I am having my first fill on Thursday! I definitely need it! Over the past week I have been able to eat A LOT more than before then. What can I expect with the first fill????

If you are talking about the actual fill - my surgeon numbs the area and then does a blind fill - he said he can feel the port and knows he has hit it by the feel when the needle goes in. I have to drink some Water to make sure it goes down and then I can leave. After my first fill I had 4 cc in my 10cc band and felt restriction - but only for a couple of days. After that I didn't feel any restriction. Now I have 6 cc and I definitely feel restriction.

  • My first fill was completely painless. The PA at my surgeon's office does them without a numbing agent. My recommendation is DO NOT LOOK AT THE NEEDLE! I made that mistake at my second fill. It didn't hurt, but I was feeling anxious. If the person doing the fill can numb the area first, you may want to request it.
  • If felt "weird" when she was putting the saline in. I don't have any other word to describe it.
  • You should be asked to drink Water after it is filled. If the water doesn't go down relatively easy, TELL THEM. Don't leave if your band is too tight. That is asking for trouble.
  • They may require you to be on liquids after, mine doesn't, but most do.

Good Luck, and don't worry. It should be easy.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
