Why no caffeine on pre op diet?

Recommended Posts

Please tell me why no caffeine on pre op diet.

All I want is 1/2 c of black coffee to get me going.

My doc says no caffeine ever pre-op/post-op. The # 1 reason I have been given is that it can contribute to ulcers. Other reasons I have been given is that it functions as a diuretic and after WLS it is very important to stay hydrated. I have also been told that caffiene can stimulate the appetite.

I was a heavy coffee drinker -- 1st cup at 5:30 am and drank straight through unil about 3:00 pm daily. Probably had about 10 cups a day on most days.

I started to wean myself off by setting a # of cups of regular coffee. I allowed myself 3-4 cups a day. I did that for a week or so. Then for a couple of weeks I drank 1/2 caf. Finally, I move to straight Decaf. It was rough, that's for sure. I had headaches for about the 1st week after I went totally decaf.

My Nutritionist actually told me the caffeine would erode the stomach wall where the band is and cause the band to intrude in. I told my surgeon this, and he said there has never been any clinical evidence of this. He said, like all liquids, coffee will run right past the band(assuming you are not drinking and eating at the same time), so it would not have time to mess with the banded area any more than the rest of the stomach. He also said, as long as you are drinking in moderation, the diuretic and appitite stimulant factors are minor. At that point in the conversation, I was practically jumping for joy. I work at Starbucks, after all, so Caffeine is practically required...

one of the things that was allowed on my post op diet was coffee & tea....so, i dont think coffee has any effect on the band. i think it just depends on the dr.

I was allowed coffee and tea on both my pre and post op diets. Always do what your doctor tells you to do, but...... I love my coffee and I need it too. Good luck. Becky

I was told by my nutritionist that caffeine is a gastro intestinal stimulant. Which is true. It tends to speed up digestion and getting you ready for post op times when you need to stay full longer it may be best to begin the withdrawal now vs. later when everything is adjusting.

Good luck!

lablover - how does that work? if you drink coffee after you eat it helps stimulates digestion? Can we drink the coffee BEFORE we eat anything and be okay?

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I too love a wee bit o' coffee.< /span>

Truely, I don't need much but I love the smell as it brews and good coffee can't be completely ignored.:wink2:

I really appreciate your input.

Re: having caffeine before or after eating, I am not sure, but caffeine is a stimulant and it stays in your body ( not sure of the half life). Being a true caffeine lover and having experienced withdrawal headaches. I have been told that it can stay in your system for up to 12 hours, so before or after eating I am not sure that it matters especially if it stays in your system up to 12 hours.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
