No more favorite foods?

Recommended Posts

Hello Bandsters,

Is it true that one must give up certain favorite foods for life? If true, that part is difficult to accept. For example, I love steak and cheece subs from subway. When if ever could I have one after having the operation?

Hmmmm, well that's one thing that probably WILL be difficult to eat after surgery.

But you might find a window where you can eat things like that before you get proper restriction and I bet you'll find its hard and its not quite as good as it once was and then your love affair will die a natural death, lol. it is never as hard to give up those foods, you just dont want them anymore.

I've not really had a burger or fries since surgery 3 and a half years ago. I kind of instinctively know what it will feel like - I've had tastes, not good, lol, it doesnt go down well. Even the thought of eating at Mcdonalds makes me feel sick.

Well I have not given up eating a variety of different foods. I love my veggies, not sure why, because I did not love them as a kid. And I eat bread, fruits, meats, and carbs. Shocking but true!

I just eat so much less of everything. If I am having a treat, I eat a small portion of it and I don't eat it every day, but I do have treats.

I have found with my band, I have great restriction right now, and I am able to consume any type of food. But I eat small portions.

However, there are people who cannot eat certain food types because they get stuck. You really will not know what you can and cannot eat until after surgery when you are on solids.

You doctor might have specific instructions for you too!

Good luck!

No you don't have to give up all your beloved foods. It is individual and depends partly (largely) on how restricted you are. Many people can eat bread if they want. You MAY find that the time it takes to chew it and swallow it are not worth the effort, but again, it is individual. Per my doc, goal is to be able to eat anything but in smaller amounts. You'll still be in control. Many (not all, but many) who can't eat a little of anything have chosen to be filled more tightly.

We're all a little different inside (our digestive tracts aren't cranked out by robots) so there is no hard and fast rule. Odds are high you will have some problem food, odds are high you won't care too much if you are losing and feeling great.

For example I LOVE Patty Melts from Whataburger. I got one the other day, planning to eat half (knew I couldn't eat the whole one) and after about 4 bites I decided heck with it and ate something else. It didn't taste good enough any more to be worth the effort.

I still eat subway (turkey and ham on wheat toasted) except now I can eat only half of a 6 inch, where before the band I could eat a whole foot long and do it really fast.If Jared Fogle can lose that much weight on subways then it must be ok.My surgeon thinks he slipped in a little surgery that he is not telling about.

It all depends on the person. Some people can't touch bread and rice. It will depend on you and your band. my band has a mind of it's own. Some days I can get away with eating a subway sub and other days it would make me sick as a dog. Either way I still eat less than I ever did! Rice is not my friend!

Post-op, before you are properly restricted, you will probably be able to eat your Subway without issue. Depending on how restricted you choose to be, you may or may not choose to continue to eat them as you continue on your journey. I prefer a tighter band. Therefore, bread is NOT my friend. But that is OK to me and I don't miss the Subway. I would miss my size 6 jeans far more. If I want Subway, I can get a sub made as a salad for the taste. But it would go to waste cause I don't eat much. I prefer the $2 Sammies from Quizno's. I eat the insides and one bite of the pita and am perfectly satisfied.

Like the others said, it probably depends on the person as far as the physical limitations of the band go. Emotionally, I feel like I don't want to eat just anything. I will be banded next month, and I feel like I don't want to put bad things in my body. I don't think that the healthier choices taste as good as the fattening foods, but this is just something I have to accept. I really had a hard time coming to that realization, but a friend of mine put it this way. "You won't do drugs, no matter how good they might feel because you know they will hurt you. Eating like this is also hurting you." I hated her for about two weeks, but she's right. She's right. Eating to please myself is what got me in trouble in the first place. I had lied to myself about the portion sizes because I felt like, and still feel like, the actual types of food I eat are healthy. No fried foods, no super sized anything, no real mayo, etc. It's just that, for me, I can eat several pieces of whole wheat bread, drink 30 oz of low-fat milk....I am hoping that the band will help me reign it in some as far as that goes.

the only thing I have had to give up that I like is carbonation --- and I have gotten used to it --- I have also gotten used to not drinking during eating --- I can eat anything just lots less --- chew chew chew -- I have not had a sub yet but I would eat some of the bread ---- chew chew chew

I am only 2 months post band and am amazed at what a difference it has made in my food preferences. I am more easily satisfied. There is nothing I crave that I can't have. Some things are just no longer worth it, since I know they won't be easy to eat, but I generally don't miss them. I eat about 75% of my meals out, and almost never have a hard time finding something I want to, and can, eat.

I agree with everybody. There are some foods that I cannot eat, because it hurts and they don't go down well, if at all. After trying these foods a few times with the same awful ending - it kind of makes your cravings for them go away. I know if I eat white bread or plain chicken what will happen, and that right there makes me not crave them anymore. There are plenty of foods that I like that I can still eat. The good part is, I eat less of them, and now there is less of me. Good luck to you!! Becky

I haven't found any restrictions yet but I have only been one week on solid foods. I have yet to PB or slime...(knock on wood). I do find that the fast food that I used to love doesn't taste very good now. I don't know if its because I am eating it slower and am actually tasting it...but I can tell you that the McDonald's cheeseburger is one nasty son of a gun.

I am glad this was posted, I have been worried about what I could and couldn't eat. I love bread and potatoes. The point I am getting from most of these posts is that it is an individual experience.

I am going on my 8 month of being banded. I have not had any problems with food choices (I can eat anything only smaller portions). I have 4 friends that have had problems with anything from chicken, rice, popcorn, cheese, etc. My surgeon says that I am an exception to the rule, ususally people find something that they can not tollerate. My motto is chew chew chew, keep all pieces of food smaller than a single dice, and remember to taste the food you are eating. I hope everyone has as much luck as I have had.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
