. Finding what works for you on the food front i half the battle.

You are still healing. I experienced the exact same thing and panicked. Weeks 2-6 post surgery I lost and gained the same 3-4 pounds. I too was frustrated as my calorie intake was much lower. But you are doing everything right. Once I got my first fill at 6 weeks I began to lose consistently. Just let your body heal. My nutritionist told me to increase my calories to 1200 and I think that did help. That might be an idea?

In addition to the fact you are still healing, you have likely made the transition from post-op liquid to mushy foods and now to solid foods. That can temporarily stop your weight loss as your body re-adjusts to getting "real food".

Once you start getting fills and get close to your sweet spot, then you will see consistent weight loss.

You just have to remember that your band isn't some magic device that instantly and magically makes the pounds fall off. You are on the very first steps of a journey so just have a little patience.

Hey Tm I was banded on the 6th and lost 13 lbs the first week of surgery. I am also eating around 1000 calories a day and not losing anything. Well I go up a pound then down a pound. I guess after reading other post this is pretty normal. You would think though we would lose something. I get my fill on June 16th. Can't wait!!! I guess we'll just hang in there until our first fill. Good Luck!!

I was banded on April 28th and am also in BANDSTER HELL.............will power can only last so long (which is the reason I am overweight ... no will power).

I am trying my best to eat small amounts - I am able to stick to around 1000 cals a day. Minimal carbs - 70g of Protein.

I had an appt with my PCP today - she indicated that she may want me to include B12 in my Vitamin supplements.....geeze ANOTHER PILL.

Hello! The best thing to do is just have patience and keep your body guessing. Throw in an off day here and there. Keeping your body steadily at the same caloric intake, and your body adjusts to it and burns only what you give it.

Drinking plenty of Water is key to losing weight also. It flushes your system and keeps it washing all those excess calories and "bad stuff" out. It also keeps you feeling energized!

...and yes, you are 100% correct, it is a slow process.

You just have to remember that your band isn't some magic device that instantly and magically makes the pounds fall off. You are on the very first steps of a journey so just have a little patience.

Exactly! I'd even go so far as to say that it is 25% band and the rest is mental. All the band will do is keep you from eating TOO MUCH. Most likely you will still be able to cheat the band with high fat high calorie foods.

Good luck to all!

the other day my brother in law pointed someting out to me that I think is valid for all of us to consider. He said that he notices I get full fast. but when there is a lot of food around and its a social event I will eat non stop the entire time. I guess I didnt notice it. I have had a hard time getting the weight off and I was banded in december. Take a paper and pen and if needs be a scale and weigh everything and write it down. when I do it I say holy crap I snuck some in here and there and it amounts to being enough to put a hitch in my get up

Only 8 pounds down in six weeks....................

I am in bandster hell but so glad to hear it is not just me!! I have friends banded the same time that re down 18 to 20 pounds already...........

Thanks everyone for all your support and words of encouragement. My first fill is tomorrow and I'm excited to talk with the doctor and see what advice he can give. I am trying to keep positive but finding it hard. My sister made a comment to me yesterday that really just set my mind back in motion and took my body with it. She said, "Well at this rate I was right, you will never be thinner than me". She's always been the thin one and has recently gained about 25 lbs putting her at 155. Its comments like that that just make me want to be 154!!! How can people be sooooo RUDE??

I just got back from my 4-week post op appt.

I lost 1.6lbs since my 2-week appt........and boy my doc was upset

She had expected more weight loss.

She said that I HAVE GOT TO use my will power when it comes to eating --

and that I MUST exercise harder.

The 3-4 times per week isn't enough - she wants me to increase to 5-6 times per week with a significant amount of sweat equity.

I appreciated her straightforwardness --- I really hope it gets me to stay on the correct food intake. One thing she said for me to try is to SHUT DOWN the kitchen after 7:30pm.

NO ONE is allowed to get any food -- beverages are ok - as long as NO sugar and NO calories.

And I am going to set smaller goals -- some daily - and others will be for these next two weeks.

June 10th is my FIRST fill date!!!! Can not wait!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
