I have the AP L band. I honestly can't imagine why it would be any less likely (or more likely) to be successful than the band that preceeded it. It just makes healing easier, actually, because the surgeon can place the band that most easily FITS the area. Before, I'd have had a smaller band, and had more issues with restriction etc post op (and more potential to develop slipping and/or erosion) The two sizes just give the surgeon options to fit the right band to the right upper stomach.

Hi. I've got the APS (small - 10cc's). My surgery was on September 19th, 2008. I have had success with my band, but know lots of others who have had success with other bands. I think that the kind/type/size/brand of band you have is not nearly as important as how committed you are to changing your lifestyle and eating habits. If your doctor uses the AP, it makes sense that he likes it and thinks it is the best. I love my band and wish you lots of luck!!! Becky

Hello,

I am three days out from getting banded with the AP band. My surgeon referred to it as the 'standard' band being used now. I never gave any thought to particular brands of bands, just went with what the bariatric center uses.

So far, so good!

I am so not a doctor! BUT from my nosing around on the internet and quizzing my doc, AP stands for "Advanced Platform" and the S is smaller (holds 10 ccs) and the L is larger (holds 14ccs) Of course, "small" and "large" are relative; 4 cc's is less than a teaspoon, so they aren't THAT much different. Perhaps surgeons refer to the S (for small) as standard....or perhaps the info I read was dated? Either way I know mine is AP L, it (along with the AP S) is the newest Lap band, and it holds 14 cc's

Yes I remembered it wrong! The AP S IS Standard and it holds 10ccs. Here's an interesting comparison:

Compare Adjustable Gastric Bands - LAP-BAND vs. REALIZE Band

Thanks to you all for your input.

I only meant for this to be a light-hearted thread and an excuse to hear some success stories!

I am only a week out of surgery and bored, so please forgive any nonsense I write

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
