Recommended Posts

Hey! Banded 4/13/09. How soon am I permitted to do any exercise besides walking?

Any suggestions?

Thanks guys.

I was told to listen to my body. If you try something and it hurts, stop doing it. Be especially careful not to to do any heavy lifting or cause too much strain on the abdominal area for the first six weeks so that the port and tubing can heal in place properly.

I was cleared to go back to the gym at 2 weeks. But nothing that strained the abs until I felt ready. I waited about 2 months for that.

I was banded last week (5/7/09). I did a 35 minute work out on my elliptical on Saturday 5/9 and everything felt okay. Since then I have worked out 2 more times (increased the intensity each time) and have not had any pain or complications.

I really think it is up to the person. I know of a few people who were banded and did not do any activity for over a month. Start off slowly and see how you do.

My doctor said I could walk every day, but nothing more for the first 6 weeks after surgery. Now that I'm beyond that, he said to keep it light for the first month (no heavy work on my stomach/abs), but anything else was fine. I've been doing the couch to 5k running program, and yoga but I haven't added more than that yet.

I started significant exercise about 2 months post op - and insanely serious exercise about 3 months post op.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
