Ok, I was thinking of you all when I was in for my psych eval. I was left alone to take my tests.

I jotted down on my palm the name of the tests.:unsure:

So here is the first one:

EAT-26

scale (Holmes & Rahe)

http://www.ta-tutor.com/webpdf/ram015.pdf

Dicandrien MBMD - cannot locate a test online... there's like 16+ returned pages in google and I didn't look thru all of them.

This last one was the trickier one. It asks stuff like "I can't do the things I used to enjoy doing." Uh, yeah, I can't do cartwheels, but I can walk and drive so how do I answer this, true or false?

Other questions were like "I am not being honest on this test." And "I am making myself sound worse than I am." And another was "I am answering these questions negatively because today I'm in a bad mood." (I actually could have used the opposite, because I felt I was answering the questions extra nicely because I was in a good mood.)

None of them were very long. The last one was the longest, probably 60 questions? Maybe 100, scan-tron bubbles.

Apparently that last test is popular for bariatric surgery... when I googled it, I get a lot of hits with discussion on the merits of this test for bariatric surgery. Not sure how often the other tests are used. :grouphug: Unfortunately I think I score pretty high on the stress scale! Doh.

Thanks for sharing. :0)

This is a great thread for those who have not yet gone through the process and had the psych eval . . . I know many of us are intimidated by this.

Holding, you should take the MMPI (a personality inventory). When I last administered it back in the 70s (there have been a couple of revisions over the years), it had true/false questions like "I often have black and tarry stools", "I often talk to God", "God often talks to me". As a psych major, I never understood why any of the tests had the "I'm not being honest" routine .... that's like a HUGE joke to me because a pretty good percentage of the people I gave that particular test to were coming into an in-patient psychiatric hospital and I figured they were going to say whatever they wanted regardless of the connection to reality. Actually, I thought some of the questions back in the 70s version were misleading. I mean, a religious person would call praying "talking to God" and I wondered what was wrong with that. Apparently, it meant "conversations" but that's not how the question reads, right? Anyway, you probably came across as about as sane as the rest of us, LOL.

There were a couple faith questions... like "I can get through anything with prayer" and "I am never alone because I always have God." :)

Then there were "I want my doctor to give me detailed information about my health" and "I don't want my doctor to give me detailed information about my health."

I couldn't quite figure out which of those made you crazy.

So I'm a little confused. Is the psych eval to find out if you have an eating distorder and if it is, is that what the Insurance Company and Doctor is looking for? I'm so confused about this whole psych thing.

Hi! I'm not 100% sure but I think the psyc. eval. is so they can determine if you have an eating disorder, for example you overeat to cope with stress. And also to make sure you are mature enough to work with the surgery to achieve the best results. They aren't looking for a reason not to give you the surgery, just the best way to help you along. I hope that helps!

Thanks so much but I guess I'm not getting it. Does the insurance company approve or deny you if you have an eating disorder?

I think they still will because either way if your in for lapband you're over weight. I think they might try and help you get over any problems you do have, ie eating disorder. But in the end if your BMI is over 40 and you want the lapband, psych eval is no reason to say no. I know a friend of mine ate when she was nervous, had the lap band and the doctor helped her get over eating when she was nervous and the combination was very successful.

Geeze! I must have gotten off really easy. All I did was talk to the Dr. for like 20 minutes. He asked questions like, "Are you aware of the risks of this surgery?" I said yes, and he didn't even ask me to explain them or anything. He also asked about my family history, whether I had the support of my husband, etc. Really there wasn't much to it.

I feel for those of you who have been given the third degree. That test sounds like enough to make one crazy!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
