Support and Advice Needed! :-)

Hi everyone,

I am booked in for surgery on the 22nd of May (yay!).

I just had my pre-surgery appointment this morning and it didn't go very well. Since I had my very first appointment I have gained 10 kilos (very bad I know ), so I started the Optifast 3 weeks earlier than they asked me to so I could try and get this extra weight off. So far I have lost 5.5 kilos and thought I was doing well and I am down to 124.5 kilos. I am not technically due to even start optifast until this Friday!

So even though I have lost 5.5 kilos, I am still showing about a 5 kilo gain since they last saw me. My doctor was very unimpressed with me and made me feel like sh*t. He gave me the impression that unless I lose another 5 kilos before surgery (in 2 weeks) they may not be able to do it or it would be very risky. He also made it clear that he didn't believe that I had started optifast and that I was some fat lying pig. He then asked the nurse to give me advice on how to do it properly because clearly I didn't understand.

I am a mixture of scared, upset and pis*ed off right now!!! :tt2:

Hey Tully,

Try not to let it bother you. Remember why you are getting this done and that it will all be over in a few weeks and you will be on the way to your new life.

The surgeon is only being precautious. He needs to make sure the liver is not in the way the get the band around. You know that you have done the Optifast diet and just keep it up until you have the operation.

Keep up the great work and loose the other 5 kg you can do it.

Good luck with it all

What a nasty pri&*(! I'd rethink my doctor if I were you - I wouldnt let anyone else speak to me like that if I was spending such a huge amount of money with them so why would I let a doctor??? Anyhoo - Sunshine's right - just keep up the opti so long as you're on a losing streak your liver will be good doesnt matter what weight you're coming from so long as your liver is giving up the fat you'll be alright - there are much heavier people than you getting this done with no probs so dont sweat it! Be prepared that you might not lose much more on opti as your body has a way of shutting down after about 5 kgs but keep it up anyway as your liver will be better off for it. Good luck and dont let the bastards get you down girl!

People will always be judgemental hon, like the others have said, don't let his comments get to you. Stay positive and remember, you're doing this for yourself and no one else ok. Thats great that you've taken the initiative to start the Optifast early, hang in there, the day will come when you will turn around a say "I've done it and I'm proud!"

I think they do it to scare you! Had a similar experience but with exercise, had sprained my ankle quite badly and the doctor told me that was a fat person's excuse for not exercising. He apologized at our next appointment. I felt like crap after too, but was determined to prove him wrong!

I can't believe poeple can be sooo cruel.....wait a minute yes i can! It just saddens me that doctors who are meant to be there for us and offer support and comfort can really hurt someones confidence. But good on you Suzie for taking it with a grain of salt and proving them wrong! Good luck with your weight loss journey too.

Thanks for all your support. I was majorly freaking out for a while there and thinking he was going to cancel my surgery. Suzie is right, I think he was just trying to scare me becasue he obviously thought I was cheating.

I am now 7 kilos down and 10 days away from surgery. I would love to lose another 3 kilos between now and then and get back to my starting weight- or even lower.

Gosh the Optifast has been tough this week. I have had to sit through a few dinners out with friends and colleaugues without eating and it is torturous. I know it will all be worth it in the end, but sometimes I just get so hungry I could eat my own arm. ;)

Hey Tully,

I put on weight between my initial consultation and making a booking for the surgery, so dont think you are alone there!!!

They will do the surgery, so dont stress. As Shaggs (god bless her!!) said, there are much bigger people having this done.

Tell your Dr to 'jam it'!! Obviously if you could control your eating/weight you would be in need of his services. You prob only have to see him/it 3 more times anyway.

Stick to the Optifast, but don't hate yourself too much if you cheat a little bit. Let's face it, the stuff is PUTRID!!!

Good luck with it all and keep us posted!!!

Megsyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Thanks everyone, I am feeling much better about the whole thing after all your kind words. At the time I just felt like a big fat failure and was humiliated. I am now down 8 kilos and counting, I can't wait for my surgery!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
