Started my pre-op diet and Im so hungry...

Recommended Posts

:ohmy:OMG! I am having surgery in one week, and I have not been good at all about my pre-op diet! My doctor wanted me to do the standard slim-fast diet with one sensible meal a day, but he didn't say anything about not doing the surgery if my liver was fatty! Actually, he knows that my 20 year anniversery is the day before, and when I asked about going out to dinner, he told me to "have a steak for him!" I guess I better start taking this part more seriously! :mad2:

How do you feel? I also had surgery on the 9th. OMG, I kept thinking what the heck did I do to myself. The day after surgery, the 10th, was the absolute worst. Today is a bit better. Let me know your experience.

OMG, I am starving! I have been on my pre-op diet for three days and just thinking about eating Jello or gagging down one of those Protein shakes makes me want to hurl:) I really don't mind protien shakes but having it as my only source of food has really made me dislike them.

I go in for surgery on the 16th, so I have for days left. I know this is all for a great cause, but I wish my doctor would have allowed me atleast a peice of chicken:)

I'm stickin' with it and pulling myself through. I know it will be worth it.

I can relate. Been there, but I wasn't able to have the Protein Shakes. I would have killed for one of those. I mix my Protein Powder in a carnation Breakfast. It isn't bad. Stay tough. It doesn't last forever, and keep looking to the end results. I have been in a lot of pain the day after surgery, but today is better. Keep the pain under control. Vicodine was too much for me so they gave Tramadol. Move around and keep the stiffness away. You will do fine. If you start to feel like giving up, use this site. There are a lot of great people here.

Hi all,

Boy, do I feel priveleged in that my surgeon does not recommend pre-op dieting because he says we need to be in good shape nutritionally to support good healing after the surgery, and that if we fast and don't eat well beforehand, we're more tired and it's harder to heal. So he frowns on pre-op dieting. I'm happy about that! I wish you all the best with your dieting and after the band. I just finished my third visit with the nutritionist and lost 10 pounds in 2 months just by adding veggies and cutting sweets from my diet. Nice! Now I'm "only" 39.9 BMI and they're concerned the insurance won't approve me. Unreal. I guess we'll see what happens.

I sure wish I hadn't had to pre-op diet. I would agree with your surgeon. I would have felt better getting to eat. Good luck. Hollar if you need anything.

I don't know in that area, but I bet if you phoned my surgeons office, they maybe able to give you a referral. 303-861-1790-Dr.Brown. Amy is the office manager.

Whatever you do make sure they are ASMBS- A center of excellence certified. I researched Dr.Brown with the AMA and found he had a good record. This web site might be able to help you in your area if you find someone in your area who has had it done. Be selective. Good luck!!!!

Reading all of these post makes me anxious. I went to the seminar, had 6 months of doctor visits and I went for my psych evaluation today. I want to do this, but I'm afraid of this new way of living and I hope I'm up to it. I've had friends that had the lap band and two were very successful and one was not. I want to be active and limber again, I want to be able to take long hikes on steep trails, so I know I want to do this. Am I just being a big chicken? The idea of not eating anything but liquids for two weeks before surgery sounds scary.

I started my pre op diet 5 days early. I need to lose 13 pounds by my surgery date on March 25th. I did not have to start it until this past Tuesday but I was excited plus I wanted to make sure I lost the 13 pounds. My diet is a protien shake in the morning and one at lunch. I can have a low calorie frozen meal at night. I can have salad with a low calorie spray dressing. Apparently I found out that I can have loads of veggies. I had been getting dinners that were 220 calories or lower. Turns out I can have up to 300 calories. I have lost 10 pounds so far and still have just a day under 2 weeks to go. I spoke with my Dr.s office and they said once I lost the 3 pounds I can substitute one of the shakes for a 6 inch subway sandwhich. I probably won't do that. I am afraid of messing up. I have given up carbonated drinks too. Been drinking Crystal Lite and tea with Splenda. I have been hungry some days and not on others. I can't wait to get my band.

I'm on day 4 and it is HARD whoever thinks this is the easy way to weight loss should try it because it's not, i had a little encouragement yesterday I stepped on the scale (fully clothed mind you) and already lost 11 lbs but who knows where those came from lol i'm trying to get all my fluids in and Protein FIRST as the golden rule but the Protein Shakes are getting harder and harder to put down as they become my only food source gotta keep mixing it up! don't get stuck in a rut! those are just some of the things I keep telling myself good luck girls I'm starving along with you!!!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
