Band Out, Sleeve In! It's done.

Recommended Posts

I'll see you there! I am having surgery Wednesday so we should over lap and be able to see each other.

Elizabeth, it's nice to read you're enjoying your sleeve.

I talked to my friend on the phone yesterday that got her's in Sept. and she really loves it too. She is down 65 lbs. She knows she could have lost more but she likes to eat french fries.

Hello everyone,

I am excited, nervous and in a way, down right scared, but my sleeve is being done on Friday the 1st with Dr Aceves. I cant believe its really going to happen, I had to pay for a revision and it really tapped my resources but I really believe that I am worth it. Thank God for this site and for all of you. I am loving life because of you.

Ruthi

Congratulations, you'll do so well with a sleeve. It's easier than banding. You'll see!

Congrats to you!

Oh, FFs. I was at McDonald's today and Mini-Mac and Mr. Mac ordered french fries. I was thinking I'd have ONE. But I couldn't find one that looked right. So I didn't have any.

I think an alien has taken over my body?

That's funny Mac. I haven't really had ffs in over 2 years. I may have had one here or there, but I can't remember that I did. I don't eat out nearly as often as I did pre-band.

Congratulations to the soon to be sleeved ladies. You'll do great and I look forward to hearing your progress.

I can't imagine eating even a small bag of french fries. I go to a regular diet on May 2 but am still working on getting soft foods down. tuna (2.5 oz) mixed with 2 teaspoons of mayo is becoming a favorite. I get in some decent Protein and can nurse the portion slowly until I get to the end. I know that candy and chocolate and icecream go down real easy so I have not brought any of that stuff into the house. I seem to crave healthy foods... a trend I hope never ends. LOL.

I could have advanced to a regular diet, but have stayed with the soft foods longer, just getting used to the feeling of fullness. I still do a Protein Shake in the am, and have been eating a lot of tuna fish. I plan to advance to regular tommorrow. I think I'm ready. I had some chocolate which I was craving during my cycle, so I bought a hersheys with almonds which I used to love. The first bite was good, the second left a weird taste in my mouth, so I threw it away. Haven't really craved anything sweet since. For the first time in my life, I can go food shopping and not be hypnotized by the bakery or the candy section.

I, too, am craving healthy foods. :smile2:

I'm 11 months out from revision and I still crave healthy foods. On another board we were listing what is in our frig/cupboards. I had to laugh, the worst thing I have in there right now is 3/4 jar of Chocolate frosting. It's really time to throw it away, I'm sure it's not good anymore. Everything else is bags and bags of Beans, lentils, etc. Soups, a ton of produce and some yogurt. I don't even buy canned veggies anymore. Only fresh.

I honestly believe that the bad promotes unhealthy eating. When I ate fresh fruits, I had immediate heart burn. The symptoms govern what foods you eat and that's not healthy.

I'm enjoying the soft phase of the diet but am truly amazed at the fact that I don't ever feel hungry and that, when I do eat, just a small amount fills me. THIS is what I expected from the band and never got. It's also a pleasure not to have to worry about heart burn and acid reflux. It's all about choosing whatever healthy food I can have on the soft diet, enjoying it, and stopping when the full feeling hits.

I'm glad we have the option of going to the soft diet after 7 days because it won't be such a struggle to get the Protein in. I don't like creamed cereals so I'm sticking with the soy slender drink for Breakfast. When I was banded, ricotta cheese was a savior. Four ounces of the skim milk version gave me a good protein source for lunch and kept me satisfied.

I was making a Peanut Butter and jelly sandwich yesterday for a friend (no meat on Good Friday) and the peanut butter did not smell "right" to me. It was a brand new jar and my friend thought I was nuts because it tasted and smelled "normal" to him. I am finding this very strange but the only part that effects me is the coffee. I'm drinking tea to get fluids in but I'm not much of a fan and I LOVE coffee. It still smells awful. Sigh!

The post-op instructions say to stay on soft diet for as long as you need to and not to attempt solids until 30 days have passed. You're wise to listen to your body and do what feels right. Congratulations on making it to the one month point! You must be feeling great.

Hey there, can someone send me or point me to a link that has the post op diet instructions for Dr. A? Elizabeth, thanks for posting your experience. I have the band and will be getting the sleeve next month!

Hello All,

I was invited here by MacMadame, (thx again) i have a band placed in mx 3 yrs ago on my dime bc my ins would not approve band but would rny. recently diagnosed w/esophagitis, and gastritis i am living on ice cream to put out the fire while drinking iced maalox all day. when i was still eating real food i would wake up choking on burning undigested food hours after the meal. the band is coming out. i have to make a decision on what's next. the dr who did my endoscopy recommended the sleeve. many of you seem to really like your sleeve. ALSO, since my initial surgery took place in mx i'm not sure my ins - anthem bcbs of Louisville will cover a revision. does anyone have this ins or same situation? i've read pages of posts and haven't seen anyone sharing about this ins w/mx band and us dr doing the revision. thx for any and all comments/suggestions.

Having had a band in MX means nothing regarding insurance today. It's all a matter of if your insurance covers WLS, revisions, and sleeves.

The only thing that does matter is that some of the really bad doctors have pretty horrible reputations with US doctors and they won't take on their patients. But it's not because it's MX, it's because of the doctors that did their surgery. Same holds true for really bad US doctors, nobody wants to take over their cases either.

Have you found your insurance company's bariatric policy yet? It should list what their criteria is for revisions. Some policies are kind of buttheads about it -- won't pay if your weight is below 35 BMI, for example. But most of them will pay if the revision is medically necessary. With your band problems, you should easily qualify on that score.

Oh and I forgot to introduce everyone... Susan and Elizabeth are moderators here who just got their bands taken out and revised to a sleeve at the beginning of the month. OregonDaisy is a moderator who is getting revised to a sleeve next month. Wasa is a long-time LBT member who was revised months ago... it's coming up on a year for you, isn't it, Wasa?

I never had a band. I went right to a sleeve and mostly because of Susan's experience with slippage. For some reason her story really brought me up short and made me realize that even rule followers have trouble with the band. Then I started looking for an alternative and found the sleeve.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
