Why You Shouldn't Eat Salad

If I had a dollar for everytime I've heard the glycaemic index manipulated and misrepresented like that I'd be wealthy. It the glycaemic index of the entire meal that counts - not the individual glycaemic index of something (unless you eat it on its own). If you eat a Protein source with your meal and by and large avoid really high GI foods - white bread, rice, sugar basically, then the glycaemic load will be moderate and it will be a slowly digested energy providing meal that doesnt give you a big high. But you can in fact eat sonething like white rice and as long as you eat it with low GI foods, it balances out the entire load.

And that's why many people dont believe high Protein diets are necessary at all. You can achieve similar blood sugar effects with an overall low GI diet - one that is not focussed only on protein.

Especially with a band. food sits in the pouch, its not even in the main part of your stomach being digested for a while.

People must think their bodies are magic. I mean a few months back we had a so called nutritionist who had it completely arse about and insisted that your body digests Proteins for energy first and in preference to carbs and that's why carbs are fattening. Um, okaaaaaaaay. I'd suggest nobody visits HER! Now this - do you really believe your food drops neatly from your pouch into your stomach in exact order of the mouthfuls you ate it, to be digested in that order? It all gets churned up, mixed around and digested as a mass. Your stomach cant pick out which bits are which!

It depends what you put on the salad. I love a good salad with ranch, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, bacon, chicken, croutons....MMMMmmmmm! The lettuce is just a means for me to put all my favorite fattening toppings on. What I am saying is I DID have to give up salads because I can't stand all the healthy stuff on it!!!! Unfortunately I have stumbled a bit since getting the band a couple of years ago. I depended on my way-too-fattening salads through my pregnancy and during a time when my band was overfilled because for some reason, salads go through the band easier for me than other foods. Consequently I have gained some weight back. My doc also does not suggest salad for his patients *shrug* but those of you who DO like the healthy stuff I say you go for it. I have given them up again and am back to losing weight. FINALLY.

Hmmm, I lost 120% of my excess. By eating SOME lettuce and SOME Protein.

Oh, and the odd tim tam now and again. Which are a carb and sugar orgy.

My doc completely supports my view that this is a lifestyle not a diet. And the founder of HIS practice has a book too - The Lapband Solution by Prof. Paul O'Brien. Wow, whodathunk it? More than one way to skin a cat?

I just object to THOU SHALT... tone of these little Dr Vuong snippets. There's no "thou shalt" about it, its all about balance, lifestyle and the long term, not some diet full of rigid rules. What if you WANT to eat the lettuce one time instead of all your Protein? Is it going to kill you?

I understand and agree with nearly everything you fellow bandsters have commented on with one exception - the one person who wrote that she had the lapband so she wouldn't ever have to diet again. I cannot imagine that working for anyone. I am 14 months out and am hoping to be in ONEderland by next week. I was one of those people who ALWAYS had a salad before my meal, dressing on the side, etc. But after finally coming to the realization that I still have to exercise and count calories to maintain a slow and steady weight loss, I've realized that I wasn't eating more than a couple of bites of the salad I was almost always paying extra for, so I have just started replacing the starch with extra veggies. Most restaurants do this without any extra charge or problem.

I am thinking that if the ingredients you all are mentioning that you eat in your salads were steamed,would you consider them a veggie side dish?? So either hot or cold, no matter what you call the dish - veggies are a veggie?

said that or not, in this thread, but i've said it often enough

I had the band so I'd never have to diet again. I didnt diet. I dont diet. All I do is get full on smaller portions, I choose healthy foods about 90% of the time - but I have my treats, I drink moderately, I love some chocolate after dinner and sweet carb foods like muffins and cake will ALWAYS be my main 'problem food'. I indulge in them every now and again.

The band simply gives me Portion Control. In return for such dietary freedom, I run for an hour most days. Do I consider my life a "diet". No. I eat what I want to when I want to and I dont force myself out the door to exercise. I love running.

I lost 120% of my excess weight to have a BMI of 22, I am in perfect health, my cholesterol levels etc are fine (because basically I do eat a healthy diet).

So its in your definition of diet and what you considered "normal" eating pre band. If you previously ate most of your meals from a drive thru, or out of boxes and packets, you'd find my regime like a "diet". I didnt and I dont.

I dont really care how many calories I eat in a day. Its different day to day. I find if I eat a lot one day, I will be less hungry the next. My band has helped me to listen to my body.

See how there's no SHOULD's in this? You can use a lapband any way that suits you personally.

Jachut: How do you lose 120% of your excess weight? I'm confused... does that mean that you lost 20% more than you originally hoped you would?

To lose 100% of one's excess weight would mean that that person lost enough weight to take them to the top of their healthy weight range, or a BMI of 24.9. I am about in the middle of my healthy weight range at 150lb, with a BMI of 22, and its about 120% of excess weight lost, given my particular healthy range.

But I could say at the same time, for example, that I've only lost 95% of what I wanted to lose, if I wanted a BMI of 21!

Hey,

First off, I understand the comments about diet sodas. My question is about naturally carbonated mineral waters. If I follow the caveman rule, they could have drank mineral Water that was naturally carbonated. Do you still consider an unacceptable drink?

I was told not to drink anything carbonated for at least a year after banding. Then I don't know. I will have to ask my doctor. I gave up my beloved diet coke and an occasional Sam Adams lager and now drink Crystal Light. I am used to it. I enjoy my tea and coffee. Iced in the summer.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
