Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor What's up?

Recommended Posts

Can someone explain how some posts can get over 6,000 hits and others get zero? Is this subforum working? Did I write the wrong stuff in my post? Am I supposed to be more pro-active?

If I'm missing something or doing something wrong or NOT doing something will someone eventually let me know?

You're an angel! I'd love and appreciate your guidance.

If needed, I'd enjoy offering you encouragement!

I'm see the psych dr tomorrow. My surgeion thinks I am "mourning" my "best friend"...food. I wasn't sure if I should be insulted or relieved, I chose the latter. Unfortunately it makes sense. Can you believe it?!?!

Thanks, again!

Of course I'd appreciate your encouragement, who would turn it down! I've lost 40 pounds since Oct.08 but I think I am in need of 3rd fill as I keep losing and gaining the same 5 pounds. A nurse isn't able to follow her own sage advice. I do have several excerpts from a book titled Are You Hungry which I will E-mail you if you'd like. My e-mail is dkr53@aol.com.

Hi There,

I don't think you did anything wrong, because I've run into the same thing. I asked for a mentor/buddy and never got a response either. I post on other threads and get responses, so I don't know what the deal is. I'm an RN to, but I'm still not banded and need some emotional support.

Awwww...her need support?

Well her got it..lol That's why I posted here. I need a little xtra. I'd love to offer you some of that support. I'm pretty new and am learning a lot myself. But I'm getting a lot too. Have you made the final decision to get the band? Weighed the pros and cons? I see you have posted a WHOLE lot, so I'm sure you have learned a lot too. This forum has been my saving grace. Have an appointment with a psychologist next week to help me deal with what my surgeon calls my "mourning the loss of my best friend-food". At first I was insulted, then the clouds kinda opened up and honestly, I don't like what I am seeing. But I guess that goes with the territory, huh? Let's keep in touch ok?

Oh yes, I've definitely decided to get the band. My journey has been very long, over 2 years, but I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel. I have my surgeon, and am just waiting for the hospital where he practices to get their Center of Excellence certification that Medicare requires. He has done thousands of surgeries, but he moved to a different town. I have posted a lot, but I still need emotional support. I am looking for a local psychologist that specializes in weight loss to help me deal with the issues that caused me to gain so much weight to begin with. My surgeon is 300 miles away, so I definitely need to find someone local. Thanks so much for being willing to be a buddy. I think we all need 1.

I can't explain things for others but I know that I have been thinking about offering myself as a mentor/buddy (want to get to the 100lb down milestone first - not long to go!!) and I would find it very difficult to answer someone else's thread and say "how about me?" It feels too much like trying to sell yourself or being presumptuous to go "chasing" buddies to mentor. When the time comes, I shall put up a post that describes a bit about me and my approach to banded life and hope that my methods appeal to someone out there and they contact me.

Your post has made me reconsider this. Perhaps what I will do is make the "offer" post as described above and then find all the "want a mentor" posts that haven't received a response and post a link to my "offer". What do you think? Would that seem less like I was "soliciting" business? *feels awkward*

Fanny,

I don't think you should feel weird about offering to be mentor/buddy. There are lots of us out there who are just looking for emotional support when they get stressed. I think you would be a great mentor.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
