February 12th was my day! I just wanted to introduce myself

Recommended Posts

Hello - I was banded on February 12 in Royal Oak Michigan. Dr. Krause did my surgery. I am very happy with the recovery so far. The surgery day was a blur. I had to report at 6:00 a.m. for a 7:30 surgery. I got my gown on and had blood drawn, peed in a cup, got weighed, and had my IV put in. The pre-op rooms had flat screen tv's so it was nice to be able to watch tv to keep my mind off what was about to happen. Pretty soon the happy drug came through my iv and I was being wheeled off to surgery. I recall getting myself moved over to the operating table and being told the infamous "take deep breaths...this is only oxygen". After that I was out. I woke up in recovery and was there probably an hour before being taken to my room. My surgeon requires an overnight stay which I was grateful for. My biggest complaint when I woke up was the dry mouth I had. I was not allowed any Water or ice chips until later so I could not even clear my throat from the breathing tube. I sounded very rough but did not feel bad. They kept the pain under control very well.

Once I was in my room they gave me a couple of hours before they came in and wanted me to get up and walk around. I was able to get up on my own and walk around. I was a bit woozy but ok. My mom walked the halls with me. I had a catheter during surgery but never knew it. I did not have to urinate until later in the day. They kept wanting me to go and I didn't have to. Getting up was a bit painful due to the stomach muscles used in this process but not unbearable. I got pain meds whenever I needed them so don't be afraid to ask...especially while you are in the hospital. I did not sleep well at the hospital. The next day I was taken down for a barium swallow test where I had to stand in front of an x-ray machine and swallow some liquid that was very bitter. My surgeon happened to be down there and looked at the results. Everything looked good and I was sent back upstairs to begin eating Clear Liquids. My first meal was strained cream of chicken Soup with fat free milk powder (for added protein). I thought this was a bit much for my first meal but since that is what they ordered I ate it. My face got all flushed and I had a full feeling. It was odd. It passed ok though and I was allowed to go home.

The overall experience was great. I am now 5 days out and feeling pretty good. Still sore but doing better. I opted to take a full week off of work and think that will be fine. I am more tired and had an episode this morning where I got light headed from going too long without eating. I went to bed around 9 and got up, did some work, took a shower. By this time it was 9:00 a.m. It seems like I am having to eat or drink "something" all the time. It is hard to get everything in that I am supposed to.

I know this is a lengthy introduction but I wanted to include the things that I wanted to know beforehand.

I welcome conversations with anyone!:thumbup::thumbup:

I had my surgery exactly one month before you in Madison Heights at St. John Oakland. Glad to hear everything went fine, mine was as uneventful, just as I was hoping for! I am down 22 pounds so far, including the week of pre-op diet. One thing that was helpful, was that each day was better that the previous, so hang in there!!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
