Serious second thoughts

Recommended Posts

OK, First let me say that it has taken me over 2 years to get to this point. After battling with insurance companies, and other health complications I have all the prerequisites taken care of and I have an appointment to set the date for my surgery on Thursday and I am having second thoughts.

I have had such an easy time sticking with the 800 to 1000 cal diet for the last several months and have lost a lot of weight.(but I have lost weight before) Should I just stick with the diet and not have the band. but then i am afraid that I will just end up gaining all the weight back. But there is a chance I will do that even with the band and what am I about to put my family through not to mention the cost. Even with insurance it still a big chunk of change. I know these are the rambling of an insane lunatic but I am like coming unglued.

I guess what I need is reassurance that I made the correct decision.

FYI I am super-obese. 70+bmi and i am terified that if i dont get this weight off it will kill me.

Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

You are correct, it probably will kill you.

Congratulations on losing the weight so far. That is commendable and not an easy task. No one can decide is this is right for you or not. Only you can do that. What I can tell you is that I am eating more than you right now, losing weight and don't feel hungry all the time. I also had insurance but it still cost me over $2700. It was the best $2700 I have ever spent and my children and my husband agree. I am taking off the weight relatively slowly. As of this morning I have lost 70 lbs.

What the band does for me is keeps me satisfied on less food and the comfort in knowing that I probably won't gain it back. This is the least I have weighed in over 10 years. I feel much better. No more GERD, sleep apnea, swelling feet or hands, or hurt knees. I know that I made the right decision for myself and my family. That did NOT, however, keep me from being terrified for the two weeks prior to my surgery.

From the moment I had my surgery date set I imagined everything that could go wrong. It didn't, everything came out perfect and I am thankful I didn't give into my fears.

Good luck to you and know that whatever decision you make, it should be YOUR decision and no one else's.

I can empathize with you. I had serious, I mean serious second thoughts before my surgery this past week. I was terrified of surgery, having never had one before, and very concerned (still am to an extent) of a device being inside me and all the risks of slippage, etc. I was feeling disgust with myself that I had to do something as extreme as weight loss surgery because of my love/hate affair with food. I cried on my hubbie's shoulder and he stood tall and kept encouraging me to do it. I am still shocked I went through with it and have been feeling stronger each day. I guess what helped is that my sis's 70 year old mother in law had it done the day before me so if she was comfortable with the surgery risk at her age then I would be too.

Now I am on the 'other side' and still a newbie. Graduating to pureed stage today, already lost some weight. My BMI was 63 going into surgery so I am not too far off from you. I can tell you that for the last 2 years my weight had taken over my life making me a recluse, not wanting to travel to work conferences, go on vacation, nothing. All I saw when I looked in the mirror was this fat suit that I just wanted to unzip but I was so powerless. I realized my food addiction this year and hope that with the help of the restriction (the band) and the FA 12 steps (no flour/sugar) I am going to beat this! In my mind I am trying to program myself into thinking I had the bypass so that also makes me stay away from sugar.

I chose band over bypass because I am 37 and we would like to start a family soon...I don't want to wait 2 years as they suggest with the bypass.

You have to decide what is right for you regarding this surgery. My only advice is if you are having second thoughts because of the procedure itself, do not. NO ONE was a bigger chicken than me, I cried all the way into the OR I was so scared and here I am back at home. It was a leap of faith!

Good luck whatever you decide!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
